Nonprofit channels follow YouTube’s ordinary live-streaming eligibility rules. A channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. The extra 50-subscriber threshold applies to live streaming from YouTube’s mobile app—not as a general requirement for every way of going live. Joining the YouTube Nonprofit Program does not replace these requirements.
Eligibility depends on how you plan to stream
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance does not list a separate eligibility exemption or subscriber threshold for nonprofit channels. The rules differ by method: mobile streaming has additional requirements, while YouTube also lists webcam, encoder, and console streaming as options under its general guidance.
| Method | Requirements | What it means for a nonprofit |
|---|---|---|
| General live streaming | Channel verification; no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days; streamer must be at least 16. | Nonprofit status is not listed as a substitute for these requirements or as a separate eligibility category. |
| YouTube mobile app | General requirements, at least 50 subscribers, and a supported phone or tablet. YouTube says first activation may take up to 24 hours. | A channel below 50 subscribers should consider webcam, encoder, or console streaming if it meets the general requirements. |
| Webcam, encoder, or console | These are listed by YouTube as live-streaming methods under its general eligibility guidance. | Do not assume the mobile app’s 50-subscriber floor applies to these methods; check the channel’s own YouTube Studio status. |
YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.”
Does a nonprofit need 50 subscribers to livestream?
Only if it wants to stream using the YouTube mobile app. The 50-subscriber minimum is a mobile-app requirement, not a general rule for every live-streaming method. A nonprofit channel that meets the general eligibility rules can consider a webcam, encoder, or console instead.

For mobile streaming, YouTube may limit the number of viewers for channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, and may set the stream archive to private by default. If the channel falls below 50 subscribers, it loses mobile live-streaming access. These audience and archive limits are distinct from the basic requirement to qualify for mobile streaming.
Does the channel need to join the YouTube Nonprofit Program?
No. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance does not make enrollment in the YouTube Nonprofit Program a condition of live access. A channel still has to satisfy the ordinary rules for its chosen streaming method.
The Nonprofit Program is a separate program activated through Google for Nonprofits. It offers nonprofit-oriented features, including Link Anywhere cards for external campaign pages and dedicated technical support. To request activation, an organization needs a Google for Nonprofits account and a YouTube channel whose connection to the organization can be verified. Google says activation requests are reviewed within 2–14 business days.

Eligibility for Google for Nonprofits is also separate from eligibility to livestream. Google’s guidance says organizations must be registered charitable organizations in supported countries and verified. Government entities, hospitals or healthcare organizations, and schools, academic institutions, and universities are generally excluded, with exceptions for certain affiliated charitable arms. These conditions concern access to Google for Nonprofits, not the basic YouTube live-streaming rules.
Can the nonprofit add a donate button to its livestream?
Not automatically. Being able to broadcast does not mean a channel or nonprofit can use YouTube Giving. YouTube Giving has its own eligibility rules for both the creator channel and the charity receiving donations.
Creator-channel requirements
YouTube’s listed requirements for a creator channel include being located in a supported region, having at least 10,000 subscribers, being in the YouTube Partner Program, and not being designated as made for kids. Availability depends on location, so check YouTube’s current eligibility information for the channel’s region.

- Confirm channel verification. YouTube’s general guidance requires a verified channel.
- Check restrictions from the prior 90 days. A live-streaming restriction can block access even when other channel features remain available.
- Confirm the streamer is at least 16. YouTube’s general minimum age requirement applies regardless of nonprofit status.
- Check whether live streaming has been enabled. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours, particularly for mobile streaming.
- Check the method-specific requirements. For the mobile app, confirm at least 50 subscribers and a supported phone or tablet. If the channel has fewer, use another listed method if otherwise eligible.
- Review the channel’s own YouTube Studio status. General help pages cannot determine whether a specific channel has an active restriction or whether a feature is available to it.
Restrictions, alternate channels, and minors
A channel restricted from live streaming cannot evade that restriction by broadcasting from another channel. YouTube says this violates its circumvention rules and can lead to account termination.
If a live stream on an adult-owned account includes someone under 16, YouTube says the adult must be visibly present. YouTube also warns that streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled or access to chat and other features restricted.
Keeping an eligible stream online
Eligibility answers whether a channel can go live; it does not guarantee that a broadcast will remain connected. If your channel is eligible and your goal is to keep uploaded video playing continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not bypass YouTube’s channel eligibility rules, and it streams to YouTube only.
