An RTMP server receives a live stream sent by an encoder such as OBS. It can then make the stream available to viewers, forward it to another destination, record it, or convert it to another protocol. To test one locally, run a server that listens for RTMP and point OBS at its address and stream path. A small Docker example is useful for a proof of concept, but it is not a secure or capacity-tested public deployment.
What an RTMP server does
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a typical live-stream workflow, an encoder captures or plays media and publishes it to a server. The server accepts that incoming stream—often called ingest—and may route, relay, record, or convert it for another destination.
That makes the server a receiving and routing component, not necessarily the service that delivers video to every viewer. A server can accept RTMP ingest while using a different protocol for playback. MediaMTX, for example, documents publishing, reading, proxying, recording, playback, and protocol conversion as server capabilities.
Ingest is not the same as viewer delivery
RTMP is commonly useful between an encoder and a media server or platform. Viewer delivery is a separate design decision: consider the viewers’ devices and network, any CDN involved, the latency you need, and whether the incoming stream must be transcoded or repackaged. SRS describes HLS as broadly supported but with several seconds of latency, and WebRTC, HTTP-FLV, and HTTP-TS as possible lower-latency delivery choices. Those are the SRS project’s qualitative descriptions, not universal benchmark results.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
What you need before setting one up
- A computer or host on which the media server can run. For remote publishers, it must be reachable over the network.
- An RTMP server implementation. MediaMTX documents a range of protocol and routing features; SRS provides a concise Docker-based RTMP example.
- An encoder or publisher, such as OBS, configured with the server address and the path or key the server expects.
- A plan for access: decide who may publish, who may read, whether streams will be forwarded, and which network ports need to be reachable.
The sample below is a local starting point based on SRS LTS v6 documentation. It is not a production hardening guide or a performance comparison with other servers.
Start a minimal RTMP server with Docker
-
Run the SRS example
With Docker installed, run the documented command in a terminal:
docker run --rm -it -p 1935:1935 ossrs/srs:5 ./objs/srs -c conf/rtmp.confThis publishes container port 1935 on the host and starts SRS with its RTMP configuration. Keep the terminal open while testing; the container is running in the foreground and uses
--rm, so it is removed when it exits.Rank #2

Publish a test stream
The SRS example uses the URL
rtmp://localhost/live/livestreamfor an FFmpeg publisher. Here,rtmp://is the protocol scheme, localhostis the host, and/live/livestreamis the application/path portion used by that example. A server may instead require a separate stream key or use a different path arrangement.Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Recommended: PC Feels Slow? Check local versus remote addressing
localhostmeans the machine running the publisher, not the server in every situation. It works when publisher and server are on the same machine. A publisher on another machine needs the server’s reachable host address and a network/firewall configuration that permits the connection. The Docker example alone does not make a server safely or reliably available on the public internet.
Connect OBS to the server
-
Open OBS stream settings
In OBS, open Settings, then Stream. Select the custom service option so you can enter the server address rather than choosing a platform preset.

Enter the address and path
For the documented MediaMTX local example, enter
rtmp://localhost/mystreamas the server address and leave the separate stream-key field empty. In that example, the stream is available at/mystream. This arrangement is specific to the example; another server may expect an application path and a distinct key. -
Start streaming and verify reception
Start the server first, then click Start Streaming in OBS. Confirm that the server reports or exposes the incoming stream using the method provided by that server. If OBS cannot connect, check that its server URL and path match the server configuration, that the server is running, and that the address is reachable from the OBS machine.

When RTMPS matters
RTMPS is the encrypted form of an RTMP connection. YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP; use it when the receiving service and your encoder/server configuration support it and you want the connection encrypted in transit. RTMPS protects the connection, but it does not by itself decide who is authorized to publish or watch.
MediaMTX’s OBS guidance gives rtmps://localhost:1936/mystream as an example and says encryption must be enabled in the server configuration. For that documented OBS arrangement, the server needs a publicly trusted TLS certificate. OBS may silently reject a self-signed certificate unless you configure and validate a locally trusted certificate authority on the OBS computer. Exact configuration options can vary by software version, so check the current server and OBS documentation before exposing an encrypted endpoint.
Plan public access and delivery separately
Control publishing and reading
Before making a server reachable outside your local machine, decide which clients may publish and which viewers may read. MediaMTX documents internal, HTTP, and JWT authentication options, as well as stream forwarding. Choose controls that fit your deployment; the local Docker command above does not establish a particular firewall policy, authentication setup, or production security posture.

Choose a delivery protocol for the audience
Compare options against actual needs: encoder compatibility for ingest, viewer and CDN support for playback, acceptable end-to-end latency, the need for transcoding or repackaging, and the complexity of exposing the server. SRS characterizes RTMP as a contribution protocol, HLS as widely supported with several seconds of latency, and WebRTC/HTTP-FLV/HTTP-TS as potential lower-latency routes. Media server capabilities differ, and the cited project documentation does not provide a fair performance benchmark between products.
Common setup problems and fixes
- OBS cannot connect: Confirm the server is running, the host and port are correct, and the path/key format matches that server’s configuration. For remote publishing, verify network reachability rather than using
localhostfrom the remote machine. - The server starts but receives no stream: Start publishing from OBS or another encoder, then inspect the server’s logs or stream status. A listening server does not create a stream until a publisher connects.
- OBS reports an RTMPS certificate problem or silently fails: Check that encryption is enabled server-side, the certificate is valid for the host being used, and the client trusts its certificate authority. The MediaMTX guidance warns that OBS does not accept a self-signed certificate in its documented configuration without local trust setup.
- The stream works locally but not from another network: Replace
localhostwith the server’s reachable address and review host/network access rules. The example command maps port 1935, but it does not configure a safe public deployment. - Viewers cannot play the stream even though ingest works: Check whether the server offers a viewer-facing output and whether the chosen playback protocol is supported by those viewers. Successful RTMP ingest alone does not guarantee that every viewer can consume RTMP directly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than operate an RTMP server, StreamNeo is a different, managed approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture or a general-purpose RTMP server. Start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an RTMP server create or record video by itself?
No. A publisher must send it a stream; recording is an additional server capability that must be supported and configured.
Can viewers always watch an RTMP stream directly?
No. The server may need to provide or convert the ingest into a playback protocol compatible with the audience.
