For a 24/7 YouTube stream in India, the clearest options are music you created yourself or tracks from YouTube’s Audio Library used under their applicable terms. For someone else’s bhajan, kirtan, or other devotional recording, get written permission that expressly covers India, continuous YouTube livestreaming, monetization if applicable, and any replay or later hosting. A devotional subject, a credit line, or a “free” label does not by itself establish those rights.
What makes devotional music safe to stream?
YouTube Help describes safe music as music “that is in the public domain or music that you have received permission to use from the copyright owner.” That is a rights question, not a judgment about a song’s religious or cultural character. A bhajan can be devotional and still have protected lyrics, a modern composition or arrangement, and a separately protected recording.

For a 24/7 channel, permission needs to match what the channel actually does. A license for an ordinary uploaded video, a short clip, or an in-person event may not cover continuous live transmission, looping, monetization, or an archived replay. Check the terms for the exact track, recording, territory, platform, channel, and uses.
Start with the lowest-ambiguity music sources
Music you created or commissioned
Music you wrote and recorded yourself is often the simplest route, provided you actually control the relevant rights. If performers, co-writers, lyricists, a producer, or a label contributed, document what each contributor has authorized. For commissioned music, put the intended uses in the agreement: continuous YouTube livestreaming in India, looping, monetization, and replay or later hosting if you plan to use them.

YouTube Audio Library
YouTube recommends its Audio Library as a source of music for creators. Check the individual track’s terms, including any attribution requirement, and keep a record of those terms. Do not assume that permission for one YouTube use automatically covers every format or use; make sure the terms fit a continuous stream and any replay you intend to keep available.
Creator Music and third-party libraries
YouTube also points creators to Creator Music where it is available, subject to its terms. Availability and track terms can vary, so confirm that the particular license permits the intended channel, territory, continuous livestream, monetization, and replay or VOD. Apply the same careful review to third-party music libraries and label catalogs. If a term such as “24/7,” “livestream,” or “archived replay” is not explicit, ask the licensor for written clarification before relying on the track.

Clear both the recording and the underlying song
A recording may involve separate rights in the sound recording and in the musical work and lyrics. The person or company that owns the recording may not control the composition or lyrics, and a rights organization may license only the works in its own repertoire. Identify the exact version you plan to use: the recording, arrangement, composition, and lyrics can each matter.
IPRS explains that its licensing concerns musical and literary works it controls, and that a song can involve both the sound recording and underlying works. Ask IPRS whether the relevant composition or lyrics are within its repertoire and what its license covers. That answer alone does not necessarily clear the recording; seek permission from the recording’s owner, such as the relevant label, where required. Buying a CD or digital copy gives you a copy to listen to, not automatically the right to communicate it to the public on a livestream.

Why an on-ground music license may not cover YouTube
Do not treat permission for music played at a venue as permission for a digital stream. PPL India says its cited on-ground license does not permit digital use, including online streaming; its FAQ says it does not license virtual music use and directs users to labels. A public-performance license may also apply only to specified repertoire and uses. For a YouTube stream, ask the relevant label or recording owner about digital permission, and separately check the composition and lyric rights.
IPRS has published guidance for specified online live events, but an event license is not automatically a license for a permanent 24/7 channel. Its online-event document took effect on 1 July 2020 and says additional permissions may be required; it excludes synchronization and subsequent hosting or repackaging. Do not apply historic event terms or rates to a continuous stream without checking their current applicability and obtaining advice for your use.

Do not assume the religious-ceremony exception applies
Section 52(1)(za) of India’s Copyright Act includes an exception for the performance or communication of works or recordings in the course of a bona fide religious ceremony. The statutory text does not, by itself, settle whether a continuous online music channel qualifies. A 24/7 public stream may extend beyond a particular ceremony or include monetization or other independent entertainment elements. “Devotional” is not enough to establish that the exception applies. Get advice from a qualified Indian copyright professional before relying on it for your channel.
A practical clearance workflow for a 24/7 stream
- Inventory every item in the stream. List each track, version, arrangement, recording, and lyric. Note whether the stream runs continuously, carries ads, sponsorships, or donations, and whether YouTube will retain a replay. A text or melody you believe is old or public domain does not automatically make a modern arrangement or recording free to use.
- Choose a source and locate its actual terms. Prefer your own properly cleared music or YouTube Audio Library tracks. For a library, label, or other catalog, read the license for the exact track. Ask for clarification if India, YouTube livestreaming, continuous looping, monetization, or VOD is not expressly addressed.
- Identify each rights holder. Confirm who controls the sound recording and who controls or administers the lyrics and composition. Ask IPRS about works in its repertoire, but do not assume that a composition license also clears the sound recording.
- Get permission that matches the planned use. Preserve written terms specifying the track, permitted channel and platform, territory, dates, live versus recorded use, looping, monetization, edits, and replay or later hosting. Ask how the licensor handles Content ID claims and whether it can release a claim for your channel or stream.
- Test the intended tracks where permitted. A private or unlisted test may help you notice a copyright notice in YouTube Studio. A clean test is not proof of clearance and does not rule out a later claim; retain the written permission and track-level records.
- Keep an audit folder and update it. Save the license version, receipts, correspondence, track metadata, and claim-release instructions. Recheck the terms when you replace a track or change from live-only use to an archived, clipped, or repackaged version.
Content ID claims: what they do and do not establish
Content ID is a platform-matching system, not a substitute for checking the license. A claim can appear even when you describe a track as free or have permission from a licensor: YouTube notes that Content ID does not know about permissions obtained elsewhere. Conversely, the absence of a claim does not prove that you have the required rights.

If a properly licensed track is claimed, check the claimant and the license scope, then follow YouTube’s claim-dispute process with the relevant documentation. Dispute only when you have a valid basis, such as permission that covers the actual use. Keep the licensor’s instructions for releasing claims and retain the evidence in case the issue recurs.

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. These are streaming and hosting features, not music rights: you still need to clear every track for your intended use. Quick Recap
Final checks before launch
- Can you identify the rights holder for both the recording and the underlying composition or lyrics?
- Does written permission cover India, YouTube livestreaming, continuous looping, monetization, and any replay you plan to retain?
- Have you checked attribution, channel limits, term dates, edits, and Content ID claim handling?
- Have you saved the license and evidence for every track, rather than relying on a credit line, purchase receipt, or clean test stream?
