Choose only the labels or frames viewers need, size the layout for your OBS canvas and stream output, export with the right transparency format, then arrange and check the layers in OBS Studio.
1. Decide what the graphic needs to do
Start with the stream, not the decoration. A webcam frame, a short name or social handle, or an intermission message may be useful; extra borders and labels can compete with gameplay, a presentation, or the camera view. Keep the main content area open and place graphics where they do not cover important material.
There is no universally established minimum font size, contrast ratio, or maximum screen coverage for an overlay. Judge legibility in the actual composition and at the size viewers will receive, rather than relying on a generic template rule.
2. Design for your OBS canvas and output
Before positioning an overlay, check both resolution settings in OBS Studio. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the working area where sources are fitted; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution used for the stream or recording. If the output is scaled, fine text and thin lines may look different at delivery size, so review the design at that size as well.

- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
There is no single overlay pixel dimension that suits every stream. Build for your composition and canvas, then verify the result in OBS. For webcam frames and bars, match the shape to the feed and layout. Elgato lists 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, and 1:1 as common webcam overlay proportions.
3. Choose an export format that handles transparency
- Static transparent graphic: Export as PNG. Elgato specifies PNG for static overlays that need transparency.
- Animated transparent graphic: Elgato recommends WEBM when the animation needs to reveal video beneath it.
- MP4 export: Canva’s overlay page offers PNG or MP4, but an MP4 option does not by itself establish that the file has an alpha channel. Check the export behavior for your specific workflow before relying on transparency.
For a graphic that does not need transparency, choose an export that suits how you will use it. Whatever format you choose, inspect the exported file before adding it to a live scene.

4. Build and layer the scene in OBS Studio
OBS scenes are made from sources such as images, text, browser pages, and captured video. In the Sources list, items higher in the list appear in front of items below them. You can position, resize, and crop sources in the preview, or adjust source transforms for more precise placement.
- Create or select a scene. Keep the graphic elements for a particular layout together in the scene where you will use them.
- Add the background or main content source. This might be a captured game or a background image, depending on the scene.
- Add the overlay assets. Add image or text sources, and use a browser source when the overlay is web-rendered, such as an alert or chat box.
- Set the stacking order. Place the background or captured content below the elements that should appear in front. Drag sources in the list to correct an unexpected overlap.
- Position and size each layer. Use the preview to place elements; crop or resize a source as needed, then check that the primary content remains visible.
Example: a “Be Right Back” scene
OBS’s official tutorial builds this intermission scene with a background image, a separate image containing transparent text, and a game capture source. The important part is the layer order: adjust the sources so the background, message, and captured content appear as intended. You can adapt the same approach to an intermission card by using a suitable background and keeping the message as a separate layer.

5. Review the composition before going live
- Check that transparent parts reveal the intended video or background rather than an opaque block.
- Confirm that the source order is correct and no label or frame hides important content.
- Review text and line detail at the intended output resolution, especially if OBS is scaling the canvas.
- Use Studio Mode if you want to view the live scene separately from the scene being edited, or make a test recording to inspect the delivered composition.
OBS describes Studio Mode as a way to view the live scene and the scene being edited separately. It can help you prepare a layout without immediately replacing the current live view.
Which graphic and control options fit the job?
| Choice | Useful distinction | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Static or animated | Whether the overlay moves and needs transparency | Use PNG for static transparency; Elgato recommends WEBM for animated transparency. |
| Canvas or output size | Working composition versus delivered stream or recording | Set and review both OBS resolution settings; check scaled details at output size. |
| Image source or browser source | Local fixed asset versus web-rendered overlay or widget | OBS supports both. Browser sources are commonly used for alerts and chat boxes. |
| Design software or hardware control | Creating the asset versus operating a prepared scene | Canva provides an overlay design page. A Stream Deck can select OBS scenes or toggle source visibility, but it is a control device rather than a graphics editor. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from making and arranging graphics: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
