If your YouTube live stream is being sent by an encoder on a Windows PC, the computer must stay awake for the encoder to keep sending video. Set the sleep timeout for the power condition you are using—usually “When plugged in”—to Never or to a period longer than the broadcast. You can still let the screen turn off; screen timeout and sleep timeout are separate settings.
Why a Windows computer going to sleep can stop a YouTube stream
In an encoder-based broadcast, the computer running the encoder is part of the live video path. YouTube’s setup guidance has the creator configure the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. If Windows puts that host to sleep, do not expect the encoder to continue sending the live feed. This applies to a stream sent from that computer; a stream produced by a remote service has a different host architecture.
Turning off the display is not the same as putting the computer to sleep. Windows can switch off the screen while leaving the computer awake, allowing an encoder to continue running.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake during the broadcast
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents this path in its Windows 11 power settings guidance.
- Find the power condition that will apply while streaming, such as When plugged in. Set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a timeout longer than the broadcast.
- If you will stream on battery, check and set the battery condition separately. Changing the plugged-in timeout does not necessarily change the battery timeout.
- Set Turn my screen off after to your preferred display timeout. The screen may turn off while the computer remains awake.
- Start a short test broadcast and confirm the computer stays awake. A test can help distinguish this setting from other causes, but it does not guarantee that a separate network or encoder issue is resolved.
Windows 10 settings and laptop lid behavior
Windows 10
Windows 10 commonly places screen and sleep controls under Settings > System > Power & sleep. Names and available options can differ by build and device. Check both plugged-in and battery values. If closing the lid or pressing the power button may be involved, open Additional power settings and inspect the lid and button actions. Microsoft’s sleep and shutdown guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Check the lid and power button on either version
Many laptops and tablets sleep when the lid is closed or the power button is pressed. An idle timeout may therefore not be the only setting that puts a streaming computer to sleep. Check the actions assigned to the lid and button before leaving a broadcast unattended.
What Microsoft’s example timeout figures mean
Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings page gives example defaults that vary by hardware sleep type. These figures describe defaults in that guidance, not universal settings for every PC or recommended streaming durations:
Rank #2
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- 4GB DDR4 System Memory; 128GB Solid State Drive
- 11.6" HD (1366 x 768) Multi-Touch Display
- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
| Device sleep type | On battery | Plugged in |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Standby | 4 minutes originally; adjusted to 3 minutes | 10 minutes originally; adjusted to 5 minutes |
| S3 | 15 minutes originally; adjusted to 10 minutes | 30 minutes originally; adjusted to 15 minutes |
The examples show why it is worth checking the actual setting on the device rather than assuming a particular timeout. The page does not state a publication year for these figures. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance distinguishes device categories; the values should not be treated as applying to all computers.
If the stream still disconnects while the PC stays awake
Once you have confirmed the computer remains awake, troubleshoot the network, encoder, and YouTube connection separately. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the role of the server URL and stream key. Its live encoder recommendations include RTMPS.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- The computer actually sleeps: recheck the timeout for the current power condition and inspect lid and power-button actions.
- The computer stays awake but Wi-Fi drops: investigate the wireless connection and its power behavior. Microsoft documents Wi-Fi battery-saving options for some Windows configurations; those options do not themselves prevent the computer from sleeping. See Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance.
- The encoder loses its YouTube connection: check the encoder’s connection status and the stream configuration, including the server URL and stream key.
Do not use Windows away mode as a general streaming fix. Microsoft describes it for cases where media applications need background work while the computer appears asleep and cautions against using it when unnecessary, particularly on portable computers. The relevant technical background is in Microsoft Learn’s System power states documentation.

If the aim is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud rather than on your sleeping PC: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
