How to Set Up Streamlabs Desktop: A Beginner’s Guide

Set up Streamlabs Desktop from installation through a tested first broadcast, with clear steps for scenes, capture sources, audio, alerts, and troubleshooting.

To set up Streamlabs Desktop, install the app, connect your streaming account, create one scene, add the game or screen you want to show, check your microphone and other audio, then test before going live. A webcam, separate microphone, overlays, and Streamlabs Ultra are optional for a basic stream.

Before you install Streamlabs Desktop

Check Streamlabs’ system requirements for your operating system and the work you plan to do. Its requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or later and 8 GB of RAM as minimums. More demanding games, animated overlays, and advanced plugins may need stronger hardware. Streamlabs recommends Ethernet and says upload speeds of 3.6 Mbps or better are suitable for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms; that is guidance, not a guarantee for every platform or broadcast.

Use the current requirements page for storage guidance rather than treating one number as universal: Streamlabs’ getting-started material and requirements guidance do not give the same storage figure. Also check the streaming platform’s own current eligibility and broadcast requirements.

Install and complete first-run setup

  1. Download the installer from Streamlabs. Run it and follow the installation prompts.
  2. Allow device access when prompted. Grant camera and microphone permissions if you intend to use those devices. You can also configure them later.
  3. Choose live streaming and sign in. Connect the platform account you plan to broadcast to, following the sign-in flow shown in the app.
  4. Import or start fresh. If you already have settings in another streaming program, choose the import option if offered; otherwise start with a clean setup. A fresh setup is easier to troubleshoot when you are new.
  5. Select your devices and overlay preference. Choose the intended microphone and camera if you have them. Select an overlay or skip it; neither an overlay nor a paid plan is required to make a basic scene.

Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide describes onboarding choices, including free and Ultra options. Labels and availability can change, so follow the current app screens.

Create one scene and add the picture

A scene is a layout for a moment in your broadcast; its sources are the individual things shown or heard within it. Start with one scene named something recognizable, such as “Live.” You can add separate scenes later for “Starting Soon,” “Be Right Back,” or “Ending Soon.”

  1. In the Scenes area, create a scene and give it a clear name.
  2. In Sources, add the source that matches what you want viewers to see:
  • Game Capture for a game, where available and appropriate for that game.
  • Screen Capture when you want to show your desktop or another screen.
  • Video Capture Device for a webcam or other camera device.

Arrange and resize sources in the preview so the important content is visible. You do not need to add a camera if the stream is gameplay, a presentation, or another format that works without one. The official Streamlabs quick-start instructions cover creating scenes and adding sources.

Choose your microphone and audio

During onboarding, select the microphone you actually want the stream to use. If you skip that step or need to change it, open the audio settings and choose the intended microphone and desktop-audio devices. A built-in laptop microphone or headset is enough to begin; an external microphone is optional.

  • Speak at your normal streaming volume and watch the microphone meter respond.
  • Play the game or media you plan to share and check that desktop audio registers at a usable level.
  • Listen to a short test recording or private test broadcast. A meter moving does not confirm that the recorded mix sounds balanced or that the correct device is selected.

If you add a webcam later, use the Sources area to add it as a Video Capture Device, then confirm the correct camera is selected and visible in the preview. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide describes device selection and adding an external microphone or camera.

  3. Test any alert or widget you added.
  4. Confirm the destination account and stream information in Streamlabs before starting the broadcast.
  5. When the preview and audio are correct, start the stream from Streamlabs and verify on the platform that the broadcast is arriving as expected.

A short private test is useful even if onboarding completed without errors: it can catch a black capture source, muted desktop sound, the wrong microphone, or a layout problem before viewers see it.

Do you need Streamlabs Ultra?

No for the basic setup above. Streamlabs’ quick-start material offers a free option; its getting-started guide describes multistreaming to supported integrated services and RTMP destinations as an Ultra feature. Those plan features can change, so check Streamlabs’ current product information before paying for a feature. If you only need to send one stream to one connected platform, the beginner workflow does not require multistreaming.

Common setup problems and fixes

  • The preview is black or shows the wrong content: Check that the correct scene is selected and that its source matches the content you intend to show—Game Capture for a game or Screen Capture for a screen. Confirm that the chosen source is configured for the right target.
  • The microphone meter does not move: Re-select the intended microphone in audio settings, check the operating system’s microphone permission, and make sure the device is connected and not muted.
  • Viewers cannot hear the game or desktop: Check the selected desktop-audio device and verify the meter while the game or media is playing. Make a test recording to confirm the mix.
  • The camera is missing: Confirm camera permission, select the correct device, and add or configure it as a Video Capture Device source.
  • An alert does not appear during the test: Check account linking, the Alert Box source in the active scene, and its alert settings, then run the test function again.
  • The stream is unstable: Compare your upload connection with the platform’s current recommendations. Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guidance applies to 720p at 30 fps for most platforms, not every resolution, frame rate, or network condition; Ethernet is its recommended connection type.
