To send a prerecorded video to YouTube through Restream, connect your channel under Channels > Add New > YouTube, then schedule the file using Pre-recorded livestream. You do not need to create a Custom RTMP destination or run an encoder for this workflow: Restream says the scheduled video or playlist starts automatically at the event time.
Choose the right Restream workflow
“RTMP destination” can mean different things in Restream. For a prerecorded file scheduled to play on YouTube, use Restream’s native YouTube connection and its Pre-recorded livestream workflow. Custom RTMP is an alternative for connecting an already-created YouTube event by its stream URL and key; it is not required just to schedule a video.
| Your goal | Restream path | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule a prerecorded video or playlist | Connect YouTube under Channels, then use Pre-recorded livestream | Restream says playback starts automatically at the scheduled time. Restream scheduling guide |
| Attach a YouTube event you already created | Edit the YouTube channel in Restream’s RTMP setup and select the event from the Event dropdown | This uses the connected YouTube integration. Restream’s existing-event guide |
| Connect an existing event by its YouTube URL and stream key | Add the event as a Custom RTMP channel | Restream says Custom RTMP requires a paid plan; API-dependent features such as Restream Chat and Analytics do not work for custom channels. Restream’s existing-event guide |
| Send a live encoder output through Restream | Create an Encoder | RTMP stream and enter Restream’s URL and key in the encoder | This is a live encoder-input workflow, not the scheduled-file workflow. Restream’s encoder guide |
Before you connect YouTube
- Use the Google account that owns the channel. Restream says the channel owner must connect it; a manager or editor is not sufficient. If the wrong channel appears, disconnect or revisit the connection and choose the account that owns the intended channel. Restream’s YouTube guide
- Enable YouTube live streaming. Restream’s YouTube guide says first-time activation requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait before streaming. Allow for that delay before scheduling a time-sensitive premiere or broadcast. Restream’s YouTube guide
- Check the event and account in your own dashboard. Destination availability, plan permissions, event selection, and event-level settings can vary by account. Confirm the selected YouTube channel and schedule before relying on an event.
Add your YouTube channel to Restream
- Sign in to Restream and open Channels.
- Select Add New > YouTube.
- Choose the Google account that owns the YouTube channel you want to use.
- Review and grant the requested authorization. When the connection is complete, verify that the intended channel appears in Restream’s channel list.
Restream’s documented native connection flow is described in its YouTube setup guide. If you cannot see the channel you expect, first check which Google account was authorized and whether that account owns the channel.
Schedule the prerecorded video
- In Restream, open Pre-recorded livestream.
- Choose Video for a single file or Playlist for multiple files.
- Select the video file or playlist you want to broadcast.
- Enter the event details and set the date and time. Check the displayed time zone against the time you intend viewers to see.
- Select YouTube as a destination and confirm that the connected channel is the right one.
- Review the schedule and destination, then schedule the livestream.
Restream says the scheduled video or playlist goes live automatically at the scheduled time, without an operator starting an external encoder. Its scheduling guide documents the Video and Playlist flow. Check the event in your Restream dashboard after scheduling so you can catch an incorrect channel or time before it begins.

If you already created a YouTube event
Select the event through the connected YouTube channel
If your YouTube event already exists, Restream’s documented integration route is to edit the YouTube channel in its RTMP setup and choose the event from the Event dropdown. This is distinct from scheduling a file through the Pre-recorded livestream flow. Follow the event-selection steps in Restream’s existing YouTube Event guide, and verify that the event you intend to use is selected.
Use Custom RTMP only when you need the URL-and-key route
Restream also documents adding the existing YouTube event as a Custom RTMP channel by copying its stream URL and key from YouTube Live Dashboard. Restream says this option requires a paid plan. Its guide also notes that API-dependent features, including Restream Chat and Analytics, are unavailable on custom channels. See Restream’s Custom RTMP instructions before choosing this route.

Why you usually do not need an encoder or stream key
When scheduling a prerecorded file inside Restream, the file is the source and Restream handles the scheduled playback. The separate encoder workflow is for sending a live encoder output to Restream: create an Encoder | RTMP stream and enter Restream’s provided URL and key in your streaming software. YouTube’s encoder instructions likewise use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in an encoder. Those steps are for encoder-driven streams, not a prerequisite to schedule a prerecorded file in Restream. See Restream’s encoder setup and YouTube’s encoder guide.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The wrong channel appears: Check that you authorized the Google account that owns the intended YouTube channel. Restream says channel ownership is required for its connection flow. Restream’s YouTube guide
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Confirm that live streaming is enabled. For first-time activation, Restream reports phone verification and a 24-hour wait. Schedule only after activation is complete. Restream’s YouTube guide
- You cannot find the existing event: Check that you are editing the connected YouTube channel’s RTMP setup and looking in the Event dropdown. If using Custom RTMP instead, follow Restream’s separate event URL-and-key instructions. Restream’s existing-event guide
- Custom RTMP is unavailable: Restream says Custom RTMP requires a paid plan. Use the native YouTube connection and scheduled prerecorded workflow if your goal is simply to play a file on your channel. Restream’s existing-event guide
- The event is scheduled for the wrong time or destination: Reopen the event in Restream and verify its date, displayed time zone, selected YouTube channel, and event selection. These settings are account-specific.
Long broadcasts and YouTube settings
Restream’s YouTube guide reports that YouTube has no stream-duration limit but archives only streams under 12 hours. Treat that as the behavior reported by Restream, not a guarantee about every current account or event; check the current YouTube and Restream dashboards before planning a long documentary marathon. The same guide reports a YouTube title limit of 100 characters, a description limit of 5,000 characters, and recommended bitrates from 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. Those are setup figures published by Restream in its guide dated July 9, 2026, not a substitute for reviewing current encoder or event requirements. Restream’s YouTube guide

Copyright and documentary rights
Only schedule a documentary or playlist when you have the rights and permissions needed for the footage, music, narration, photographs, and other material in it. A prerecorded broadcast does not bypass YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Review the permissions for every asset and consult YouTube’s current policies if you are unsure whether your use is allowed.
