To start live streaming on YouTube, verify your channel, confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Then choose mobile, webcam, an encoder, or a supported console based on what you want to broadcast—and test before your real stream.
Check YouTube’s requirements before you go live
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube’s current general guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. If it is your first time, activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until just before an event.
- Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. If a channel is restricted from live streaming, using another channel to evade that restriction is prohibited and may lead to account termination.
See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and restrictions and its policy on restrictions.
Choose the streaming method that fits your content
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Quick updates or vlogging from a phone or tablet | The cited YouTube mobile instructions require at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. They list Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ as device requirements. Check current eligibility and device guidance before planning, since platform rules can change. |
| Webcam | A simple face-to-camera stream from a computer | Choose your camera and microphone in YouTube; this route does not require live-stream encoding software. YouTube’s cited instructions list Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, multiple cameras, or external audio/video equipment | Use software or standalone encoding hardware. It takes more setup and rehearsal than the webcam route. |
| Console | Broadcasting console gameplay | Supported modern consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions for its exact setup. |
YouTube’s guides explain the available streaming methods, mobile requirements, and console streaming.
Go live from a phone or tablet
Mobile is convenient when you want to broadcast from where you are, but it has additional eligibility and device requirements. Confirm that your channel meets the mobile criteria before relying on this method for an event.

Use an encoder for a more produced stream
An encoder is the better fit when your broadcast needs gameplay capture, screen sharing, overlays, multiple cameras, or external audio/video equipment. The encoder sends your video and sound to YouTube; YouTube’s Live Control Room lets you check the incoming stream before viewers see the broadcast.
- Enable live streaming and open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- In the encoder or console workflow, connect to YouTube using the stream key and server information shown in the Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen.
- Set up your scenes, camera, microphone, and any shared screen or gameplay source. Confirm that the intended audio source is active.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview to show the incoming video and audio.
- Check viewer access and visibility, then start the broadcast from the encoder or Live Control Room as prompted by the workflow.
- Monitor audio and video during the stream. YouTube recommends setting up early and running a test stream before an event.
Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup and testing tips for the current workflow. The exact encoder controls depend on the software or hardware you use.

Test before your first real broadcast
A test stream helps catch preventable problems before your audience arrives. YouTube recommends testing with public or unlisted visibility before an event; choose the setting deliberately, since public content can be seen by viewers.
- Confirm your channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled early enough for any first-time activation delay.
- Check that the correct camera, microphone, gameplay, or shared screen appears in the preview.
- Listen for clear audio and watch for a stable image in the Live Control Room.
- Ask a trusted viewer to confirm they can access the stream if you need to test the viewer experience.

Equipment: start with what you have
YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A built-in webcam and microphone can be enough to begin. Consider a USB webcam if your computer has no usable camera, or an external microphone if you need better control of audio for an encoder-based production; neither is a basic requirement for going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcast live from a camera, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
