Start the encoder, confirm its feed appears in Live Control Room, and use YouTube’s on-screen controls to begin the broadcast. Check channel eligibility before setting up: first-time live-stream access can take up to 24 hours to activate.
Before you connect: confirm your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete this check well before a scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview and encoder setup guidance.
Connect the encoder to your YouTube stream
1. Create or choose a stream in Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the one you plan to use.
- Confirm the stream’s title, privacy, and schedule. Reusing a previous stream can carry over its metadata, settings, and stream key.

2. Copy the stream URL and key
In the encoder’s streaming settings, choose its YouTube destination or preset if available. If it asks for a server or URL, copy the stream URL shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room. Copy that same stream’s key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. The key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed; it must match the selected stream.

Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or recordings. If it may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. Editors and viewers cannot reset it. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
3. Choose a connection method

RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Live Control Room may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS URL and confirm that it begins with rtmps. Your encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS connection instructions use port 443 in an SSL troubleshooting example; follow the encoder’s requirements if it asks for a port.

4. Start the encoder and verify the preview
- Start streaming from the encoder.
- Wait for the incoming video and audio to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check picture, sound, and the stream’s accessibility before the event.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. An immediate-live stream may start its watch page when the encoder begins sending content; follow the controls shown for your stream.
- To finish, stop sending from the encoder and select End Stream when that control appears in the scheduled workflow.

Preflight checks for a reliable broadcast
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total bitrate being sent. Measure upload capacity, not just download speed; account for both primary and backup streams if using a backup encoder. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Allow time to test. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that time to inspect Live Control Room’s preview and correct audio or video problems. YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- Check viewer access. Confirm privacy and scheduling settings, then test the channel or watch page from a mobile device as well. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
Troubleshoot connection problems
No incoming preview
- Confirm the encoder is using the URL for the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- Check that the key belongs to that same stream and has not been reset.
- If using RTMPS, verify the URL begins with
rtmpsand the encoder supports it.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout
Check the complete URL and protocol first. If the encoder requires an explicit port, check its RTMPS settings; YouTube’s troubleshooting example uses port 443. For a timeout, verify the URL and encoder compatibility with RTMPS. YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting.

Unstable stream or poor quality
Check outbound upload stability and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bitrate headroom. If sending a backup stream, include its bitrate in the total bandwidth estimate. Allow time before the event to inspect the incoming preview and adjust the encoder or network as needed. YouTube stream troubleshooting.
Viewers cannot find the stream
Recheck the stream’s privacy, schedule, channel page, and watch-page accessibility. Test the viewing path from a phone as well as the device used to operate the encoder.

The key may have leaked
A channel owner or manager should reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement. Do not continue using a credential that may be exposed. YouTube stream-key guidance.
