A jump cut removes a section from a continuous shot so the subject appears to leap forward in time. To make one in Premiere, cut before and after the footage you want to remove, ripple-delete that section to close the gap, then play the result and decide whether the visible jump suits the video.
What a jump cut does
A jump cut is an edit within one sequential shot that makes the action appear to skip ahead. Because the camera angle stays essentially the same, the subject may seem to change position or posture abruptly. That visible discontinuity can be a deliberate way to compress time or draw attention to the edit; it can also feel jarring if the surrounding sequence is meant to look continuous.
Adobe describes jump cuts as a departure from continuity-editing conventions and notes their widespread use in online video. Its discussion of a 30-degree change concerns continuity convention, not a universal technical rule. Whether to keep a jump cut is an editorial choice: review it in context rather than treating every visible jump as a mistake.
Make a jump cut in Premiere
- Put the footage in the timeline. Find the continuous shot and locate the pause, mistake, or other moment you want to remove.
- Enable snapping and protect audio if needed. Snapping can help align edits with timeline points. If the audio should remain synchronized with the video, lock or otherwise protect the relevant audio before cutting.
- Cut on both sides of the unwanted moment. Position the playhead where the removal should begin and make a cut, then move to where the action should resume and make a second cut. Adobe’s Premiere shortcuts list Command+K on Mac or Control+K on PC to split at the playhead; C selects the Razor tool. Shortcuts can vary with the installed version and keyboard configuration, so confirm them in your setup.
- Remove the section with ripple deletion. Select the isolated portion and ripple-delete it so the remaining footage closes the gap. Adobe lists Alt/Option+Delete for ripple deletion; verify the shortcut in your Premiere version.
- Refine the edit. Zoom in on the timeline and adjust the cut points if necessary. Check that the retained action begins and ends where you intend, and that audio has not shifted out of sync. Adobe also lists Shift+Command/Control+K for cutting audio tracks as well, so take care not to include audio tracks unintentionally.
- Play the sequence in context. Watch the edit rather than judging only the timeline. Decide whether the leap feels purposeful and fits the tone of the surrounding video.
Adobe’s basic editing help covers cutting and repositioning clips in the timeline. Its separate guide to J- and L-cuts describes carrying audio across a picture change. These are distinct techniques: a jump cut removes time within a shot, while a J- or L-cut changes how audio and picture overlap across a transition.

Keep the jump visible or cover it?
If you want time to feel compressed or the edit to register, retain the jump. If you want to remove a pause or mistake without an obvious visual discontinuity, Adobe suggests cutting to B-roll or another scene, then returning when the main action resumes. The choice depends on the effect you want, not on a rule that every jump must be hidden.
Cross-cutting is different again: it alternates between simultaneous actions, such as two events unfolding at once, and can build tension. It is not simply another name for removing a section from one shot.
