To stream from FFmpeg on an Indian VPS, copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the VPS’s FFmpeg build supports rtmps, and send an FLV output to YouTube over port 443. The VPS being in India does not guarantee that its provider permits the required outbound connection or can sustain your chosen bitrate, so test the route and stream health before relying on it.

What you need before configuring RTMPS

  • An Indian VPS with FFmpeg installed and enough compute capacity if FFmpeg will encode the video.
  • Outbound TCP access to port 443 and enough sustained upstream capacity for the stream.
  • A YouTube live stream and its current RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • An input file or live source, plus video and audio settings compatible with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

RTMPS sends RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifies port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. Use the exact server URL currently shown for your stream rather than relying on an old or familiar example hostname. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance and its ingestion protocol documentation.

Configure YouTube RTMPS in FFmpeg, step by step

  1. Install FFmpeg and check the available protocols

Install FFmpeg using a trusted package or build for your VPS operating system. Protocol support varies by build. Run ffmpeg -protocols and check that rtmps appears. FFmpeg documents this command for listing protocols supported by the installed tools; a custom or selectively configured build may omit protocols. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

  2. Copy the current stream URL and key

Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL, then copy the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose a real key in a public script, support ticket, screenshot, or shell history. The key belongs in the destination path used by your encoder.

  3. Choose encoder settings for the actual stream

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, the guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your exact resolution and frame rate; do not copy a bitrate from an unrelated example. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 video with AAC audio is a conventional option if your FFmpeg build includes the required encoders. Match output resolution and frame rate to the source and the bitrate you select. For a two-second keyframe interval, use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. The precise constant-bitrate options depend on the encoder you use, so confirm their meaning for your FFmpeg build.

  4. Build the RTMPS output

For a file input that FFmpeg should read at real-time speed, adapt this template. Replace every placeholder with the actual input, settings, and URL components from YouTube; never publish a real stream key.

    ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 \
      -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE \
      -maxrate VIDEO_MAXRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER \
      -r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_FRAMES \
      -c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE \
      -f flv 'rtmps://HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY'

The destination must use the exact server and path YouTube currently provides, with the rtmps scheme and port 443. FFmpeg documents RTMP-style URL syntax as protocol://server[:port]/app/playpath; YouTube requires a valid ingestion URL and path. This is a template, not a universal tested command: your FFmpeg build may not include libx264 or another requested encoder. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and YouTube’s ingestion guide.

  5. Start the stream and check YouTube’s status

Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the stream and review its health before announcing the broadcast or depending on it. A stream that connects is not necessarily configured for the intended quality or stable operation.

Check the Indian VPS network path

An India-region VPS is a location choice, not proof of suitable routing, available throughput, or permission to send RTMPS. Before relying on it, verify outbound TCP port 443 access with your VPS provider and inspect the server firewall and provider egress policy. Confirm that sustained upstream capacity is sufficient for the selected video and audio bitrates. No India-specific latency, throughput benchmark, or provider ranking is established here; check the service and route you will actually use.

Troubleshoot common RTMPS problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
SSL certificate error The URL scheme, server, or port is wrong, or the copied URL is stale. Copy the current RTMPS URL again and confirm it uses rtmps. If the URL appears correct, explicitly specify port 443. Do not switch to unencrypted RTMP to work around an SSL error. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
Connection timeout Incorrect destination, missing RTMPS support, blocked outbound port, firewall rule, or provider egress restriction. Re-copy the URL, check rtmps in ffmpeg -protocols, and verify outbound port 443 from the VPS. Check both the host firewall and provider policy rather than assuming an India-region server allows the connection.
Unknown protocol or unsupported output The installed FFmpeg build does not include RTMPS support. Run ffmpeg -protocols. If rtmps is absent, install or build a version that provides it, then check again. FFmpeg notes that protocols can be disabled or selectively enabled at build time.
The stream connects but quality or health is poor Bitrate does not fit the resolution and frame rate, keyframes are too far apart, or the VPS cannot sustain the upstream load. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected resolution and frame rate, use constant-bitrate encoding and the recommended two-second keyframe frequency, and compare FFmpeg output with YouTube’s stream-health information. Check sustained VPS egress capacity rather than assuming the encoder is at fault.

When a different ingestion protocol may fit

For the setup in this guide, RTMPS is the path being configured. YouTube also supports RTMP, HLS, and DASH ingestion. Choose another protocol only if your workflow requires its implementation or trade-offs: the protocol choice affects encryption, supported features and codecs, latency, and encoder compatibility. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency use, while HLS is a higher-quality option with relatively higher latency. Compare the current options in YouTube’s ingestion protocol guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded video rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an always-running FFmpeg process on a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
