What Causes Buffering During Live Streams—and How to Fix It

Buffering can start at the broadcaster, platform, viewer network, or playback device. Use dropped frames and simple network and device comparisons to find the likely cause.

Live-stream buffering can come from the broadcaster’s upload connection or encoder, the streaming platform, the viewer’s network, or the playback device. Start by checking whether other streams, devices, or networks work: that quickly helps locate which part of the path is failing. Broadcasters should check stream-health messages and dropped frames before changing settings; viewers should test another stream and, if needed, another network or device.

First, work out where the buffering starts

A live stream travels from the broadcaster’s encoder over an upload connection to a platform, which processes and delivers it to viewers. Buffering can begin at any point along that route, or when a viewer’s device cannot play the delivered video smoothly. The pattern of the problem is often more useful than a single speed test.

  • One channel buffers, but other streams play: the broadcaster’s connection or configuration may be involved, though a channel-specific delivery issue is also possible.
  • Several streams or services buffer: investigate the viewer’s network, home setup, or device.
  • Only one device has trouble on the same network: check that device’s playback, decoding, or display path.
  • Audio continues while video stutters: the playback device may be struggling; do not assume the internet connection is necessarily the cause.
  • The broadcaster sees rising dropped frames: investigate the connection between the encoder and the platform’s ingest server.

These clues narrow the search; none alone proves a cause. Platform processing or delivery limits can also affect a stream even when the broadcaster’s upload and a viewer’s local connection appear sound.

Fix buffering as a viewer

Change one thing at a time and compare the result. That makes it easier to distinguish a stream-specific problem from a network or device problem.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Refresh the page or restart the player or app. Then try another live stream. If only one channel buffers, note that before changing your home network equipment.
  2. Try another network or device. For example, compare home internet with cellular data, or test a second device on the same network. If another network works, focus on the original connection or home setup. If another device works on the same network, focus on the first device’s playback path.
  3. On Twitch, try Auto quality. When a connection varies, a manually selected high-quality option such as 1080p60 may buffer if the connection cannot sustain it. Auto can adjust playback quality to the available connection.
  4. If Wi-Fi may be involved, restart the router and test Ethernet. A wired test helps determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing. It cannot fix a broadcaster-side fault, ISP congestion, a platform issue, or an underpowered playback device.
  5. If a YouTube stream is using lower latency, consider the latency trade-off. Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, so inconsistent delivery can interrupt playback more readily. A viewer may have limited control over the stream’s latency setting.

Do not treat a single speed-test result as proof that a connection is stable. A live stream needs sustained delivery, and conditions can vary during playback.

Fix buffering as a broadcaster

Check the stream’s health before reducing quality. The useful distinction is whether frames are being lost while sending the stream, or whether the encoder is struggling to render or encode it locally.

Check dropped frames and stream health

  • Read the destination platform’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s dropped-frame counter.
  • In OBS, rising dropped frames point to an unstable or insufficient connection between the computer and the remote ingest server. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue on that path.
  • If viewers report buffering but the broadcaster has no corresponding dropped frames, the cause may be on the viewer’s network or device, or in platform delivery. Ask whether the issue affects one viewer, one device, or many viewers before changing the broadcast.

Match bitrate and video settings to sustained capacity

Choose a bitrate, resolution, and frame rate that the upload connection can sustain and that the intended audience can receive. If the connection cannot keep up, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate rather than relying on a peak speed-test result. Check the destination platform’s current encoder recommendations and limits; they can change, and settings appropriate for one platform or event may not suit another.

Twitch Help advises that upload speed should be the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Treat that as general practice, not a guarantee of stability under load: other network use and changing connection conditions still matter.

Cloudflare’s troubleshooting page mentions speeds below 20 Mbps in the context of its Upload-to-Duration Ratio troubleshooting. That is not a universal bandwidth requirement for every live-stream viewer or broadcaster.

Test the actual event conditions

YouTube recommends testing before the event with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the event. A static test may not reveal problems that appear during fast motion or a more demanding encode. YouTube also transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so viewers do not all receive the same playback rendition.

Separate connection trouble from encoding trouble

Dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point toward the connection to the ingest server. If that transmission is stable but local rendering or encoding is struggling, treat it as a separate performance problem: simplify the encoder workload and consult the encoder’s performance guidance. Reducing bitrate alone may not resolve a local rendering bottleneck.

Why lower latency can make buffering more likely

Latency is the delay between the broadcaster and the viewer. Reducing it makes interaction more immediate, but gives the player less time to build a read-ahead buffer. YouTube Help puts the trade-off directly: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” If continuity matters more than the shortest possible delay, a less aggressive latency choice may be more suitable where the platform offers one.
