VP9 Codec: What It Is and How It Affects Live Streaming

VP9 can reduce the bitrate needed for a given video quality, but live results depend on encoder speed, ingest protocol, latency needs, and viewer-device support.

VP9 is a video codec: it compresses video so it can be transmitted using less data for a given visual quality. For live streaming, that can mean lower bandwidth needs or better quality at the same bitrate—but only if the encoder can keep up in real time, the platform accepts the codec over the chosen ingest route, and viewers’ devices can play it. On YouTube, Google lists VP9 for DASH ingestion, a route better suited to higher resolutions than ultra-low-latency streaming.

What VP9 is—and what it is not

Google describes VP9 as a next-generation video compression format developed by the WebM Project, for web and mobile use cases ranging from lower-bitrate video to ultra-high-definition content. VP9 also supports 10-bit and 12-bit encoding and HDR.

Three terms are easy to mix up:

  • Codec: the method used to compress and decompress video. VP9 and H.264 are codecs.
  • Container: the format that packages audio and video tracks. WebM is a common container for VP9.
  • Protocol: the method used to send media to a platform or deliver it to viewers. RTMP, RTMPS, DASH, and HLS are protocols.

A VP9 file is not automatically a VP9 live stream: the encoder, container, ingest protocol, platform, and player all have to fit together.

What VP9 changes for live streaming

Potentially less bitrate for similar quality

Google says VP9 can reduce video bitrates “by as much as 50% compared with other known codecs.” That is Google’s broad maximum claim; it is not a guaranteed saving for every source, encoder, quality target, or streaming service. Google’s protocol guidance describes the practical tradeoff: a more efficient codec can deliver higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate, which may reduce buffering when bandwidth is constrained.

Efficiency is not the same as a guaranteed improvement in a live broadcast. The actual result depends on the content and encoding choices, as well as the route the platform accepts and the playback devices viewers use.

Real-time encoding matters

A live encoder has to compress each frame quickly enough to keep pace with the incoming video. Google’s VP9 settings guidance emphasizes real-time performance and threading. It describes constant bitrate (CBR) as typical for live encoding and advises avoiding lookahead with alternate-reference frames where that would add latency.

How VP9 affects YouTube ingest and latency

YouTube’s protocol comparison lists VP9 support for DASH ingest, while its RTMP and RTMPS entries list H.264. The distinction matters: choosing VP9 does not itself determine latency; the ingest protocol and platform’s processing also play a role.

  • DASH: YouTube describes DASH as better suited to 4K because it supports VP9, but not suitable for ultra-low latency. YouTube transcodes and re-chunks incoming DASH media; output segment duration depends on whether the stream is optimized for streaming quality or latency.
  • RTMP and RTMPS: YouTube lists H.264 for these ingest paths. RTMPS adds encryption to RTMP. The protocol guide describes RTMP-based ingest as lower-latency than segment-based DASH or HLS.
  • HLS: YouTube’s comparison says HLS can support advanced codecs, but its VP9 entry is associated with DASH. HLS and DASH are segment-based and typically incur more latency than RTMP.

In short, VP9 can be useful when the platform’s supported route fits the broadcast. If very low delay is the priority, YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS path uses H.264 rather than VP9. Check YouTube’s current ingest requirements before configuring a live encoder, since platform support can change.

VP9, H.264, and AV1: how to choose

Consideration VP9 H.264 AV1
Compression efficiency MDN describes VP9 as more efficient than H.264. Less efficient than VP9 and AV1 in MDN’s comparison. MDN describes AV1 as more efficient than both VP9 and H.264.
Encoding burden Live encoding must keep pace with the video; Google emphasizes real-time performance and threading. Specific comparative encoding-cost figures are not stated in the cited guidance. MDN notes that AV1 is more computationally intensive to encode.
Playback support Broad modern-browser support when paired with WebM, but support varies by software, operating system, and container. A pragmatic choice for broad compatibility, according to MDN. Support depends on the viewer’s hardware and playback software.
YouTube ingest route in the cited comparison DASH. RTMP and RTMPS. Specific ingest details are not stated in the cited comparison.
Common container fit WebM is the standard pairing in MDN’s guide; VP9 in MP4 has only partial support depending on playback software. Not stated in the cited codec guide. Not stated in the cited codec guide.

These comparisons describe general tendencies, not a promise that one codec will look better or use less bandwidth for every video. A practical choice depends on the tradeoff that matters most:

  • Choose VP9 when the platform supports the required ingest route, bandwidth efficiency or higher resolution matters, the encoder has enough capacity, and the intended audience can decode it.
  • Choose H.264 when broad device compatibility or a lower-latency YouTube RTMP/RTMPS workflow takes priority.
  • Consider AV1 when its potential efficiency is valuable and the extra encoding burden and audience hardware support are acceptable.

Check playback compatibility before you commit

VP9 in WebM is widely supported across modern browsers, according to MDN, but that does not mean every player, operating system, container, or device can decode every VP9 stream. MDN describes VP9 in MP4 as only partially supported depending on playback software and notes a lack of native playback support on macOS and iOS in the software context covered by its guide. Android’s supported-formats documentation lists VP9 and WebM support.

Running a prerecorded YouTube stream continuously

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, that is a different problem from selecting a codec for a camera-based live encode. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to a YouTube channel: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, without re-encoding; it does not go live from a camera or stream to other platforms. See StreamNeo for the service details.

StreamNeo’s monthly option is $9.99 per month. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.

Before going live

  • Confirm that the platform accepts your codec over the ingest protocol you plan to use.
  • Check whether your encoder can maintain real-time output at the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • Test playback on the browsers, devices, and operating systems your viewers are likely to use.
  • For YouTube, check its current live streaming requirements and make sure your video and audio are rights-cleared. A codec does not change copyright obligations or the platform’s rules for reused content.
