To fix a YouTube Live resolution warning, make the encoded stream’s width and height match the resolution selected in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s loop setting repeats frames; it does not set the output resolution. Check YouTube’s selected resolution and the dimensions FFmpeg actually sends, then adjust the output size or scale filter if they differ.
What YouTube’s resolution warning means
YouTube checks the video stream it receives. Its error guide says the encoded video must have the height and width selected on the Ingestion Settings page. A warning can mean the current resolution is not optimal, or that it is unsupported for the selected configuration; in the latter case, YouTube may show the expected dimensions. YouTube’s live streaming error messages describe these cases.
The warning is about the dimensions of the encoded output, not simply the dimensions of the source file. Filters or other output settings may affect the dimensions before encoding.
Check YouTube and FFmpeg before changing the command
- Read the warning in Live Control Room. Note the selected resolution in Ingestion Settings and any expected width and height shown in the warning.
- Check the dimensions FFmpeg outputs. Don’t assume the input file’s dimensions are preserved through the full filter and encoding chain.
- Compare the two. The encoded output dimensions need to agree with YouTube’s selected ingestion resolution.
- Check the stream key’s resolution setting. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you selected a manual resolution using a custom stream key, make sure the encoder outputs that same resolution.
- Preview and monitor the stream. Send a test with representative video and audio, review the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen settings.
YouTube’s guidance recommends leaving 20% extra upload bandwidth. When using both a primary and backup stream, include both in the bandwidth available. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection headroom and testing.

Set FFmpeg’s output dimensions to match
If the encoded dimensions differ from YouTube’s selection, set the output to the intended width and height. FFmpeg’s -s option applies scaling at the end of the output filter graph. When the position of scaling relative to other filters matters, use the scale filter directly so you can place it in the filter chain. See the FFmpeg documentation for output options and the scale filter documentation.
Use the dimensions YouTube expects for the selected ingestion setting, rather than guessing based on the input file or choosing a resolution just because it is common. Scaling changes output dimensions; it does not fix an unsuitable bitrate, frame rate or codec by itself.

Why the loop setting does not fix resolution
FFmpeg’s loop video filter repeats frames. Setting loop=-1 requests infinite repetition, but it does not define the output width or height. A video can loop continuously and still trigger a resolution warning if its encoded dimensions do not match YouTube’s selected setting. See the FFmpeg loop filter documentation.
Keep the loop logic separate from the output-size correction. Without your current command, input dimensions, filters, codec, frame rate and YouTube setting, there is no safe exact replacement command to prescribe. Changing the entire command could disrupt a working loop or audio mapping when only the output dimensions need adjustment.

Check the other encoder settings if the warning persists
A resolution mismatch is a dimensions problem, but YouTube may also report other stream health issues. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval with a maximum of 4 seconds, and specifies CBR. Match codec and bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder settings guide provides its current recommendations.
For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as a recommended bitrate for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube-published recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not independent performance measurements, and the page does not state a publication year. Choose a rate your connection can sustain with adequate headroom.
