Akamai Cloud (Linode) documents core sites in Chennai and Mumbai, which it says are optimized for the India market. AWS Lightsail offers bundled compute, storage and data transfer, but its transfer allowance varies by Region. Choose only after comparing current terms for the exact India region and measuring the VM-to-YouTube stream path.
If you want to avoid operating a server, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Details are below.
What matters most for a 24/7 stream
A cloud VM has to do more than run continuously: it must read the source video, send a steady stream to YouTube, stay within the provider’s transfer terms and recover sensibly after an interruption. For an India-focused channel, compare these factors before choosing:
- Region: where the VM is available and whether its route to YouTube ingest performs well for your setup.
- Matched resources: vCPU, RAM, storage and whether CPU is shared or dedicated. Similar RAM alone does not prove equivalent performance.
- Outbound transfer: the applicable monthly allowance, how YouTube-bound traffic is counted, and any overage consequences.
- Operations: how you supervise the encoder process, collect logs, restart after failure and restore service if the host or network becomes unavailable.
- Cost over time: the actual regional price and billing terms for the same resource profile, not a comparison of unlike plan rows.
The published material cited below does not establish a matched, current India-region price-and-performance comparison between Linode and Lightsail, nor a comparative uptime or route benchmark.

India regions and published plan examples
Akamai says its Chennai and Mumbai core sites are optimized for the India market. For work serving the wider Asia-Pacific region and communicating with Akamai core sites outside India, it recommends Singapore or Sydney. That is provider guidance, not a measured claim about YouTube ingest latency. See Akamai’s data center guidance.
The following figures are examples published on the cited pricing and bundle pages accessed in 2026; they are not a matched performance comparison. Confirm current regional availability and terms before deploying.

Sources: Akamai Asia-Pacific cloud pricing and AWS Lightsail instance bundles. AWS describes Lightsail bundles as including compute, RAM, storage and a data-transfer allowance, with hourly billing up to the monthly maximum. Akamai says core-region instances have metered outbound transfer with a prorated allowance that ranges from 1 TB to 20 TB depending on plan; see Akamai billing guidance. Check the exact plan and region terms rather than assuming the table examples settle your bill.
Estimate transfer for your stream before buying
A continuous stream sends substantial data even when its bitrate seems modest. For planning, a steady 1 Mbps sends about 0.324 TB decimal over 30 days, before protocol overhead. At 5 Mbps, that is about 1.62 TB in 30 days before overhead. These are arithmetic estimates using a 30-day month, not provider-published measurements.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
- Choose the bitrate you intend to send to YouTube.
- Estimate monthly outbound traffic using bitrate × seconds streamed ÷ 8, then convert bits to bytes and account for decimal or binary units as the provider does.
- Add room for protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic from the VM.
- Compare the result with the exact plan’s applicable allowance, then verify how the provider counts transfers to YouTube and what happens if you exceed it.
Do not assume that a plan with a matching headline allowance will have matching overage treatment or regional terms.
Set the encoder for YouTube, then test the actual route
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency and RTMPS when supported. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and desired output; consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for its full, current table and test before relying on the stream.

- Choose the VM region and plan. Confirm that the required instance is available in your intended India region and check current price and outbound-transfer terms.
- Prepare the stream source and encoder. Make sure the VM can read the video file and sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Check host capacity rather than presuming a plan can encode any workload.
- Configure YouTube ingest. Use the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, keep it private, and select RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Apply the recommended CBR and 2-second keyframe interval.
- Measure outbound capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Test outbound throughput and reliability from the VM, and verify the route to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint; physical proximity alone does not establish performance.
- Run a test stream. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm that video, audio and continuity are acceptable before depending on the setup.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom and checking available upload bandwidth. A successful test is useful evidence about your chosen path, but it is not a long-run uptime guarantee.

A 24/7 stream needs an operating plan for a stopped encoder, a reboot or a network interruption. The cited provider material does not benchmark recovery behavior for either service, so design and test your own recovery process.

- Use process supervision or an equivalent restart mechanism for the encoder, and confirm it starts again after a host reboot.
- Keep logs that make it possible to distinguish source-file errors, encoder exits, network failures and YouTube ingest disconnections.
- Decide how you will be notified of a failed stream and who will act on the alert.
- Test a restart and, if your service requirements justify it, a backup or failover procedure before relying on it.
- Check YouTube stream health after reconnecting; do not assume a process restart alone proves that the live stream is healthy.
How to make the choice
Choose Linode when its India footprint and terms fit
Linode is a reasonable candidate if Chennai or Mumbai suits your deployment and the exact plan’s resources, current price and transfer terms work for your bitrate. Akamai’s India-location statement is useful for narrowing the region, but it is not evidence of measured ingest performance. Test the route from the instance you plan to use.
Choose Lightsail when its bundle and operating model fit
Lightsail’s bundle structure can be convenient when you want compute, RAM, storage and transfer allowance presented together, with hourly billing up to a monthly maximum. Because AWS says transfer allowances vary by Region, confirm the bundle details for the precise region before estimating cost.
Do not declare a price winner from these rows
The examples include a Linode 4 GB row and a Lightsail 4 GB Linux row at the same displayed monthly price and transfer amount, but they do not establish equivalent regional availability, CPU behavior, performance or transfer terms. For an India deployment, compare current console or pricing details for the same region and resource profile, and include expected outbound traffic and overage exposure. No comparative latency, throughput or long-run stability test is established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is looping uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a VM and encoder process: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running with your computer off. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera.
