If OBS crashes, reopen it and reconnect using the existing YouTube event’s server URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that the original event is still available, then verify OBS is sending audio and video and watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Avoid clicking End Stream or creating a replacement event while you are trying to preserve the current broadcast. YouTube documents how encoders connect, but does not promise that a restart will resume the same event or specify a reconnect grace period.
Reconnect OBS to the existing YouTube event
- Open the event in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the ongoing event. Do not end it or create another event as your first recovery step. YouTube’s encoder workflow associates the stream settings with an event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- Restart OBS and check its YouTube settings. In OBS, make sure the server URL and stream key match those shown for the existing event. YouTube says the encoder needs the event’s server URL and stream key to send its feed. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings
- Confirm OBS is sending the intended picture and sound. Check that the correct scene and sources are active, audio meters respond when sound is present, and OBS is not reporting an encoder error. If the computer is under heavy load, check CPU usage as part of troubleshooting. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Wait for the Live Control Room preview to show the incoming feed and review any health warnings or errors. YouTube displays error messages with timestamps and distinguishes critical from moderate errors. Use those messages to identify whether YouTube is receiving a problematic feed rather than relying only on OBS’s local status. Live streaming error messages
- Reset the key only if there is a reason. A key reset replaces the existing key, so you must update OBS with the new one. YouTube documents resetting a key for situations such as a compromised key; it is not the routine first fix for an OBS crash. Manage live stream settings
If the event remains available and the feed returns, keep monitoring the preview and stream health. If it does not recover, use the event controls deliberately: creating or starting another event may result in a different broadcast and watch page, and YouTube’s documentation does not say that a replacement event preserves the original one.
What a successful reconnect can—and cannot—guarantee
YouTube’s published guidance explains how an encoder connects using a server URL and stream key, and gives troubleshooting checks for the encoder and incoming feed. The reviewed YouTube Help pages do not establish a fixed number of seconds or minutes during which an encoder may reconnect, nor do they guarantee that restarting OBS after a crash will attach to the same event. So do not rely on a claimed grace period: check the actual event in Live Control Room and its current preview and health status.
Troubleshoot when OBS reconnects but the stream stays offline
- OBS appears connected, but the YouTube preview is blank or stale: Confirm OBS is sending the intended video source and that the correct event’s URL and key are configured. Check the Live Control Room’s error messages and timestamps.
- No audio reaches YouTube: Check that the intended audio source is active in OBS and that its meters respond. Then check the YouTube preview and health status.
- OBS reports encoding problems or the computer is overloaded: Check OBS’s encoder status and CPU load. YouTube recommends troubleshooting the encoder and its inputs; close unnecessary workloads if they are competing for system resources.
- The encoder looks healthy, but YouTube still reports a failing feed: Check the computer’s outbound internet connection and the Live Control Room’s specific error. A healthy-looking local encoder does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
- YouTube reports an incorrect stream format: YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for this ingestion error. Check the output format settings in OBS against the error shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance
- You suspect the stream key is compromised or no longer matches: Reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings only if appropriate, then copy the replacement key into OBS. A reset invalidates the old key for the encoder configuration.
Prepare a fallback before the next documentary stream
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview before going live, monitoring stream quality, and confirming that a local archive is growing. It also recommends testing backup-encoder failover before an event—for example, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm playback rolls over. That is a preventive test, not a guarantee that a backup will restore an event after OBS has already crashed. YouTube live streaming tips

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A local recording is still useful as a separate copy to check during a broadcast; do not assume an archive can repair an interrupted live event. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
