Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo edit a screen recording for YouTube, remove mistakes and dead time, arrange the useful actions in a clear sequence, add only the narration or visual emphasis that helps viewers follow along, then export and inspect the finished file before uploading. A dependable target is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio, progressive scan, and the same frame rate as the original recording.
1. Review the recording before you edit
Watch the full capture once before making cuts. Mark the moments that interrupt the explanation or make the task harder to follow:
- Mistakes, failed attempts, and repeated actions that do not teach the viewer anything.
- Long pauses, loading screens, and stretches where nothing relevant happens.
- Sections that are out of order or unrelated to the demonstration.
- Audio gaps, unexpected notifications, or blank and frozen sections.
Do not remove every pause automatically. A short pause can give viewers time to read a setting or understand a result. Keep enough of the screen before and after each action to establish where the viewer is and what changed.
2. Build a clear edit
Trim and arrange the useful actions
Place steps in the order a viewer needs them, even if the original capture included backtracking. Cut around mistakes without cutting away the context that explains why the next click or screen matters. After trimming, check that each transition is understandable: viewers should be able to tell what page or app they are in and what the action accomplished.

Add narration and emphasis only when they help
Use concise narration, labels, zooms, or cursor emphasis to clarify a decision or direct attention to a control. Avoid covering interface text with graphics. If you zoom in, keep enough surrounding interface visible to orient the viewer; check that essential text remains readable at ordinary playback size.
Review the whole timeline
Play the edited video from beginning to end. Check for cuts that hide a step, missing audio, unintended blank sections, abrupt transitions, and text or controls that are too small to read. A timeline that looks tidy while paused can still contain a confusing jump or silent stretch in playback.

3. Choose a recording format and delivery format
The container used to record and the format exported for YouTube are separate workflow decisions. A container such as MKV or MP4 holds audio and video streams; it does not by itself determine image quality. OBS recommends MKV for many recording workflows because it can be remuxed into a more compatible container. Its guide also identifies fragmented MP4/MOV as a useful option for some editing and platform-upload workflows, including common editors such as Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
If your capture is MKV and your editor or upload workflow needs another container, remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video. Exporting or transcoding, by contrast, encodes the media and can affect quality depending on the settings. Follow the needs of your editor and delivery workflow; changing containers alone is not a quality improvement.

4. Export settings for YouTube
YouTube Help recommends MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, progressive scan, and the frame rate used during recording. It describes these encoding features in the context of partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so treat the figures below as YouTube’s published recommendations rather than a guarantee that every editor or upload needs an exact bitrate. Check the current YouTube recommended upload encoding settings if your workflow requires more detail, including HDR guidance.
Suggested SDR video bitrates
| Resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube lists 384 kbps and a 48 kHz sample rate. Export at the frame rate you recorded unless you have a specific reason to convert; changing frame rate can alter motion and may introduce unevenness.

Aspect ratio and legibility
YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for computer playback. Its player adapts to other aspect ratios, so do not stretch a recording just to fill a 16:9 frame. Keep the source proportions, and use a 16:9 project when that matches the capture and the intended desktop presentation. For a screen tutorial, inspect the exported file at a typical playback size to ensure menus, labels, and cursor actions remain legible.
5. Inspect the export, then upload
- Export using the settings that match your source frame rate and desired resolution.
- Open the exported file and watch it through, rather than relying only on the editor preview.
- Check the opening and ending, every edited transition, audio sync and volume, and the smallest interface text.
- Confirm that the file plays correctly and that the image has not been stretched, cropped unexpectedly, or left with blank sections.
- Upload the inspected file to YouTube. Allow YouTube to process the upload, then check playback at the available quality levels before sharing it.
6. Copyright and monetization considerations
Editing does not make material you do not own or have permission to use automatically safe to publish. Review the rights for music, video, images, and other included material before uploading. A tutorial made from your own screen capture can still contain third-party content, such as a song playing in the background or copyrighted video shown inside an app. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance does not establish that a video is eligible for monetization; do not treat format or editing choices as a substitute for rights review or YouTube’s applicable policies.
