To blur your background on a video call, open your meeting app’s video or background effects and choose Blur. You can usually do this before joining or during the call; the exact menu and availability depend on your app, device, account, and administrator settings. Preview the effect before relying on it: blur softens the room but does not guarantee privacy.
Google Meet: blur before or during a call
Before joining
- Open the meeting and look at your self-view.
- Select the Blur control at the bottom right of the self-view.
- Check the preview, then join when ready.
During a meeting
- Open Video settings.
- Choose Blur background.
Meet also offers slight blur, custom backgrounds, AI-generated backgrounds, and other effects. Which options appear depends on the client, account type, and administrator settings. Google says Meet can select device or cloud processing automatically. Effects may increase battery use or slow a device; turn them off if performance suffers or the battery is low. Zoom: desktop and mobile steps
Desktop app
- Before a meeting: open Settings > Video & effects > Backgrounds, then select Blur.
- During a meeting: select the arrow next to Video, then enable Blur my background.
Android or iOS app
- During the meeting, open More > Settings > Virtual background.
- Select Blur.
Zoom says the desktop blur uses the system requirements for its virtual-background feature without a green screen; mobile devices also have virtual-background requirements. The selected blur may remain the default for later meetings. See Zoom’s blur instructions.
An administrator can enable or disable virtual backgrounds and AI-generated virtual backgrounds. When the generated-background feature is available and permitted, Zoom lets users create a background image from a prompt. These options are account-dependent; see Zoom’s virtual-background administration guidance.

Microsoft Teams: choose standard or portrait blur
Before joining
- Open Effects and avatars.
- Select the dropdown beside Blur.
- Choose Standard blur or Portrait blur.
During a meeting
- Open More actions > Video effects and settings > Video effects.
- Choose a blur option and preview it if useful.
- Select Apply.
Background effects are not available on every device. Microsoft’s current instructions say Linux users and users on optimized VDI cannot use them; Android availability depends on app, operating-system, and GPU requirements. Check Microsoft’s Teams background instructions for supported-device details.
Teams’ Decorate effect is an AI-generated setting, not simply a blur. Microsoft describes its background process this way: “Teams uses AI and your device’s camera to isolate your silhouette from the background around you and apply all the necessary details to transform your background into a new setting.” Read Microsoft’s overview of Teams virtual backgrounds and blur.

Choose blur or a replacement background
- Choose blur when you want a quick, understated effect that reduces detail behind you.
- Choose a replacement or generated background if you want a different setting rather than a softened version of the room. These options may be subject to additional account or administrator controls.
- Use the built-in control first if you only need to blur a meeting background. The documented Meet, Zoom, and Teams workflows use software settings; the cited instructions do not establish that a green screen or other physical purchase is necessary.
There is no single blur setting that works across every account and device. Start with the app’s own effects menu; if the control is missing, check device compatibility, app availability, account restrictions, administrator policy, and any virtual-desktop setup.
Privacy and performance checks
Blur is not a privacy guarantee
Microsoft warns that sensitive information may remain visible after blurring or replacing a background. Inspect your preview and move documents, screens, or other private items out of the camera’s view when necessary. Blur reduces detail; do not treat it as a substitute for removing sensitive material.

Watch for battery or performance impact
Google notes that visual effects can increase battery use or slow a device. If your call becomes choppy or your battery is low, turn off effects and see whether performance improves.
Troubleshooting: when blur is missing or ineffective
- The blur option is absent: Confirm you are using the desktop or mobile app path supported by that platform, then check device requirements and account or administrator settings. Teams specifically excludes Linux and optimized VDI in its current instructions.
- Zoom blur will not enable: Check that the device meets Zoom’s virtual-background requirements. On desktop, the blur feature’s requirements apply to virtual backgrounds without a green screen; mobile has separate requirements.
- Your device slows down or the battery drains: Disable background effects. Google specifically advises turning them off if performance suffers or battery is low.
- Private details remain discernible: Reposition the camera or remove sensitive items from the frame. A blurred or replaced background can still leave information visible.
- The menu labels differ: Follow the equivalent video, background, or effects control for your app and check its current help page; labels and availability can vary by client and configuration.
