For a practical starting point, use Twitch’s examples: 6,000 kbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 4,500 kbps for either 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps, and 3,000 kbps for 720p at 30 fps. Set the encoder to CBR with a two-second keyframe interval, then test your stream. These are Twitch’s published examples, not a guarantee that the highest setting will suit your connection or computer.
Twitch bitrate settings by resolution and frame rate
Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines give these common video configurations. The page does not state a publication year in the reviewed material.

These are Twitch’s example settings, not a universal best bitrate or assurance that a particular connection will sustain them. Twitch advises prioritizing stability: “Remember: it’s always better to have a stable stream than to push for a higher video quality that might cause you to drop frames or test the limits of your internet connection.”
How to choose a bitrate your setup can sustain
Start with upload capacity, not the download number
Streaming sends video from your computer to Twitch, so the relevant connection figure is upload speed. OBS notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its connection troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing connection problems; treat that as an OBS troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a universal safe limit. Your route to the Twitch ingest server, other devices using the connection, and upload variation can affect whether a bitrate is stable.

Leave headroom instead of setting the encoder right at a speed-test result. If the stream drops frames or bitrate fluctuates, reduce the video bitrate and test again. OBS recommends trying another Twitch server and reviewing network software that could interfere with OBS. Balance resolution, frame rate, and encoder load
Higher resolution needs more bitrate to preserve detail, while a higher frame rate takes more encoding power. A 1080p60 stream therefore asks more of both connection and encoder than a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate option. If the computer struggles to encode or the connection cannot reliably send the target bitrate, lower one or both settings rather than pushing through dropped frames.

Choose based on the content as well as the available capacity: fast motion can benefit from a higher frame rate, while a stable 720p stream may serve viewers better than an unstable 1080p stream. Twitch’s examples provide reference points for 720p and 1080p. The reviewed guidance does not establish official Twitch bitrate recommendations for 480p, 900p, 936p, or 1440p, so avoid treating interpolated numbers for those formats as platform-endorsed settings.
Encoder, video, and audio settings
Rate control and keyframes
Use CBR (constant bitrate) and a two-second keyframe interval as the baseline shown in Twitch’s examples. Set these in your streaming software’s output or encoder settings; exact menu names vary by software and version. After applying them, run a test stream and check the actual output rather than assuming the configured values guarantee a stable feed.

x264 and hardware encoding
Twitch’s guidelines discuss both x264 and NVENC. For x264, Twitch advises starting at the veryfast preset and experimenting within the computer’s capacity; x264 uses CPU resources and encoding can tax the system. Hardware encoders can shift encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware, and OBS generally recommends them for performance, but support and capabilities vary by device and platform. For example, OBS says Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon, while Intel Mac streaming through VideoToolbox is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services.
Audio bitrate
Keep audio bitrate separate from the video bitrate in the table. Twitch identifies AAC-LC at 96 kbps as its recommended audio setting for maximum compatibility and 160 kbps as the maximum AAC audio bitrate in its guidelines.

Where to enter settings in OBS
OBS labels and available encoder options can vary by version and hardware. In general, open Settings → Output, choose the streaming output mode and encoder, then set the video bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. In Settings → Video, select the output resolution and frame rate. Check the audio bitrate in the audio or output settings for your chosen mode. Apply changes, start a test stream, and confirm stability before using the configuration for a scheduled broadcast.

- Run a test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Watch for dropped frames, disconnects, or a bitrate that swings below its target.
- Check Twitch Inspector. Twitch’s Guide to Using Twitch Inspector explains its diagnostics, including stream bitrate, resolution, and encoder information. Use it to compare what is being sent with what you intended to configure.
- If the connection is unstable, lower the video bitrate. Retest before raising it. OBS’s 75% upload suggestion is a troubleshooting starting point, not a substitute for testing the actual connection to Twitch ingest.
- If instability continues, try another Twitch server and check network software. OBS recommends both steps; Windows users can also consider TwitchTest quality results when selecting a server.
- If encoding performance is the issue, reduce the encoding burden. Consider a lower resolution or frame rate, or a suitable hardware encoder if your system supports one.
What about Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting?
Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting with Multiple Encodes documentation describes automatic stream configuration that can create multiple renditions with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. Its example configuration ranges from a 6 Mbps 1080p AVC rendition to a 200 Kbps 160p AVC rendition, and it recommends 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720 at 60 fps for best performance in the described configuration. This is feature-specific guidance: check whether it is available in your current account and broadcaster software before relying on it.
