First check which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain—not proof that your Windows mini PC is too weak. Rendering lag and encoding lag are different problems, usually tied to local GPU or encoder load, and need different fixes.
Identify which OBS problem you have
During a stream, open OBS’s status area and note whether Dropped Frames (Network), Rendering Lag, or Encoding Lag is increasing. Save the OBS log for that session so you can review the conditions around the problem. A yellow or red connection indicator and a rising network dropped-frames counter mean the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames to avoid buffering; too many can disconnect the stream. OBS Project says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames (Stream Connection Troubleshooting; Dropped Frames?).
- Network dropped frames: follow the connection checks below.
- Rendering or encoding lag: use the local-load branch later in this guide. Lowering bitrate or changing network settings does not fix a GPU bottleneck.
The mini PC model, OBS log, scene complexity, connection type, upload stability, and YouTube’s stream-health messages are not known in advance. Diagnose those before buying hardware.
Fix network dropped frames in a useful order
1. Test a sustainable bitrate
A speed-test peak is not the same as upload capacity that remains steady throughout a live stream. OBS recommends starting around 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate rule of thumb, then checking whether the connection can sustain it. This is a starting point, not a guarantee for a fluctuating connection (OBS Project, 2024-09-30).

YouTube’s current guidance lists these recommended H.264 ranges: 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30. Those ranges describe encoder settings, not what your ISP connection can reliably deliver. Choose a bitrate that fits your stable upload headroom, then test the actual stream; lower it if network drops continue. YouTube recommends testing before the event with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health while live (YouTube Help, accessed 2026).
2. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi
If the mini PC is on Wi-Fi, test it over wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Compare otherwise similar test streams so you can tell whether the connection path changed the result (OBS Project).
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is relevant only if you need a cable to make this test or use a wired connection. It cannot resolve ISP congestion, an unsuitable bitrate, or unrelated OBS settings.

3. Check OBS’s Windows network settings
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, then test again.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
- If drops persist, you can test IPv4 Only. If it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 choice.
Change one setting at a time and compare test results rather than changing several variables together. These options are Windows-specific guidance from OBS Project (Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost or Killer NIC software, and outdated network drivers as possible causes of connection trouble. Test suspected software carefully and reversibly. Do not leave a firewall or antivirus disabled: if testing confirms it is interfering, add an OBS exception and re-enable the protection. Check for network-driver updates through the mini PC or network-adapter maker’s normal support channel.
5. Inspect the rest of the network path
Restart the modem or router if appropriate, and check the Ethernet cable, network adapter, router, switch, and any extender in the path. A fault or unstable link in any of these can affect the stream. If the problem persists after local checks, contact your ISP with the times of the drops, the OBS log, connection type, and bitrate used; OBS also recommends contacting the ISP when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the connection problem.

6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s Settings → Advanced → Network option Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce frame loss. It does not repair the underlying connection issue, and picture quality can fall while it adjusts. Use it when maintaining continuity matters more than holding a fixed bitrate (OBS Project).

These symptoms point to local work OBS cannot complete in time, not necessarily a network problem. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance notes that GPU saturation can leave OBS without enough time to composite the scene (OBS Project, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).
- Reduce the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, try 30 fps and compare.
- Simplify scenes; remove or limit costly sources, filters, and browser sources.
- Check whether other programs are using the GPU while OBS is streaming.
Make changes one at a time and test with the same representative content. These steps address local rendering or encoding load; they are not a cure for network dropped frames.

Check YouTube encoder settings before a test stream
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video encoding, up to 60 fps, with a recommended two-second keyframe interval and a maximum of four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Match the bitrate to both YouTube’s guidance for the selected quality and the connection’s stable capacity; a compatible setting cannot compensate for an unstable upload. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current recommendations.
Run a representative test before the documentary stream
- Use the intended resolution, frame rate, audio sources, and scene setup.
- Include representative movement as well as audio; a static screen may not reflect the workload or viewing quality of the real stream.
- Watch OBS’s network, rendering, and encoding counters, and check YouTube stream health.
- Save the OBS log if the test fails. Note the time, bitrate, connection type, and any stream-health warning before changing a setting.
This test helps separate a network issue from a local workload issue before an important broadcast.

What not to buy before diagnosing the cause
A rising network dropped-frames counter alone does not show that the mini PC needs replacing. Check the connection, sustainable bitrate, software, and OBS log first. If rendering or encoding lag is the issue, test lower output settings and a simpler scene before considering hardware. OBS is free and open source; OBS Project says it has no paid restrictions and warns that requests to pay for OBS are scams (OBS Project).
