Add it to the broadcast as a graphic or streaming-software overlay, check that it opens the right destination, and test it on the devices your viewers are likely to use. Keep a spoken or chat-link alternative ready for people watching on the same phone they would need to scan.
Five useful ways to use a QR code on YouTube Live
1. Collect donations or direct viewers to a fundraiser
Link the code to the specific donation form or fundraiser you want viewers to use. Say what the fundraiser supports and what viewers will find after scanning; a code without context can look like an unexplained advertisement. Before the event, open the destination yourself and test the code as it appears in the broadcast.
2. Send viewers to a product or offer page
A product page, shop listing, launch announcement, pre-order, or offer can be the QR destination. If you are demonstrating an item, make clear what the link leads to and whether the offer has conditions or an end date. QR product cards and related sales features are documented by third-party streaming services; they are not a QR feature built into YouTube Studio.
3. Promote an affiliate offer
A QR code can point to an affiliate link when you have a valid link and are allowed to promote that offer. Identify the relationship clearly and follow the affiliate program’s disclosure requirements and applicable platform rules. Program availability, eligibility, and commission terms depend on the program; they are not established by the QR code itself.

4. Invite newsletter signups
Point the code to the newsletter’s signup page and briefly tell viewers what they will receive. The code is simply a route to that page: YouTube does not provide the signup through the QR graphic. Make sure the destination is a working form and that viewers can understand what they are signing up for.
5. Grow a social profile or community
Use a code to open a social profile, website, or community page. Name the destination on screen or aloud so viewers know where the code goes. If the stream is for a documentary or film community, for example, the destination could be the group or page where viewers can continue the discussion.

How to add and test a QR code
YouTube Studio does not generate the QR overlays described here. You can add a QR graphic through your broadcasting software or use a streaming service that offers a QR widget. The exact controls vary by product, so check that provider’s current instructions and plan details before relying on a particular feature.
- Choose and verify the destination. Copy the final URL for the donation form, offer, signup page, profile, or community. Open it on a phone and confirm it leads to the intended page.
- Create the QR code or add it through your streaming tool. A general-purpose graphic can be imported into broadcasting software as a source. Some services instead let you add a QR widget, enter a destination, and optionally customize its label, colors, or branding. These are vendor-specific options, not YouTube Studio settings.
- Place it where it can be seen without obscuring the program. Check the actual broadcast output, not just the editing or studio preview. A logo, label, or product card may help explain the destination when your chosen tool supports it.
- Test the code during a private or otherwise appropriate pre-event check. Scan the displayed code from another device and verify both the scan and the page it opens. Blackbaud’s QR-code guidance specifically recommends testing the code in the livestream.
- Prepare a backup route. Have a short, readable URL or verbal instruction ready. Where YouTube supports clickable chat links for your stream format, post the destination there as well.
Plan for viewers watching on phones and TVs
A viewer cannot easily scan a QR code displayed on the same phone they are using to watch. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes between formats: clickable links in chat are available for horizontal live streams, while they are not available in vertical live feeds. If many viewers will be watching the vertical version in the Shorts feed on mobile, say the destination aloud or provide another route where possible. Check how the stream appears on the devices and in the format you intend to use before making the QR code the only way to act.

TV viewing also matters: YouTube reported that over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. came from connected TVs in 2025, in a blog post dated April 13, 2026. That figure is specific to the U.S. and 2025; it does not establish a guaranteed QR scan rate or an ideal code size. Treat it as a reason to make the destination easy to understand and offer a backup link, not as proof that every TV viewer can scan the screen.

- Can the tool send the destination to live chat, and is that available for your stream format?
- Does the feature depend on a paid plan or a particular streaming mode?
- Do you need custom branding, a label, scan alerts, or product cards?
- Will the QR code also appear in the recording?
StreamYard documents QR widgets that can be added from its studio, customized, and put on stage; its documentation says the feature is available on paid plans and can also appear in recordings. Restream documents QR codes in its Studio workflow, including an option to send a selected product link to live chat. Blackbaud describes adding a QR link as a content source in broadcasting software. These workflows belong to those providers and may change; check their current documentation and plan terms before an event.
