An EC2-hosted YouTube stream can disconnect because the encoder stops, YouTube rejects or loses the ingest, the instance hits a network allowance, or the VPC egress path fails. Start by recording the exact UTC time and error message, then compare encoder logs, YouTube stream health, and AWS network metrics for that moment. Avoid changing settings until you know which layer is failing.
First identify who is experiencing the interruption
Check YouTube Live Control Room, the encoder’s connection status, and reports from viewers. A single viewer reporting trouble is more likely to have a device or network issue; several viewers on one network may share a local connection problem. Reports from viewers on different networks make a problem with the stream or its path more plausible. YouTube recommends distinguishing these patterns before troubleshooting. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.
Write down the time of each interruption in UTC, what the encoder displayed, and any YouTube stream-health message. These timestamps let you compare logs and AWS metrics rather than relying on symptoms remembered after the event.
Check whether the encoder or source is failing
Inspect the encoder and local recording
Update the encoder, inspect its error log and CPU load, and examine a local recording if the encoder is saving one. Poor audio or video in the local recording, missing segments, or high CPU use points first to the source, encoding workload, storage or I/O, or encoder application—not automatically to an AWS route.

Use stream health to choose the next branch
If the encoder view and local recording remain healthy while YouTube reports an unhealthy or broken stream, investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube’s guidance says, “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.
Compare stream bitrate with EC2 outbound capacity
Measure outbound throughput from the EC2 host while the stream is running under representative conditions. Download speed is not a substitute for upload capacity. Add up video and audio bitrate, every output using the same path, and any backup encoder sharing the same constrained connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

If measured outbound capacity is close to the configured total or fluctuates below it, lower the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate for a controlled test. Keep a backup stream in the calculation if it shares the same uplink: a second encoder does not remove a bottleneck both streams depend on.
Verify YouTube encoder settings and stream-key symptoms
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 codec options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not exceeding 4 seconds), and up to 60 frames per second. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps; these are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 route can sustain them. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Replace the stream key only when the evidence points to an invalid key, authentication, or setup problem—especially a startup failure. A fresh key is not a general fix for a stream that starts successfully and then loses outbound connectivity. YouTube treats key/setup troubleshooting separately from unstable connections. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.
Check the EC2 instance’s network limits at the disconnect time
Find the instance type and its network performance
Check the instance type and its documented network performance. An advertised “up to” rate is not necessarily a continuous baseline. Some instance types use network I/O credits to burst above baseline; when credits are exhausted, throughput returns to baseline. AWS says inbound and outbound credits are separate, credit accumulation depends on using less than baseline, and burst performance is best effort. Internet-bound capacity can also differ from instance-to-instance bandwidth. Consult the network specifications for your instance type and AWS’s explanation of network bandwidth. Inspect ENA performance metrics
Compare ENA performance metrics with your recorded timestamps. Relevant counters include bw_out_allowance_exceeded (outbound bandwidth), pps_allowance_exceeded (packets per second), and conntrack_allowance_exceeded (connection tracking). These counters indicate the instance exceeded an AWS network allowance, where packets can queue or be dropped. Configure metric collection where required. A missing or smooth-looking CloudWatch graph does not rule out a brief microburst: short spikes can be missed by coarser sampling. Amazon EC2: Monitor network performance with ENA metrics and Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth.
AWS describes the effect this way: “When the network traffic for an instance exceeds a maximum, AWS shapes the traffic that exceeds the maximum by queueing and then dropping network packets.” Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth.

Trace the VPC egress path and traffic controls
Follow the actual route from the instance subnet to the internet. Depending on the design, internet-bound traffic may pass through an internet gateway, NAT, firewall, or proxy. Review the route table, security-group outbound rules, subnet network ACL egress and return rules, host firewall, and any intermediary device between EC2 and YouTube.
- Security groups are stateful: response traffic for an allowed connection is tracked.
- Network ACLs are stateless: allow the required traffic in both directions, including return traffic.
- Keep rules least-privilege. Do not open broad inbound ports as an untested response to an outbound-stream problem.
If the instance uses an unusual MTU or jumbo frames and evidence suggests stalled or fragmented connections, check path MTU as a lower-priority branch. AWS says an internet gateway forwards packets up to 1500 bytes and recommends a 1500 MTU for internet traffic. Amazon EC2: Network MTU.
Run a controlled test and preserve evidence
- Before a scheduled event, test with representative audio and video and monitor YouTube stream health. YouTube also recommends testing failover. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Start a controlled stream at a known, lower bitrate that the EC2 host can sustain based on measured outbound capacity.
- For each interruption, record the UTC timestamp, encoder error, YouTube health message, CPU load, outbound throughput, and relevant ENA counters.
- Change one factor per test—for example, bitrate or instance type—so you can tell whether the change affected the outcome.
- Keep encoder logs, representative local archive samples, and AWS metrics together with the timestamps. Escalate with this evidence if the fault remains unclear.
Choose a fix that matches the evidence
- Local recording is poor or encoder CPU is high: investigate the source, encoding load, storage/I/O, and encoder application first.
- Configured bitrate approaches or exceeds measured outbound capacity: reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and repeat the test.
- ENA allowance counters rise at disconnect times: compare demand with the instance’s baseline and allowance; test a suitable instance type or reduce network demand.
- Route, ACL, security-group, host firewall, NAT, or proxy review reveals a blocked or interrupted path: correct that specific egress or return-traffic issue without broadening unrelated inbound access.
- Encoder startup fails with a key or authentication error: verify the configured key and setup; reset the key only if the evidence points there.
- Only one viewer or one shared viewer network reports trouble: investigate the viewer-side connection before changing the EC2 stream.
Reducing bitrate or correcting a configuration is usually less disruptive than changing instance family or redesigning egress. A tested backup encoder and path can reduce interruption risk, but a backup that shares the same constrained uplink does not eliminate that bottleneck.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an EC2 encoder troubleshooting fix: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
