If YouTube buffers most evenings on Hathway, compare the same device and viewing spot during the slowdown and at a quieter time, then repeat the test over Wi-Fi and Ethernet if possible. Evening timing is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove Hathway congestion. These checks help separate a Wi-Fi or device problem from a wider connection issue and give you a clear record to share with support.
Start with a repeatable evening test
Choose a time when buffering usually occurs and record what is happening before changing settings. Repeat the comparison at a quieter time using the same device and location. - Date and exact time of the test.
- Device, room, and whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Speed-test result and the YouTube playback quality selected or displayed.
- Whether downloads, cloud backups, video calls, or other streams are active.
- Whether another device in the home has the same problem.
For broadband measurements, TRAI points subscribers to its MySpeed App or Portal. TRAI does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers must disclose typical speeds in tariff offerings, and at least 90% of measured test samples must meet or exceed the declared typical speed. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If your device supports it, connect it directly to the router with a LAN/Ethernet cable and compare playback with Wi-Fi around the same time. Hathway’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether the connection is wireless or direct LAN, and describes a direct cable as generally faster and more reliable. Check the viewing location
If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi buffers, test beside the router and then at the usual viewing spot. Distance, walls, wireless interference, the device’s Wi-Fi capability, and other active devices can all affect wireless performance. YouTube likewise recommends testing near the TV, keeping the device within router range with minimal interference, and minimizing other connected devices. Move closer to the router and temporarily pause high-bandwidth activity before retesting. Hathway says connected devices share available bandwidth and suggests pausing downloads, streaming, and other high-bandwidth tasks while troubleshooting. Buying equipment is not the first step: a cable can help you make the comparison, but it cannot cure provider-side congestion.

Check whether the problem follows one device or YouTube
Pause competing household traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other streams for a short test. If YouTube improves, the connection may be contending with household use; repeat the test at the same time on another day before drawing a conclusion.
Try another supported device
Play the same video on another compatible device using the same connection. If only one device buffers, quit and reopen the YouTube app, restart the device, and check for app or system updates. Adjust playback quality
YouTube Help recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD streaming. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback, a TRAI minimum, or proof that a particular Hathway plan is at fault. Try selecting a lower video quality and observe whether playback stabilizes; compare that result with the connection measured at the viewing device during the buffering period. For live programming, YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause problems or delay even on a good network. If you run an always-on channel, the goal is stream continuity; changing a broadcast-delay setting is not a general fix for viewers whose ordinary YouTube playback buffers.

When to contact Hathway
If the slowdown repeats across multiple devices, particularly during a wired test, contact Hathway Broadband at 1800 419 3114. Provide the dates and evening time range, device and connection type, results from the quieter-time comparison, and whether other household traffic was paused. Ask the agent to log the pattern and keep the complaint reference or docket number. Hathway describes a unique complaint reference and escalation to its Appellate Authority if the complaint is unresolved within the applicable timeframe or you are dissatisfied with the resolution. TRAI’s MySpeed App or Portal can help document broadband measurements. Compare the results with the typical speed disclosed for your own tariff; do not assume a high advertised plan speed guarantees stable YouTube playback.
