Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best dynamic microphone for streaming depends first on how you want to connect it. Choose USB for a direct computer setup, XLR if you already have—or want to add—an audio interface or mixer, and a dual-output model if you want both routes. The seven microphones below have different pickup patterns, documented specifications and included accessories; manufacturer specs do not establish a universal sound-quality winner.
How to choose a dynamic streaming microphone
Start with the connection
- USB: Connects directly to a computer without an XLR interface. The Audio-Technica AT2040USB is a USB-C model; RØDE’s PodMic USB offers USB and XLR outputs.
- XLR: Requires an XLR cable and an audio interface or mixer to connect to a computer. The Shure MV7X, Shure SM7B, Elgato Wave DX and RØDE PodMic are XLR models.
- Dual output: Provides a choice of USB or XLR connection. Shure’s MV7 has Micro-B USB and a passive XLR output; RØDE’s PodMic USB also supports both.
Match the details to your setup
- Pickup pattern: The models here are cardioid or hypercardioid. These are manufacturer-stated patterns, not proof of a particular noise-rejection result in your room.
- Controls and monitoring: The AT2040USB documents headphone monitoring, mix control and low-cut control. Check product documentation for any features you specifically need.
- Mounting and protection: Verify whether the box includes a cable, clamp, thread adapter or windscreen, and whether your stand or boom arm fits. These accessories differ by model.
- Signal specifications: Sensitivity and output-level figures can help describe a microphone, but the measurements below are not a shared test. Do not use unlike figures as a direct sound-quality ranking.
Best dynamic microphones for streaming
| Microphone | Connection and pattern | Documented specifications and setup details | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RØDE PodMic USB | USB and XLR; dynamic cardioid, end address | 20 Hz–20 kHz; 460 Ω XLR output impedance; sensitivity −57 dB re 1 V/Pa. RØDE positions it for streaming, gaming, podcasting, voice-overs and other speech content. | A flexible choice if you want to start with USB or connect by XLR. |
| Shure MV7 | Micro-B USB and passive XLR; dynamic cardioid | Shure’s guide documents USB computer connection and XLR mixer or stage-box connection. Some stands may require an adapter, which Shure says is not provided. | A dual-connection option for close-mic applications. |
| Shure MV7X | XLR; dynamic cardioid | 50 Hz–16 kHz; 252 Ω at 1 kHz; sensitivity −55 dBV/Pa. Includes a windscreen; Shure lists replacement grille and windscreen parts. | An XLR option for close-mic speech when an interface or mixer is part of your setup. |
| Shure SM7B | XLR; dynamic cardioid | 50 Hz–20 kHz; 150 Ω; output level −59.0 dB (1.12 mV) at 1 kHz. | An XLR model to consider when its documented output-level specification is relevant to your equipment planning. |
| Elgato Wave DX | XLR; dynamic cardioid | 50–15,000 Hz; sensitivity 2.5 mV/Pa (−52 dBV/Pa); 600 Ω. Includes 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch thread adapters with its 5/8-inch mount. XLR cable, interface and stand or boom are not included; Elgato names Wave XLR products as compatible interfaces. | An XLR streaming setup where you can supply the required cable, interface and mounting hardware. |
| RØDE PodMic | XLR; dynamic cardioid | 50 Hz–15 kHz; 320 Ω; sensitivity −57 dBV (1.4 mV @ 94 dB SPL). RØDE says it has a built-in pop filter and does not need an added windshield. | An XLR choice with built-in pop protection, provided you have the interface and cable. |
| Audio-Technica AT2040USB | USB-C; dynamic hypercardioid | Includes a USB cable and mounting clamp. Documents headphone monitoring, mix control and low-cut control. | A direct USB setup with onboard monitoring and controls. |

What USB and XLR require
USB setup
Connect a USB microphone to the computer with its compatible cable, then select it as the input device in your operating system and streaming or recording software. USB models in this comparison include the AT2040USB, PodMic USB and MV7. Check the chosen model’s connector and documentation: the MV7 uses Micro-B USB, while the AT2040USB uses USB-C.
XLR setup
For an XLR microphone, connect the mic to an audio interface or mixer using a compatible XLR cable, then connect that device to the computer. Select the interface or mixer as the input in your streaming software. Wave DX, PodMic, MV7X and SM7B use XLR; RØDE says a computer setup for the PodMic needs a standard 3-pin XLR cable and audio interface.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The sources do not establish whether a particular interface provides enough gain for every voice and use case, or whether any model requires a booster. Check the microphone and interface documentation for your specific combination rather than assuming an extra preamp is required.
Positioning, accessories and room sound
- Position the microphone so you can speak comfortably toward its intended pickup area; the PodMic USB is end-address. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the model you choose.
- Use a compatible stand or boom arm, and check thread sizes and any required adapters. Wave DX includes adapters for 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch threads with its 5/8-inch mount. Shure says some MV7 stands need an adapter that is not supplied.
- Do not buy extra pop protection automatically. RØDE says the PodMic has a built-in pop filter and needs no added windshield. The MV7X documentation specifies an included windscreen.
- A dynamic transducer does not make room noise disappear. The cited manufacturers identify cardioid or hypercardioid patterns, but those labels alone do not establish how much unwanted sound a mic will reject in your room.
Which one should you choose?
- You want both a direct computer connection and an XLR path: Compare the RØDE PodMic USB and Shure MV7. Their connection details differ, so check the connector you need and the maker’s current documentation.
- You want a USB microphone with built-in monitoring and controls: The AT2040USB documents headphone monitoring, mix control and low-cut control.
- You already own an interface or mixer: The PodMic, MV7X, SM7B and Wave DX are XLR options. Check cable, mounting and accessory requirements before purchasing.
- You need a complete cost comparison: Include the microphone and any required interface, XLR cable, stand or boom arm, and adapter. Current prices and availability vary and are not established in this comparison.
Common setup problems
The computer does not show the microphone
For USB, check that the cable and port match the microphone’s connector, then select the microphone as the computer’s input. For XLR, select the connected interface or mixer, not the passive microphone itself; verify that the XLR cable is connected at both ends.

The XLR microphone has no signal
Confirm the mic is connected to an interface or mixer, the interface is connected to the computer, and the correct input is selected in your software. Check the interface’s input level and its documentation for any model-specific requirements.
The microphone does not fit the stand
Check the mount thread and included adapters. Wave DX includes 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch adapters with its 5/8-inch mount; Shure says some stands require an adapter for the MV7 and that one is not included.

The recording has plosives or unwanted room sound
Adjust your speaking position and microphone placement, and use the included windscreen or pop protection where supplied. A dynamic label or pickup-pattern name alone does not guarantee that plosives or room noise will be eliminated.
