How to Stop Buffering When Live Streaming: Fix It as a Broadcaster or Viewer

Buffering can start with the broadcaster’s upload or encoder—or with the viewer’s network, device, or playback settings. Use these tests to narrow it down.

First identify where buffering starts: if you are broadcasting, check OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection indicator; if you are watching, test another stream, playback quality, device, or network. The cause may be the broadcaster’s upload or encoder, delivery between the platform and viewer, the viewer’s home network or ISP, or the playback device—so a viewer’s buffering alone does not prove the stream itself is broken.

Identify which side is buffering

Broadcasters and viewers need different fixes. OBS reports connection health from the broadcaster’s side; playback quality and comparisons with other streams help a viewer test their side. Twitch’s troubleshooting guidance recognizes that problems can occur at several points between broadcaster and viewer, including encoding, network delivery, the home network, and the device.

  • You are broadcasting: Check OBS while the problem is happening. Rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the set bitrate.
  • You are watching: Try Auto quality, another stream, and—if possible—another device or network. These comparisons help narrow the cause but do not prove it.

OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That means dropped frames can be a protective response to a weak connection, not evidence that OBS itself is causing the viewer’s buffering. OBS connection guidance

If you are broadcasting: stabilize the stream connection

1. Check OBS’s connection status during the problem

Watch the dropped-frame count and connection indicator while streaming. If the count rises and the indicator turns yellow or red, investigate the network path to the streaming service and whether the configured bitrate is too high for your stable upload capacity. If the connection indicator remains healthy, look at encoding or rendering performance instead of changing network settings first.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity

Use upload performance—not advertised download speed—as the comparison. Twitch’s general rule of thumb is that upload speed should equal the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. For example, Twitch gives 6 Mbps of stream bitrate and at least 8 Mbps of upload speed as an example. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee: a speed test cannot ensure that the connection will remain stable throughout a stream, and other devices using upload bandwidth reduce what is available.

Run a speed test and compare its upload result with the stream bitrate, but also check for competing uploads on your network. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and running a representative stream test before an event. YouTube encoder setup and stream-health guidance

3. Reduce settings only as far as needed

If the connection cannot reliably sustain the current bitrate, lower the video bitrate. If that is not enough, lower resolution or frame rate to bring the stream within both the available connection and the destination platform’s current recommendations. The appropriate balance depends on internet stability, computer hardware, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate; do not assume one setting suits every stream.

Check the destination platform’s current encoder recommendations before choosing exact values. They can change, and the guidance cited here does not establish a universal bitrate, keyframe interval, or resolution for every service and setup.

4. Test Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi

If the broadcasting computer is on Wi-Fi, try a direct Ethernet connection and compare the stream-health indicators. A cable is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed cure: if buffering continues, check upload capacity, router performance, and the ISP connection. Restarting the router or contacting the ISP may help when upload performance is inadequate.

5. Test before the event and inspect encoder performance

Run a test stream with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube recommends checking stream-health messages before and during the event. If OBS’s connection is healthy but encoding or rendering performance is poor, use OBS’s encoding-performance guidance and reduce system or encoder load as appropriate. If you are watching: test playback, device, and network

1. Choose Auto quality

Where available, switch playback quality to Auto, especially if your connection varies. Twitch says Auto adapts quality to current network conditions; manually forcing a quality your connection cannot sustain can make playback worse.

2. Compare with another live stream

Try a different channel. If only one stream buffers, broadcaster upload or encoder settings may be involved. If several streams or services buffer, investigate the viewer’s device, home network, ISP, or service delivery. This is a useful comparison, not conclusive proof of the cause.

3. Try another device or connection

Check the same stream on another device or network if available. If playback works elsewhere, focus on the original device or connection. On mobile, check whether the carrier limits video streaming; YouTube recommends using Wi-Fi when mobile-network playback is problematic.

4. Treat speed recommendations as service-specific

YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. Twitch’s official viewer guidance recommends download speeds of 7–12 Mbps for 1080p60, 3–6 Mbps for 720p60, 1.1–3 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7–1.5 Mbps for 360p. These are platform recommendations for viewing, not universal thresholds or guarantees against buffering. Twitch broadcasting and viewing guidance

Match the symptom to the next test

OBS dropped frames rise and connection indicator is yellow or red Compare bitrate with stable upload; check competing upload use and test Ethernet if on Wi-Fi. An unstable or insufficient connection to the streaming service.
OBS connection appears healthy, but the stream still performs poorly Inspect encoding and rendering performance; run a representative test. System or encoder load may be involved.
One channel buffers, but other streams play normally Compare another channel or device. The broadcaster’s upload or encoder may be involved, though this is not proof.
Several streams or services buffer on one device or network Try another device or network; check upload/download performance and mobile restrictions. A local network, device, ISP, or service-delivery issue may be involved.
