To keep a YouTube stream key out of your typed Bash command history, read it separately without echoing it, then use a shell variable in the FFmpeg command. This reduces the chance of saving the literal key in your history; it does not guarantee the key is hidden from FFmpeg’s arguments or from every local observer.
Why the stream key needs protection
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a password and an address: it identifies where an encoder sends a feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a credential. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed using that key, so avoid exposing it in commands, screenshots, recordings, scripts, or shared logs.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers. That protects the network connection; it does not remove a key from shell history or establish that it is hidden from local process inspection.
Read the key separately in Bash
In a Bash-like shell, you can prompt for the key without displaying it and then reference the variable:

unset YT_KEYThis is an illustrative shell pattern, not a verified, complete FFmpeg command for every input or setup. Confirm the correct YouTube ingestion URL and the output options required by your FFmpeg configuration. Do not type the literal key into the output URL at the prompt.
- Enter the read command. The
-soption suppresses typed characters, and-rprevents backslash interpretation. Press Enter after entering the command. - Paste the key at the prompt. The input is not echoed to the terminal. Press Enter to complete the read.
- Run FFmpeg. Replace
[input options]with the appropriate input arguments for your setup. The shell expands${YT_KEY}when it launches FFmpeg. - Clear the shell variable. Run
unset YT_KEYwhen finished. This removes that shell variable; it does not erase copies already passed to a process or stored elsewhere.
Keep shell tracing off while handling the key: do not enable set -x. If a command fails, avoid copying a terminal transcript or diagnostic output into a shared location until you have checked that it contains no credential.

What this pattern does—and does not—hide
The key is not part of the command you typed at the interactive prompt, which can help keep it out of the shell’s ordinary command-history entry. But variable expansion inserts the key into the output URL passed to FFmpeg. Whether another local user or monitoring tool can see that argument depends on the operating system, permissions, logging, and process-inspection tools. There is no universal answer to whether it will appear in a process listing such as ps.
A shell or environment variable is not, by itself, secure storage. The pattern reduces history exposure; it is not a guarantee against local access, shell tracing, monitoring, or other logging. For stronger local isolation, use a trusted encoder integration with protected secret configuration, and verify how that integration stores and passes credentials.

If the key may have been exposed
If you pasted it into a command, included it in a screenshot or recording, or shared a log that may contain it, treat the key as compromised. YouTube documents resetting a stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder; only a channel owner or manager can reset it. Deleting a history entry alone is not reliable incident response because copies may remain in recordings, logs, backups, or other locations.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and reset the affected stream key.
- Replace the old key in the encoder or integration that sends the stream.
- Check relevant screenshots, recordings, scripts, and shared logs for exposed copies, and restrict or remove them where possible.
