AV1 Codec Explained: What Streamers Need to Know

AV1 may improve picture quality at a given bitrate, but platform ingest support, real-time encoding hardware and HDR requirements determine whether it fits your stream.

AV1 can deliver comparable visual quality at a lower bitrate—or better quality at the same bitrate—but the result depends on the content, encoder and settings. For live streaming, three checks come first: whether your platform accepts AV1 ingest, whether your system can encode it in real time, and whether the format fits your stream (YouTube Live, for example, does not support AV1 for HDR).

What AV1 is—and what it is not

AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) is a video codec: software and hardware use it to compress video for transmission and playback. It is not a streaming platform, an encoder application, or a guarantee of a particular bitrate saving. The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec designed for high-quality video compression. Its specification is freely available, and implementers do not need to be members of the alliance.

AOMedia says AV1 is optimized for high-resolution video such as 4K and 8K and supports adaptive streaming and HDR. Those capabilities do not mean every platform accepts AV1 for live ingest, or that every device can encode or decode it. Check each part of the chain separately.

What AV1’s compression efficiency means for a streamer

Compression efficiency is the codec’s practical appeal: at a given bitrate, it may preserve more visual detail than an older codec, or it may deliver similar quality using less bandwidth. The result varies with the footage (fast motion and fine detail can be demanding), encoder implementation, settings, resolution and frame rate. A gain reported in one comparison is not a fixed saving for every stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AOMedia’s AV1 features page displays a “30% better compression” claim and attributes the supporting results to Bitmovin’s multi-codec DASH dataset. Treat that as AOMedia’s summary of a cited test, not as a universal promise or a prediction for your own live broadcast.

Can you stream AV1 to YouTube Live?

Yes. YouTube Help lists AV1 as an accepted video codec for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest. This is a creator-side ingest capability; it does not mean other platforms accept AV1, and viewer playback support is a separate question. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Do not assume another destination does the same.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. For the AV1 and H.265 settings in its current live encoder guidance, YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and lists support up to 60 fps. Use the platform’s current instructions when configuring your encoder; these recommendations are YouTube-specific, not universal settings.

The following are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended ingest bitrates for AV1 and H.265. They are not guarantees of a particular visual result and should not be applied to other platforms.

2160p (4K) at 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps

1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

At 3840Ă—2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns for AV1-encoded streams. YouTube also advises testing before an event and monitoring stream health.

HDR is a meaningful exception

YouTube Live currently does not support AV1 for HDR ingest. Its guidance recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR streaming. If HDR is essential to your production, choose a supported ingest codec rather than selecting AV1 solely for its compression potential.

Does your PC or GPU need to support AV1 encoding?

To send AV1 live, the production system must encode the video in real time. Being able to decode AV1 for playback does not prove that a device can encode it. In OBS, the documented hardware AV1 encoder families include recent AMD Radeon RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40 and Intel Arc GPUs. The exact encoder options depend on the installed hardware and software.

OBS also documents software AV1 encoding through SVT-AV1/libaom-av1, but says real-time compression requires a high-end CPU. Hardware encoding assigns encoding work to a specialized GPU component; hardware generations and quality differ, so the presence of an AV1 encoder does not establish the quality or performance you will get.

Check before buying hardware

  1. Confirm that your destination accepts AV1 as live ingest.
  2. Check your exact GPU model and the AV1 encoder options available in OBS. Do not infer encoding support from AV1 playback or decoding support.
  3. Test a representative scene at your intended resolution and frame rate, including the workload you expect while streaming. Check stream health and whether the system remains responsive.
  4. Consider an upgrade only if your current system cannot encode AV1 at the settings you need and the platform supports it. Available evidence does not establish that a particular GPU is the best value or that every streamer benefits from upgrading.

How to choose between AV1, H.264 and H.265

There is no codec choice that is best for every stream. Compare the options against the requirements that actually constrain your broadcast:

  • Destination support: verify current creator-side ingest support for your platform. YouTube lists AV1 ingest; do not assume that applies to Twitch or another service.
  • Bitrate and picture: compare at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use, with representative footage. Motion, detail, encoder implementation and settings affect the result.
  • Encoding capacity: confirm real-time hardware encoder availability, or whether your CPU can handle software encoding without disrupting production.
  • HDR and format requirements: YouTube Live does not support AV1 for HDR ingest and recommends HEVC for HDR.
  • Viewer delivery: YouTube says it transcodes live ingest to multiple output formats. Verify how your own destination handles delivery instead of assuming equivalent transcoding.

If the platform, hardware or format requirements rule out AV1, use a codec your destination supports and your system can encode reliably. Revisit AV1 when a change in those requirements makes it practical.

AV1 sources to check before going live

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from live AV1 encoding: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection can be off.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
