You can also use auto-sync for a transcript in the same language as the speech—but it does not translate speech into Hindi.
Choose the right Hindi subtitle method
First decide whether you need transcription or translation. If the recording is spoken in Hindi, you need Hindi transcription. If it is spoken in another language and you want Hindi subtitles, you need a Hindi translation. The method depends on whether you already have timed subtitles, a transcript, or neither.
| Method | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Upload a timed subtitle file | You already have Hindi subtitles with timestamps. | The file must use a supported format. A basic SubRip (.srt) file should be plain UTF-8. |
| Type manually | A short replay, or making a small number of corrections. | You enter subtitles while working through the video and set their timing. |
| Auto-sync | You have a transcript in the same language as the spoken audio and need YouTube to time it. | It is not a translation method. YouTube does not recommend it for videos over an hour or videos with poor audio. |
| Automatic VOD captions | You want to check whether YouTube has generated captions for speech in a supported language, including Hindi. | Captions may be delayed or inaccurate, and they do not translate speech in another language into Hindi. |
YouTube’s instructions for creating tracks are in Add subtitles & captions; supported uploads are listed in Supported subtitle and closed caption files.
Add Hindi subtitles in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the channel that owns the replay and choose Subtitles from the left-hand menu.
- Select the replay. Choose the archived video of the live event you want to edit.
- Add Hindi. Select Add language, then choose Hindi.
- Open the Hindi track. Under Hindi, select Add.
- Choose how to create the subtitles. Upload a timed file, type subtitles manually, or use auto-sync with a same-language transcript.
- Save or publish the track. Use the available save or publish option, then play the replay to confirm the subtitles appear at the right moments.
Studio labels and feature availability can change. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are available in YouTube Help.

Upload a timed Hindi subtitle file
If you have a translated Hindi subtitle file with timings, use Upload file in the Hindi track. Choose the option that indicates the file already contains timing information, then select the file and follow Studio’s prompts. A basic SRT is a straightforward option: save it as plain UTF-8 so Hindi characters display correctly. Check the format requirements in YouTube’s supported-file guidance.
Before uploading, check that the timestamps match the replay—not just the original live start time if the archived video begins differently. After publishing, review the file in the player and correct mistimed cues, script errors, names, and line breaks.

Enter subtitles manually or use auto-sync
Type subtitles manually
Choose the manual-entry option in the Hindi track, play the replay, and enter each Hindi subtitle as the relevant speech occurs. Set the cue timing using the controls in Studio, then save or publish. This can work for a short replay or a small number of corrections; for a long event, a timed file may be easier to manage.
Use auto-sync only with a matching-language transcript
Auto-sync takes a transcript and aligns it to the video. The transcript needs to be in the language spoken in the recording. For example, use a Hindi transcript for Hindi speech. If the audio is in English or another language and you want Hindi, prepare translated Hindi subtitles and upload them or enter them manually instead. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos over an hour or for poor-quality audio.

Check whether YouTube generated captions for the replay
YouTube treats live captions and captions for the archived video differently. Its Help guidance says automatic captions for live streams are available in English only. Those live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends; YouTube generates a separate set through its video-on-demand process, and the new captions may differ. Hindi is listed for automatic captions on long-form videos, so check the replay’s subtitle options if the speech itself is Hindi—but do not assume Hindi live automatic captions were available during the broadcast or that VOD captions are ready immediately.
Machine-generated captions can mishear speech because of accents, dialects, mispronunciations, or background noise. Review and correct them before relying on them. See Use automatic captioning for YouTube’s guidance.

Why live-caption setup is different
Instructions for sending captions into a live broadcast describe live ingestion, such as embedded captions or caption data sent through supported software. That is not the workflow for adding a Hindi track to an event that has already ended. For the replay, use YouTube Studio’s Subtitles workflow. YouTube’s separate Live caption requirements page covers captions sent during a broadcast.

- Hindi characters display incorrectly: Check that an uploaded SRT is saved as plain UTF-8, then upload it again and review the track in the player.
- Subtitles are out of sync: Check the timestamps against the archived replay itself. Correct the timings in your source file or use Studio’s editing controls.
- Auto-sync produces unusable timing or text: Confirm the transcript matches the spoken language. Poor audio and very long videos can make auto-sync unsuitable; use a timed file or manual editing instead.
- Hindi translation is missing or wrong: Auto-sync does not translate. Supply translated Hindi text as a subtitle file or enter it manually.
- Live captions disappeared after the event: This is expected for YouTube’s automatic live captions. Check for separately generated VOD captions or add your own Hindi track.
- Automatic captions contain errors: Listen to the replay while checking names, technical terms, accents, dialects, and speech masked by background noise; edit the captions before publishing.
