For most people starting with desktop live streaming, OBS Studio is the best place to begin: it is free, open source, works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and gives you control over scenes, sources, audio, and stream settings. If you prefer an integrated creator interface, consider Streamlabs Desktop. For a complex multi-camera show, compare vMix and Wirecast against your specific production needs rather than assuming one is universally best.
If your goal is not to operate a live production but to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it runs the loop in the cloud instead of encoding a live camera or desktop production.
What encoding software does
A streaming encoder converts video into a digital format that can be sent live to a platform. Software encoders run on a computer; hardware encoders are standalone devices. YouTube describes encoder workflows as useful for gameplay and screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, and more advanced productions involving multiple cameras and microphones. To connect an encoder to YouTube, use the stream URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
An encoder is not the camera or microphone itself. It combines and processes the sources you provide, then sends the resulting stream to the selected destination. The right choice depends on your operating system, inputs, production complexity, computer capacity, destination, and preference for control or a guided interface.

Best live streaming encoders by workflow
OBS Studio: best general-purpose starting point
OBS Studio is free and open source, with versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It lets you combine sources into scenes, use transitions, apply audio filters to individual sources, preview scenes in Studio Mode, use Multiview, configure stream settings, and extend the workflow with plugins or scripts through its API. Those capabilities make it a strong fit if you want flexibility and are willing to learn a configurable interface. They do not establish that OBS produces better video or uses fewer resources than competing encoders.
Review the OBS Studio product overview and its system requirements. The requirements guidance cautions that a computer compatible with OBS is not automatically capable of handling every streaming workload: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The system-requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, so check current compatibility information for the release you plan to install.

Streamlabs Desktop: consider for a bundled creator workflow
Streamlabs Desktop is built on OBS and adds a creator-oriented interface with bundled features such as alerts, shortcuts, tipping, face masks, and overlays, as listed in YouTube’s encoder directory. It may suit you if those integrated tools fit your show better than assembling a workflow yourself. Check the current plan terms and exactly which features are included before paying.
Hardware needs depend on the content, other programs running, and the complexity of overlays or plugins. Streamlabs’ system requirements guidance, displayed as dated April 25, 2025, distinguishes minimum and recommended PC requirements and notes that demanding content and advanced overlays can change what is adequate.

vMix and Wirecast: investigate for involved productions
If you are producing a multi-camera show or another complex program, include vMix and Wirecast in your evaluation. YouTube includes Wirecast in its software-encoder directory and identifies advanced productions as an encoder use case. The available product information does not establish a reliable feature-by-feature comparison or current pricing for either product. Before choosing, verify each vendor’s current details for operating-system support, device limits, inputs, destinations, and price: vMix and Wirecast.
How to choose for your production
Write down what the show actually needs before installing software. A simple screen-share stream and a multi-camera program place very different demands on the operator and computer.

- Check your operating system and computer. Confirm that the encoder supports your OS and that your hardware can handle the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. A compatible computer is not necessarily powerful enough for the workload.
- Count your sources. List cameras, microphones, game consoles, screen captures, and remote contributors. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers everything from gameplay and screen sharing to productions with several cameras and microphones.
- Confirm the destination connection. Check that your streaming platform supports the encoder’s connection method and obtain the correct account access and output requirements. For YouTube, you will connect using the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.
- Choose your preferred balance of control and convenience. Decide whether you need detailed control over scenes, audio processing, previews, plugins, and stream configuration, or prefer a more integrated creator toolkit.
- Calculate the whole setup cost. Check current license or subscription terms and include any capture hardware, cameras, or microphones you need. No current cross-vendor price comparison is established here.
Equipment: what is optional and what is not
The encoder application does not replace source equipment. A casual gaming stream may use a webcam, external microphone, and headphones; a professional production may need several microphones and cameras, a mixer, or a hardware encoder. YouTube’s equipment and encoder guide describes these kinds of workflows.
A capture card is optional. Consider one if you need to bring an HDMI camera or console into a computer-based production; it does not replace the encoder software. Match a card to the source and the resolution and frame rate you intend to capture, as well as your computer’s available connections and capabilities.

Running a pre-recorded YouTube loop is a different job
OBS, Streamlabs Desktop, vMix, and Wirecast are production encoders for assembling and sending a live program. If instead you want uploaded videos to play continuously on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is the relevant cloud option. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by an assumed quality or performance winner. The available evidence does not establish a benchmark ranking. Match the application to your workflow and test it on your own hardware.
- Underestimating the computer workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, scene complexity, content, and other running programs all matter. Start with current system requirements and check performance with the scenes you will actually use.
- Buying capture hardware before checking the source. First identify the source connection and the resolution and frame rate you need. A capture card only helps bring compatible external video into the computer; it is not required for every stream.
- Assuming a software list is a full comparison. For vMix or Wirecast, confirm current operating-system support, input and output limits, and pricing directly with the vendor before committing.
Copyright and YouTube channel suitability
An encoder sends a live program; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in that program. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies before using third-party material. Likewise, operating an encoder or looping uploaded videos does not by itself establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s rules or qualifies for monetization. Evaluate the content and channel against the current YouTube policies that apply to your use case.
