How to Fix Dropped Frames With Dynamic Bitrate in OBS

OBS dynamic bitrate can keep a stream going through congestion by lowering bitrate. Learn how to enable it, diagnose dropped frames, and choose YouTube settings.

In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS will lower the outgoing bitrate when your connection cannot keep up, which can help avoid dropped frames and keep a stream running—but the picture may lose quality. This is a fallback for congestion, not a repair for the underlying network problem.

What “Dropped frames” means—and what it does not

OBS uses “Dropped frames” for frames lost because the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says the encoder drops frames to compensate, and too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. It considers OBS itself an extremely unlikely cause of these network-related drops. OBS: Dropped Frames

Do not confuse stream-side dropped frames with viewer buffering. A viewer can experience buffering because of their device or internet connection even when your OBS connection is not dropping frames. OBS treats viewer buffering as a separate playback and reach issue; changing dynamic bitrate alone may not address it. OBS: Stream Buffering

Enable dynamic bitrate in OBS

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
  2. Turn on Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).
  3. Apply the change, then monitor OBS statistics while streaming. If congestion causes bitrate reductions, expect lower image quality during those periods.

OBS describes the feature as lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. It also cautions that the setting does not solve the root cause and recommends it only if you cannot resolve the underlying connection issue. OBS Project troubleshooting guide, 2024-09-30

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Diagnose the cause before relying on the fallback

1. Check the ingest server and streaming service

Try a different ingest server in OBS. If a test stream works better through another streaming service, that can help identify a service-specific route or ingest issue; it does not repair the route to your original service. Return to your intended destination after the test. OBS: Dropped Frames

2. Lower the baseline bitrate to a stable level

Set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, not just a peak speed from a speed test. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; leave headroom for normal variation and other devices using the connection. Also stay within the platform’s limits. If dynamic bitrate has to reduce your rate continually, lowering the starting rate or fixing the connection is preferable to depending on the fallback. OBS: Dropped Frames

3. Check the connection settings and software

  • On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing; some users may benefit.
  • Leave Bind to IP at Default.
  • Try IP version: IPv4 Only only as a diagnostic. If it makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Check whether a VPN, security software, bundled network-prioritization or optimization utility, or outdated network driver is interfering. Obtain driver updates from your PC or motherboard manufacturer.

These are troubleshooting tests, not settings that improve every connection. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether it affects the drops. OBS: Dropped Frames

4. Check Wi-Fi, cables, and network equipment

OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends trying a wired connection. Restart the modem and router. A cable, network card, router, or other device can also be faulty; ask your ISP for guidance before replacing equipment if you are unsure. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option if you need a cable for a wired connection or suspect your current cable is damaged, but replacing a cable cannot fix every cause of dropped frames.

5. Contact your ISP if the route remains unstable

If the checks above do not resolve the issue, give your ISP details about when it happens, your destination, and any tests you have made. The problem may involve changes on the ISP’s end or congestion along the route. YouTube also recommends checking outbound internet and contacting the ISP when that test indicates a connection problem. OBS: Dropped Frames · YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors

These are YouTube recommendations, not universal targets or a guarantee that your connection can sustain the rate. YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS encoder bitrate mode. Test before going live and narrow down the fault

  1. Before the event, run a test using audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. A static screen or silent test may not reveal the same problems as the real content.
  2. Monitor stream health and review any messages during the test and live event.
  3. If the stream looks or sounds bad in the encoder, check source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local recording.
  4. If it looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, investigate the outbound internet connection, ingest server, and route to the platform.

YouTube specifically recommends tests that include representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube: Recommended encoder settings · YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors

Common dropped-frame problems and fixes

What you observe Likely area to check What to try
Drops continue at the same bitrate, or the stream disconnects Upload headroom, ingest server, or network route Lower the baseline bitrate, test another ingest server, and check the connection path.
Drops lessen when dynamic bitrate is enabled, but the image becomes less clear Congestion is forcing bitrate reductions Accept the temporary quality trade-off while investigating a stable upload rate or route.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS does not show network drops Viewer playback conditions or delivery Check platform stream health and consider output settings or platform transcoding; the viewer’s device and connection can also matter.
The stream looks or sounds wrong in OBS’s encoder output Source, encoder, CPU, or local recording Check source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive before focusing on the ISP.
The encoder output is healthy, but the delivered stream is not Outbound internet or route to ingest Test the network path, try another ingest server, and contact the ISP if the issue persists.
