For a YouTube multistream, choose an encoder bitrate that matches your outgoing codec, resolution and frame rate, then add the target bitrates for every destination. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and upload capacity of 1.5–2 times the combined target bitrate. Test with representative motion and audio before going live, then monitor stream health.
Choose settings for the YouTube feed you send
Bitrate recommendations below are for live ingestion—not video uploads. Select the row for the codec, resolution and frame rate your encoder will actually send to YouTube. The figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication or revision year. They are targets, not guarantees of stability or picture quality.
| Incoming resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube also publishes minimums: for the listed modes they range from 0.3 Mbps at 360p30 to 10 Mbps at 2160p60 for AV1/H.265, and from 0.4 Mbps at 360p30 to 14 Mbps at 2160p60 for H.264. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the exact minimum on a specific row, particularly if operating close to the available capacity.
Match the frame rate to the material
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Use 60 fps when the content and encoder justify it; otherwise, 30 fps can reduce the bitrate target. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires a higher recommended bitrate. Your incoming settings are the ones that matter for this table.

Use CBR and set keyframes
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval/frequency: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- For SDR, YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
- For HDR, the guidance specifies H.265 and 10-bit; it does not support AV1 for HDR in that guidance.
Encoder names for these controls vary. If your software exposes keyframe interval in frames rather than seconds, set it to the equivalent of two seconds at your chosen frame rate.
Set audio and choose a delivery protocol
Audio
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its live guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo; 5.1 surround is supported only through AAC, with a 384 Kbps recommendation. Check that the audio track is present and at the intended channel layout before the event.

Just press it again and it will stop recording. Easy to preview and download the recorded videos by accessing the encoder.
RTMPS for the usual workflow; HLS for specific needs
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. In the ordinary YouTube Live workflow, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. HLS is a separate option for workflows that require it, but it has higher latency because it delivers segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. HLS disables ultra-low-latency mode and has additional configuration requirements.
- HLS segment format: TS.
- Segment duration: 1–4 seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT and do not use byte ranges.
See YouTube’s encoder settings and protocol requirements before configuring an HLS encoder.

Calculate upload capacity for all destinations
For simulstreaming directly to multiple platforms, list each destination’s target bitrate and add them. YouTube’s example totals 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, or 10 Mbps combined; it recommends upload capacity of 15–20 Mbps, equivalent to 1.5–2 times the combined target. Use the upper end when the connection is shared or variable. This is planning guidance, not a stability guarantee.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate and codec for each outgoing stream.
- Use the relevant platform’s live bitrate guidance to set a target for each destination.
- Add all destination targets to get the combined upload demand.
- Multiply the sum by 1.5 and 2 to establish the planning range for upload capacity.
- Test the actual setup on the connection you will use, including other devices that may share it.
If you send one encoded feed to a relay or service that distributes it onward, your local upload demand is not necessarily the sum of separate direct outputs; the service’s ingest and output requirements determine the architecture. YouTube’s cited guidance explains the combined-bitrate calculation for simulstreams, but does not rank relay services or establish a universal architecture.

Configure and test before the event
- In your encoder, select YouTube Live and RTMPS when available. Copy the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings; treat it as a secret, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Unless you have a specific reason to fix the mode, let YouTube detect the encoder’s resolution and frame rate. YouTube says it detects the incoming settings and transcodes the live stream into formats suited to different devices and network conditions. Use a custom stream key or manual resolution control only when you need explicit control of the stream mode.
- Set the codec-specific bitrate from the table, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the audio format and level appropriate to the program.
- Run a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your workflow. Include movement and audio similar to the actual program, rather than relying only on a static speed test.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health indicators and alerts during the test and event. If the feed reports issues, reduce output demand or resolve the connection/encoder problem before continuing.
YouTube’s guidance specifically recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream-health indicators and alerts. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance and its simulstream bandwidth guidance.
When a multistream loses quality or drops
- Buffering, dropped frames or unstable health: combined targets may exceed reliable upload capacity, or other traffic may be competing for the link. Recalculate the sum, use the 1.5–2 planning range, reduce one or more output bitrates if needed, and test under representative network load.
- Soft or blocky image: check that the encoder’s actual resolution and frame rate match the bitrate row selected. Raising resolution or frame rate without raising bitrate can leave less data per frame; lowering output mode may be preferable when capacity is constrained.
- Keyframe or ingest warnings: verify CBR and set keyframes at two seconds, never longer than four seconds.
- Audio missing or wrong channel layout: confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and that the intended track is enabled; 5.1 requires AAC.
- Unexpectedly high delay on HLS: segmented HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP delivery and disables ultra-low-latency mode. Use RTMPS if the workflow does not require HLS.
- Resolution differs from the intended mode: confirm the encoder output and YouTube’s detected mode. Use a custom stream key and manual resolution setting only if explicit mode control is needed.
Keep a 24/7 YouTube stream running without an always-on home computer
For a documentary channel that needs a prerecorded program or playlist to loop around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a multistream encoder: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, not from a camera, and does not stream to other platforms. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
