If a stream alert is missing, first test it in your alert provider’s dashboard. If the test does not appear in your stream preview, troubleshoot the widget source, visibility, and audio in your streaming software. If the test works but a real follow, subscription, or donation does not trigger an alert, check the provider’s event settings, linked account, and moderation filters.
Understand where stream alerts come from
OBS Studio hosts an alert overlay but does not generate alerts itself: OBS says it does not directly provide stream alerts. An alert provider supplies the widget; streaming software displays it, and its audio must be routed into the stream mix. That means a failure can be on the provider side, in the source or scene, or in audio routing.
The setup path depends on the software: Streamlabs Desktop has an Alert Box source; the Streamlabs plugin for OBS has its own source path; and other streaming applications typically display a provider’s widget URL in a Browser Source. Streamlabs’ quick setup guide describes these options.
Start with a provider test
- Open your alert provider’s dashboard and use its test function for the alert type you want to check. Save any provider-side changes before leaving the settings page.
- Check the source in your streaming software. In Streamlabs Desktop, confirm the Alert Box source is present. In OBS or another application, confirm the provider’s widget URL is set up as a Browser Source.
- Test in the scene you plan to use. Make sure the source is enabled, visible, and not covered by another source. Confirm that you are looking at the intended scene and preview.
- Compare the result. If the provider test is missing, follow the visual and audio checks below. If it works but a real event does not, skip to the event-configuration checks.
This split prevents a common misdiagnosis: a working test does not prove that real events are enabled or that the provider is receiving them.

If the alert does not appear on screen
Check visibility and source order
- Confirm the alert source is enabled and visible in the active scene.
- Move it above sources that might cover it in the scene’s layer order.
- Check that the source belongs to the scene you are testing; a correctly configured widget in another scene will not appear here.
Refresh the browser widget
If the source appears stale or stops updating, remove and re-add the widget source. For a Browser Source, verify that its URL is the current one from the alert provider. If you use custom HTML or CSS, temporarily check the widget without custom code: custom changes can affect how it renders. Streamlabs includes source recreation and custom-code checks in its alert and widget troubleshooting guide.
Test browser hardware acceleration
Browser rendering can be affected by the streaming application’s hardware-acceleration setting. Try toggling browser hardware acceleration in the application’s advanced settings, then restart the application and test again. Change only this setting for the test so you can tell whether it made a difference; the setting’s location and label can vary by application and version.

If the alert appears but has no sound
Seeing an animation does not confirm that its audio reaches your stream. Check the source’s mute state, the application’s audio routing, and which recording or streaming tracks carry the alert.
- Check the alert provider’s recent events or alert controls for a muted state. Unmute the alert if needed, then send another test.
- Inspect the streaming software’s audio mixer while a test alert plays. Confirm the alert source is not muted and that its level registers.
- Check audio routing and monitoring. In OBS, review Settings > Audio > Advanced for the monitoring device and inspect the alert source’s audio settings. Choose monitoring based on whether you want to hear the alert locally and which device you use; do not assume local monitoring is required for the audience to hear it.
- Confirm track assignment. Make sure the alert audio is routed to the audio track or tracks included in your stream or recording. A test recording or stream mix can reveal whether the alert is audible to viewers even when you cannot hear it locally.
- If using Streamlabs’ alert source with OBS, check whether Route Audio to OBS is enabled where that option is available.
Send another provider test after each routing change. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide covers mute state, monitoring, track assignment, and routing options.

If tests work but real events do not trigger alerts
- Confirm the event type is enabled. Check the provider’s settings for the specific event—such as a subscription or follow—and confirm it is configured for the correct platform and account.
- Verify the linked account. If the provider connection may have expired or points to a different account, reconnect it and test again.
- Review moderation delay and filters. Check profanity and custom-word filters. Streamlabs notes that an unlimited moderation delay can require an alert to be manually accepted before it plays.
- Account for privacy limitations. Streamlabs says some subscribers’ privacy settings can prevent an alert from appearing because of API limitations. In that case, the missing alert may not be fixable through a scene or audio setting.
When investigating an absent real event, compare the provider’s event history with what appears in the streaming software. This helps distinguish an event the provider did not process from one that processed but failed to display. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide explains the relevant account, event, moderation, and filter checks.
If an alert repeats or echoes
- Close extra alert pop-out windows. More than one running alert window can play the same event repeatedly.
- Check Browser Sources across scenes. In OBS, open each relevant Browser Source’s properties and enable Shutdown when not active so sources in inactive scenes do not continue running.
- Recreate the source if the echo persists. Remove and re-add the alert source, then test again.
These are the steps in Streamlabs’ alert echo guide.

When basic checks do not solve it
After isolating the provider, source, and audio path, Streamlabs lists cache clearing, firewall or antivirus permissions, IPv6 issues, and an incorrect system date or time as further troubleshooting checks. Treat these as later possibilities, not the first settings to change. Follow the current instructions from your software or network provider for cache and system changes; avoid guessing at firewall or IPv6 settings.
- If only one widget is broken, focus on that provider’s settings and source URL.
- If all browser-based widgets fail, investigate browser-source behavior and application or network conditions.
- If the alert is visible and its audio meter moves but the audience cannot hear it, inspect track assignment and verify the actual stream mix or a test recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your documentary channel also needs a prerecorded YouTube stream to stay live around the clock, that is separate from troubleshooting alert widgets. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists as a YouTube live stream from the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. No computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
