To restart a YouTube encoder automatically on a Vultr VPS, run it as a systemd service with a restart policy, enable that service at boot, and configure the encoder to reconnect after network interruptions. These are separate safeguards: systemd can restart an exited process, but it cannot by itself make YouTube accept the feed or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What automatic restart does—and what it does not
A reliable setup has three layers: the encoder sends video to YouTube; the encoder retries its connection if the network drops; and systemd starts the encoder again if its process exits. YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop options can complement those layers. None can recover from every VPS outage, bad credential, unavailable ingestion endpoint, or resource problem.
Vultr documents systemd service mechanics and an OBS streaming-server setup, but its examples are not a tested unit file for every OBS or FFmpeg installation. You must substitute the executable, command-line arguments, user, paths, environment, and working directory that match your own deployment. The OBS guide assumes its described desktop environment and installation.
1. Configure the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the current stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s output settings. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder configuration. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use the stream’s RTMPS address when your encoder supports it. In Live Control Room, retrieve it using the lock icon in the Stream URL field rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP endpoint is interchangeable. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. Endpoint, protocol, port, and encoder TLS support all matter; Google’s guidance specifies port 443 and the server hostname for SNI authentication. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and Google’s RTMPS delivery guide.
- In the YouTube stream settings, review auto-start and auto-stop. They let an encoder-driven stream start or stop under the configured conditions; they do not restart a failed VPS process.
2. Set the encoder’s reconnect behavior
Enable automatic reconnect in the encoder as well as systemd supervision. Vultr’s OBS tutorial shows OBS’s Automatically Reconnect controls, including a retry delay and maximum retries. Its example values are setup advice for that tutorial, not universal settings. Choose retry behavior that fits the stream and observe whether the encoder resumes after a brief interruption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A retry loop will not fix a persistently invalid key, wrong endpoint, unsupported TLS configuration, or sustained network failure. Keep encoder output logs available so you can distinguish a transient disconnect from a configuration error. Vultr’s OBS instructions are at Create a Streaming Server with OBS and Ubuntu.
3. Run the encoder under systemd
Create a unit file for the real encoder command on your VPS. Vultr’s systemd tutorial demonstrates Restart=always, an ExecStart command, reloading systemd after a unit change, and enabling the service. The outline below shows the relevant mechanics; it is not a ready-to-run OBS or FFmpeg command. Fill in the actual values for your installation before starting it.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
User=YOUR_SERVICE_USER
WorkingDirectory=YOUR_WORKING_DIRECTORY
ExecStart=YOUR_ENCODER_COMMAND_AND_ARGUMENTS
Restart=always
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Store credentials carefully: avoid exposing the stream key in world-readable files, public logs, shell history, or shared unit definitions. Use a configuration or environment-file arrangement with permissions appropriate to your service account. The exact secure method depends on how your encoder accepts credentials.

- Save the unit under a service name such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-encoder.service, with the command and paths replaced for your system. - After creating or editing it, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable boot startup and start it now with
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-encoder.service. - Check the result using
sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.service. Inspect recent service output withsudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Restart=always can repeatedly launch a program that immediately fails. If status or logs show a restart loop, correct the executable path, arguments, permissions, missing files, environment, or output configuration before relying on it. Vultr’s systemd guidance is Automate Bash Scripts on Linux Using Cron and Systemd.
4. Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s accepted settings can change, so confirm the current official encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before an important broadcast. The table gives the current guidance summarized here; codec and resolution combinations have different bitrate requirements.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS |
| Listed video codecs | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 |
| Listed audio codecs | AAC or MP3 |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
The bitrate examples apply to the stated H.264 modes only; do not use them as a universal target for other codecs, frame rates, or resolutions. YouTube’s current help page also notes: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension of the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

5. Test recovery before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the service and confirm
systemctl statusreports it running. Then inspect the journal for encoder errors or repeated exits. - In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the preview and that the stream health indicator is acceptable. A service marked active does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
- Test representative video movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing the stream, preview, health, and failover rather than relying on configuration alone; see YouTube live streaming tips and streaming tips and encoder guidance.
- Deliberately stop the encoder process during a controlled test, then confirm systemd starts it again and the feed returns in YouTube. Also test a brief connection interruption to verify the encoder’s own reconnect behavior.
Vultr’s OBS tutorial lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for its example server. These are tutorial-specific figures, not a universal encoder minimum or a current Vultr plan offer. Monitor CPU and dropped frames under your actual workload; the tutorial’s warning about high CPU use is not a universal threshold. See Vultr’s OBS server tutorial.
Common failures and fixes
- The service is active, but YouTube shows no video: Review encoder logs, the stream URL, and the current key; then check Live Control Room preview and stream health. systemd supervises the process, not successful ingestion.
- Authentication or startup fails: Confirm the key is current in Live Control Room. If it was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the replacement key.
- RTMPS SSL error or connection timeout: Verify the exact RTMPS endpoint and protocol, required port, and encoder TLS support. For Google’s RTMPS guidance, port 443 and the endpoint hostname for SNI are relevant.
- The process restarts repeatedly: Use
systemctl statusandjournalctlto find the underlying exit reason. Correct command, path, permission, environment, or persistent output errors instead of treating repeated restarts as recovery. - Dropped frames or resource pressure: Check CPU usage and whether the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate exceed the VPS’s capacity. Reduce the encoding workload or select a suitably resourced configuration; the right capacity depends on the specific encoder and stream.
How to choose an encoder approach
Vultr’s documented route covers OBS on a server configured with a desktop environment. A direct FFmpeg process may suit a command-line workflow, but the available guidance here does not establish a complete FFmpeg command or a measured OBS-versus-FFmpeg winner. Compare the options against your environment rather than assuming either one is inherently more reliable:
- Whether you need a graphical interface or a headless boot environment.
- How the encoder handles reconnects and exposes useful logs.
- CPU and memory demand at your selected resolution and codec.
- Whether systemd can launch the process with the right user, working directory, environment, and permissions.
Likewise, a restart policy should reflect whether exits are expected, how persistent failures are surfaced, and how quickly retries should occur. The cited Vultr guide demonstrates Restart=always; it does not compare policies or establish an ideal retry delay for every stream.

Cost and archive considerations
Do not estimate a universal monthly VPS bandwidth bill from one bitrate. Data use depends on stream duration, video and audio bitrates, protocol overhead, and the current plan’s terms and region. Vultr’s example bandwidth allocation is dated tutorial context, not a current offer. YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the current encoder setup and archive guidance before depending on archive behavior. That archive limit is not a recommendation to run any event for 12 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can systemd restart the stream after the Vultr VPS itself goes offline?
No. systemd can manage a process on a running server; it cannot bring back a VPS that is unavailable.
Does this setup guarantee zero downtime?
No. It improves process and connection recovery, but outages, credentials, ingestion, and resource limits can still interrupt a stream.
