To change what viewers see, customize your broadcast’s scenes and sources in OBS Studio or install an overlay and widget theme in Streamlabs. An OBS “Theme” changes OBS’s own interface—not the livestream graphics.
First, choose what you mean by “theme”
Streaming software uses “theme” for more than one thing. In OBS Studio, it means the appearance of the software interface. Viewer-facing graphics are built from scenes and sources. Streamlabs distinguishes overlays—the layouts and graphics on screen—from widget themes that style elements such as alerts and chat.
- Change how your streaming software looks: choose an OBS interface theme.
- Change what viewers see: arrange scenes and sources in OBS, or install an overlay and widget theme in Streamlabs.
Customize the viewer-facing stream in OBS Studio
OBS gives you direct control over the broadcast layout: scenes contain sources, and transitions determine how you move between scenes. Its features are described at OBS Project.
- Create or select a scene. Use a scene for each distinct part of the broadcast, such as an opening screen, main program, or break.
- Add and arrange sources. Depending on your setup, sources can include a camera, image, text, browser window, or capture card. Position and layer the elements to make the intended content visible.
- Set scene transitions. Choose how the broadcast moves from one scene to another.
- Preview before switching live. Studio Mode lets you preview scene and source changes before putting them on air.
For a documentary-style stream, for example, you might use a title card for the opening, a program scene with the video and any on-screen identification, and a separate break scene. Add only the elements the audience needs; a theme does not require filling every available space with graphics.

Change OBS Studio’s interface theme
If you meant the look of OBS itself, open Settings > General > Theme and choose a built-in or installed theme. The OBS Themes Guide identifies Yami as the default beginning with OBS Studio 28. This changes the application interface, not the scenes or graphics viewers see. See the OBS Themes Guide for the documented setting.
Install and customize a Streamlabs overlay or widget theme
Streamlabs offers ready-made graphic layouts and styled widget sets. Its library describes designs for horizontal and vertical formats, so choose one that matches your broadcast’s orientation and the content you want visible. Current availability and compatibility can change; check the Streamlabs library before selecting an asset.

- BUILT-IN 4.5-INCH MULTIVIEW DISPLAY: Monitor all four HDMI inputs, Program, Preview, resolution status, and audio levels directly on the integrated screen. The compact all-in-one design reduces the need for a separate production monitor.
- 4-CHANNEL HDMI SWITCHING: Connect and switch between up to four HDMI video sources with 30 adjustable transition effects, including Mix and DIP. Landscape and portrait production modes support traditional broadcasts and vertical social media content.
- PTZ CONTROL AND PRODUCTION TOOLS: Control up to four compatible PTZ cameras through VISCA over IP, with four position presets available for each camera. Chroma key, luma key, PIP, DSK, and logo overlay tools help create polished live productions.
- USB 3.0 UVC LIVE STREAMING: Send uncompressed HD video to a computer through the USB 3.0 UVC connection for use with OBS and other UVC-compatible streaming or conferencing software. No separate USB capture card is required.
- FLEXIBLE VIDEO AND AUDIO WORKFLOW: Assign the AUX HDMI output to IN1–IN4, PGM, Clean PGM, PVW, Clean PVW, PAT, or Multi View for recording and monitoring. Two 3.5 mm audio inputs and a headphone output support external audio sources and real-time monitoring.
- Choose a suitable overlay. Browse or filter by keyword or color, and look for matching widgets if you want a coordinated set.
- Select and install the design. The library’s documented flow uses Select and Install. A bundle may include starting, BRB, ending, live-scene, webcam-frame, label, alert, event-list, chat, or goal elements; use only the pieces that fit your show.
- Customize the widgets. Adjust them through the Streamlabs dashboard. In integrated software, add the relevant items as sources; in other streaming software, use the provided browser-source URLs as directed by Streamlabs.
- Check the active scene collection in Streamlabs Desktop. Widget themes can be associated with scene collections. If the wrong styling appears, check that the selected collection is associated with the theme you intended.
If you want alerts and chat styled separately, Streamlabs documents combining widget links as browser sources or creating a custom theme. That gives you more control, but requires managing the pieces individually.
Which approach should you use?
| Need | OBS Studio | Streamlabs |
|---|---|---|
| Change the streaming application’s appearance | Choose an interface theme under Settings > General > Theme. | The materials cited here describe overlays and widget themes, not an equivalent application-theme setting. |
| Build viewer-facing graphics | Compose scenes from sources and control transitions. | Install an overlay and, if useful, a matched widget theme. |
| Control and customize individual elements | Arrange scene sources directly. | Customize widgets in the dashboard; use browser sources or integrated sources as appropriate. |
| Pick a screen orientation | Arrange scenes for the output you are making. | Choose a library design matching the horizontal or vertical format. |
| Understand free and paid access | The cited OBS materials describe scenes, sources, interface themes, and extensibility; they do not establish a comparable overlay-library price. | Streamlabs says basic features are free and optional Ultra includes premium overlays; its library says many themes are free and full-library access is part of Ultra. Check current terms before subscribing. |
Use OBS’s scene-and-source workflow when you want to build the layout yourself. A library bundle is a convenient starting point when you prefer prebuilt graphics and coordinated widgets. In either case, confirm that the assets work with your streaming software and destination. Streamlabs describes its alert themes as supporting Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook, Patreon, Tiltify, and some Streamlabs services; check its current compatibility details before relying on a specific integration. Its “New to Streamlabs? Start Here” page describes Streamlabs Desktop as software for streaming from a computer to services including Twitch, YouTube Live, and Facebook Gaming.

Make the design readable and appropriate to the program
- Keep the program primary. Place frames, labels, and alerts so they do not obscure the documentary, presentation, or other main content.
- Match the format. A layout designed for a horizontal broadcast may not suit a vertical one; choose assets for the actual output orientation.
- Use only relevant bundle elements. A stream does not need every included goal, event list, chat box, or webcam frame.
- Preview scene changes. In OBS, use Studio Mode to check changes before putting them live.
- Verify styling in the selected collection. In Streamlabs Desktop, the widget theme association can affect which styling appears.
A theme can make a broadcast more coherent, but the sources cited here do not establish that themes increase viewership, retention, or revenue. Treat the design as a presentation choice, not a guaranteed growth tactic.
