How to Diagnose YouTube RTMP Packet Loss with FFmpeg Logs

FFmpeg progress is not a packet-loss counter. Correlate timestamped logs with YouTube’s stream health and local encoder output, then gather network measurements for direct evidence.

FFmpeg logs can help you pinpoint when a YouTube live stream stalls or fails, but FFmpeg’s normal progress output is not a packet-loss counter. To diagnose a suspected problem, preserve a timestamped log, compare it with YouTube’s stream-health messages and your local encoder output, then collect host or network measurements if you need direct evidence of packet loss.

What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you

FFmpeg’s -stats output reports encoding progress; it does not, by itself, count lost IP packets or identify where they were lost. RTMP in FFmpeg’s documented protocol description is carried over TCP/IP, so the log is an application-level view of the publishing process, not a complete view of the network path. A warning, low output rate, viewer buffering, or dropped frames alone does not prove packet loss.

Use three observations together: FFmpeg’s messages and timing, YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status, and the encoder’s local preview or recording. YouTube reports ingestion status and platform-provided errors, but that status alone cannot identify the local network segment at fault. For direct network evidence, collect operating-system interface or TCP counters, or capture packets during the event.

Save a useful FFmpeg log safely

FFmpeg writes its default logs to stderr. For a reproduction, save stderr and retain the exact command with the stream key removed or replaced before sharing. Increase verbosity to verbose; use debug if the first capture lacks useful context. FFmpeg also supports level and time/date prefixes. Its -report option writes a timestamped report containing the command line and log output, and implies debug verbosity. Treat that report as sensitive: redact stream keys and other credentials.

ffmpeg -loglevel repeat+level+time+verbose -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY' 2>ffmpeg-live.log

This illustrates log capture and RTMPS output syntax; it is not a recommendation that these encoding options suit every source or stream. Substitute your actual input and output locally, never publish a live stream key, and keep global options such as log level before the inputs and outputs they govern. Avoid debug-level logging for an entire event unless log volume and credential handling are controlled.

Build a timeline across the encoder and YouTube

  1. Mark the first symptom. Record when the stream-health status changes, FFmpeg first warns, errors, or appears to stall, and whether the local preview or archive changes at the same time.
  2. Check the local pipeline. Look at the encoder’s direct output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and local recording. If the preview or archive is also bad and CPU pressure or encoder errors coincide, investigate the source or encoding stage first.
  3. Compare YouTube’s status. Read the Live Control Room stream-health message and its instructions, and compare their timing with the FFmpeg log. A healthy local output alongside YouTube-reported stream trouble is a reason to investigate the outbound connection; it does not prove that the ISP is responsible.
  4. Classify the failure before changing settings. Distinguish encoding that cannot keep up from a connection write or timeout failure. The exact FFmpeg message varies with its build, protocol implementation, and failure mode; there is no universal RTMP log line that proves packet loss.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output, errors, CPU load, source quality, and the local archive; if these appear healthy, test the outbound connection and contact the ISP if you find connection issues. Keep the observations separate: a drop reported by an encoder, a YouTube health alert, and a measured network counter describe different points in the pipeline.

Check upload capacity and stream settings

YouTube’s advice is direct: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube recommends a 20% margin between the stream’s total bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Count both primary and backup streams in the total. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and a speed test under one set of conditions does not guarantee a clean path under the event’s full traffic load.

Check the current YouTube settings guidance for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate intended for another configuration. The current YouTube Help page covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps; it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so verify the guidance for your setup before changing encoder settings.

Test the outbound path and gather direct evidence

  • Run an outbound speed test during conditions representative of the stream, then compare the result with the combined bitrate of primary and backup outputs. Treat it as a test of available capacity at that time, not proof that the route will remain clear throughout the event.
  • If practical, compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi while holding other conditions as steady as possible. This can help test your local connection path; it does not measure packet loss or establish whether a fault lies in your LAN, ISP, route, or YouTube ingestion.
  • If you need direct loss evidence, collect host network-interface counters and TCP statistics, or make a packet capture during the reproduction. Note the measurement point and time window. These observations establish only what was visible at that point and time, not a complete diagnosis of the entire route.

A cable may be useful for a controlled wired-versus-wireless comparison, but it is not a packet-loss diagnostic or a guaranteed fix. Do not infer end-to-end loss solely from buffering, a lower-than-target bitrate, dropped frames, or an FFmpeg log line.

Interpret common symptoms without overcalling packet loss

Observation What it supports What it does not establish alone
FFmpeg verbose/debug messages or -stats FFmpeg’s messages, processing progress, and timing context A direct count of lost IP packets or their location
YouTube Live Control Room stream health Ingestion status and YouTube’s reported errors or instructions The exact local network segment at fault
Encoder preview, CPU observations, or local archive Source quality, local encoding pressure, and whether the recording is intact Whether packets were lost on the outbound route
Upload test, host TCP counters, or packet capture Upload capacity under test conditions or network evidence at the measurement point A complete diagnosis beyond the point and time measured

“Connection timed out” or failure to connect

A timeout is a connection-setup or communication symptom, not a direct packet-loss reading. Check the output URL, port, protocol, encoder configuration, and YouTube’s status messages. If the error coincides with a healthy local preview but stream trouble at YouTube, include outbound capacity and network-path checks in the investigation.

“The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate”

This is an SSL/protocol configuration symptom, not proof that packets were lost. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises checking that the configured URL is actually RTMPS and that the encoder supports it. Do not expose the stream key while sharing the URL or logs.

Dropped frames, buffering, or a bitrate dip

First identify which stage reported the drop and whether the local preview or archive was affected. If local output is also poor, check source and encoder health; if it is healthy while YouTube reports trouble, investigate outbound capacity and collect network evidence. None of these symptoms alone locates packet loss.
