First check YouTube Studio for the broadcast archive, then check whether the live event is still active and whether your streaming computer saved a local recording. If neither copy contains the missing interval, the footage cannot be recovered from the stream URL or playlist: the official YouTube guidance cited here does not describe a way to recreate unrecorded frames or merge an outage gap into one continuous recording.
1. Check the YouTube archive
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Live.
- Find the interrupted broadcast, open it, and check whether it plays and what its visibility is. You can change archive privacy in Studio. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is a duration caveat, not a guarantee that an interrupted stream will have a complete archive.
2. Check whether the live event is still active
Open Live Control Room and inspect the event’s state and preview. If it remains active, restore the encoder connection using the configured server URL and stream key. If the encoder cannot start, check that the key is correct and update it if necessary, following YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and troubleshooting steps.
Reconnect only if the event and setup allow it. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that an encoder reconnect after a power outage will resume the same event, restore the lost interval, or preserve one continuous recording.

3. Look for a local recording
- Check the encoder’s configured recording destination, including any external drive used for capture.
- Confirm that a file exists, opens, and covers the time that is missing from the YouTube archive.
- If the recording was still running before the outage, verify that the file is intact. A local file can provide footage only if it was being recorded and the data survived the outage.

4. Know what DVR can and cannot do
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live; it is not documented as a tool for rebuilding footage lost in a power outage. DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

5. If the missing footage is in neither copy
If the YouTube archive and any local recording both lack the interval, the cited YouTube documentation describes no method to recover frames that were never recorded. A playlist or stream URL does not itself provide a recoverable copy of video data.
Prevent the same loss on a future stream
- Keep a local recording. Set a recording destination and verify during the stream that the file is intact and growing. A local recording drive helps only when recording is actually enabled and the file survives.
- Test encoder failover. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover before an event; confirm the backup can take over under your setup rather than assuming it will work.
- Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% room above the stream’s needs and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. This is a preventive network recommendation, not an outage-recovery specification. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Plan for power continuity. As a practical precaution, consider whether the encoder and the storage receiving its local recording will remain powered during an outage. Keeping only the encoder on is not enough if the recording destination loses power.
For encoder setup, YouTube’s live stream encoder guide covers creating a stream with an encoder. Its HLS setup guidance applies only if you use HLS ingestion: it specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP; these settings do not provide a special recovery path for a power outage.
