To run birdsong continuously with FFmpeg on Ubuntu, you need a continuous audio source, an FFmpeg process to send it, and a separately configured streaming endpoint such as Icecast. You also need process supervision for exits or reboots: FFmpeg’s reconnect options alone do not make the whole service self-healing. The exact audio format and recording rights must be checked for your server, audience, and source.
How the setup fits together
FFmpeg reads media inputs—including files, pipes, network streams, and capture devices—and writes to a destination URL. It processes media; it is not automatically a complete public radio service. For a public or multi-listener broadcast, a practical arrangement is an audio source feeding FFmpeg, which publishes to a separately operated streaming server such as Icecast. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and its protocol documentation.
- Source: A recording, a sequence of recordings, or a live capture device. Decide how playback should continue when a file ends.
- Publisher: FFmpeg reads the source and sends audio to the configured endpoint.
- Listener endpoint: A streaming server accepts the published stream and serves it to listeners.
- Supervisor: Ubuntu service management or another process supervisor starts FFmpeg after a host reboot and can restart it if it exits.
These are separate responsibilities. A looping source does not restart a crashed process, and a process restart does not guarantee that the source, destination, or listener connection is healthy.
Choose and verify the audio source
Start with the actual input rather than a generic command. FFmpeg supports regular files and capture devices, among other input types, but the relevant input syntax depends on what you are using and how the installed build was compiled. Run ffmpeg -version and check the locally installed FFmpeg documentation before relying on an option or input device.

For a recording, determine what should happen at the end: stop, restart the same file, or move through a playlist. A 24/7 stream needs content available continuously in the intended order. The material retrieved for this setup does not establish a complete, tested birdsong-loop command or playlist recipe, so verify the method against your FFmpeg build and test that it behaves as intended before relying on it.

icecast://[username[:password]@]server:port/mountpoint
Use the server’s actual hostname, port, credentials, and mountpoint; the syntax above is a pattern, not a working account or endpoint. FFmpeg’s Icecast output supports stream metadata such as name, genre, description, and URL, along with a public/private setting, mountpoint password, TLS, and a content-type override for content types other than audio/mpeg. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the instructions for the Icecast server you operate.

- Keep credentials out of public examples and logs where possible. Avoid putting a real password in a command that could be exposed through shell history or process listings.
- Confirm the server’s accepted audio formats and authentication requirements before choosing output settings.
- Test the mountpoint with a listener client before announcing the stream. A successful FFmpeg connection alone does not prove that listeners can play it.
Choose audio settings by compatibility, not guesswork
There is no established universal best codec, bitrate, channel count, or sample rate for this setup. Those values depend on the endpoint and the listeners’ playback support. Check the server’s requirements and test the resulting stream in representative players. Do not assume a setting is optimal merely because FFmpeg accepts it.
Whether to encode or pass through the input depends on the source format and what the destination accepts. Validate the complete path—from source through FFmpeg and the server to a listener—before treating the configuration as ready for continuous use.

Keep the stream running continuously
Keep audio available
Configure the source or playlist so playback continues in the way you intend. Then test what happens at file boundaries, when a file is missing, and when the input ends. An option that retries a network connection cannot supply more birdsong after a finite recording reaches its end.
Supervise FFmpeg separately
Use an Ubuntu process supervisor, such as a systemd service, appropriate to your installed Ubuntu and FFmpeg versions. The service needs to start the correct command in the right environment and recover from process exit or host reboot. The available documentation does not establish a complete, tested systemd unit for this birdsong setup; verify service syntax and behavior on your installation rather than copying an unverified unit.

Understand HTTP reconnect options
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnects for network or HTTP errors, and reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable inputs. The documentation describes reconnect_at_eof as treating end-of-file as an error, which can be useful for live or endless streams. These are HTTP protocol behaviors, not a general guarantee that Icecast output, a playlist, a local file, or the complete Ubuntu service will recover without interruption. Check ffmpeg -version and your locally installed documentation for option availability and applicability.
Why not use FFmpeg as the public listener server?
FFmpeg documents an experimental HTTP server mode, but its command-line tool does not implement multi-client mode. The documentation warns: “This is not yet implemented in ffmpeg.c and thus must not be used as a command line option.” For a public stream with multiple listeners, use an appropriate separately configured streaming server rather than treating FFmpeg’s experimental HTTP mode as the complete server stack. Compare the roles carefully: the listener-facing server must support the intended audience, format, authentication, and TLS needs; FFmpeg handles the media input and output. Neither choice removes the need to supervise the publishing process.
Check recording rights before broadcasting
Do not assume a birdsong recording is cleared for rebroadcast because it is easy to download, sounds natural, or is described as field audio. Confirm the applicable license and permission for the specific recording and intended public stream, including any attribution or commercial-use conditions. The available sources do not establish that any particular recording is safe to rebroadcast.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- FFmpeg exits when the recording ends: The input has reached EOF. Check whether your source or playlist is configured to continue; an HTTP reconnect option is not a substitute for looping finite local audio.
- FFmpeg cannot connect to Icecast: Verify the server address, port, credentials, mountpoint, and any TLS requirements against the server configuration. Do not infer that the example URL pattern is your endpoint.
- The server accepts the stream but listeners cannot play it: Check the output format and content type against the server and client requirements, then test with representative listener software.
- The stream stops after a network interruption: Determine whether the failure is in the input, FFmpeg output, Icecast server, or listener path. HTTP reconnect options apply to documented HTTP protocol behavior and do not guarantee recovery for every part of this chain.
- The stream does not return after a reboot: Check that the process supervisor is enabled, starts the intended command, and has access to the source and required credentials. Test a reboot or controlled service restart before depending on it.
