For a 24/7 YouTube stream hosted on a virtual machine, compare alternatives to Hetzner by monthly outbound transfer, sustained public bandwidth, region, compute needs and failure recovery—not by VM price alone. DigitalOcean and OVHcloud offer useful published examples to evaluate; Scaleway and other providers may also suit particular workloads, but verify their current plan terms directly. No provider is established here as a universal winner, and a VM availability target is not a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube output.

Start with the stream workload, not the provider name

A cloud stream can mean two different things. A relay forwards an already encoded video stream to YouTube; a transcoder decodes and re-encodes video in real time. The second workload can need substantially more compute. The available provider information does not establish a universal minimum CPU, RAM or GPU for either design, so size and test the instance against your actual codec, resolution, frame rate and number of outputs.

For either design, the server needs a stable path to YouTube at the stream’s sustained upload rate. For a relay, CPU needs may be modest, but network capacity and monthly transfer can still be decisive. An advertised port speed is a ceiling, not proof of end-to-end throughput to YouTube.

Estimate monthly transfer before comparing plans

For a constant video bitrate, estimate payload as bitrate in bits per second Ă— seconds streamed Ă· 8. At 14 Mbps for 30 days, the arithmetic is about 4.54 TB in decimal units, before protocol overhead, retransmissions, separately counted audio, monitoring traffic or differences in provider metering. This is an estimate, not a measured bill. Providers may use decimal TB/GB or binary TiB/GiB and may meter traffic differently, so leave headroom and confirm what counts as outbound transfer.

YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are encoder recommendations, not evidence that a particular VM can sustain the rate. Use the row for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide, then verify sustained upload capacity for the VM and network path.

Provider options and what the published figures mean

The figures below are provider-published plan details, not independent benchmarks. Prices, plan availability, regions, taxes and transfer terms can change; check the live page and applicable offer before committing.

StreamNeo Managed cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it loops a recording or playlist rather than relaying a live camera feed. Best fit if you do not want to run a VM or encoder yourself. It is a different approach from choosing a Hetzner replacement VM; see the cloud option below.
DigitalOcean Basic Droplets The live pricing page lists a $4/month plan with 500 GiB transfer, 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU, and a $6/month plan with 1,000 GiB transfer, 1 GiB RAM and 1 vCPU. Both transfer allowances are below the rough 30-day payload estimate for a continuous 14 Mbps stream. Confirm overage or added-transfer terms and whether the instance can handle your relay or encoding workload.
OVHcloud VPS-1 The provider page accessed in 2026 displayed a VPS 2027 offer at $4.54/month, 500 Mbps public bandwidth and “unlimited traffic.” The page labels this range 2027, so it should not be presented as a confirmed 2026 offer. Check the offer date, region, applicable usage policy and the distinction between traffic volume and public bandwidth. “Unlimited traffic” does not mean unlimited throughput.
Scaleway Scaleway’s provider-authored alternatives article describes virtual instances, bare metal and container services and presents it as Europe-focused. A suitable current plan’s price, transfer terms and SLA are not established here. Investigate it for European workloads, then verify current instance specifications, egress charges, bandwidth and service terms with Scaleway.
Vultr, Linode/Akamai and hyperscalers DigitalOcean’s provider-authored alternatives guide names these and other cloud providers as candidates; it is a discovery list, not an independent ranking. Comparable current streaming-plan terms are not established here. Compare the exact instance, network, egress, support and managed-service costs. Hyperscalers may offer a broader global footprint, but pricing can involve more components.

DigitalOcean’s two listed Basic plans are useful reference points, not recommendations for an unmetered 24/7 stream: even the 1,000 GiB allowance is well below the approximate decimal 4.54 TB payload at 14 Mbps for 30 days. OVHcloud’s displayed future-dated offer illustrates why traffic allowance and port speed must be evaluated separately.

DigitalOcean’s comparison guide recommends considering total cost, including egress, managed services, geographic reach, scalability, compliance and support. Because it is provider-authored, use it to discover candidates rather than treat its comparisons as neutral rankings. Confirm claims against each provider’s own current plan documentation.

Compare these five things before switching

  • Monthly transfer and overages: Calculate expected outbound data at your actual bitrate and schedule. Confirm whether the advertised figure is a monthly allowance, usage-policy-limited “unlimited” traffic or an unmetered label, and what happens when an allowance is exceeded.
  • Sustained bandwidth: Check the public bandwidth figure as well as transfer volume. A monthly allowance does not tell you the instantaneous rate the server can sustain, and port speed alone does not establish the route’s performance to YouTube.
  • Region and routing: Choose a region that makes sense for the stream source and your operational needs. YouTube delivers the viewer-facing stream, so placing a relay near viewers does not automatically improve YouTube delivery.
  • Compute and encoding: Distinguish pass-through relaying from live transcoding. Confirm the CPU or other compute capacity against your real settings and concurrent outputs rather than buying a GPU or large instance without a workload reason.
  • Full cost and support: Account for storage, IP addresses, backups, snapshots, support, taxes and transfer fees where applicable. A low headline VM price is not the total cost of a continuous stream.

What Hetzner’s availability target does—and does not—cover

Hetzner Online GmbH’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement, accessed in 2026, says it will use “commercially reasonable efforts” to ensure monthly availability of 99.9% for each individual Cloud Server. That is a contractual monthly target with exclusions, not an unconditional promise that a YouTube broadcast will never drop.

The agreement excludes, among other causes, customer-introduced software or configuration failures, scheduled maintenance under its terms, required live migrations, denial-of-service attacks and network interruptions outside Hetzner’s reasonable control. It says scheduled maintenance is to be announced at least 24 hours ahead. If the target is missed, the agreement provides for prorated Cloud Credits tied to the affected instance’s hourly rate; a request must be made within 14 calendar days after the relevant month. Credits are non-refundable and limited to future Hetzner Cloud fees, which may be small compared with the impact of a broadcast interruption. Review the Cloud and vServer Service Agreement for the current wording and terms.

Availability of a VM and continuity of a stream are separate engineering questions. A single server can fail at the application, operating-system, network or destination level. If interruptions matter, plan monitoring, restart behavior, backups and an independently designed failover path; a single-instance availability target does not create redundancy.

Use YouTube’s encoder requirements for the actual stream

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS workflows and recommends RTMPS. Its guide lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for supported workflows, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. It also recommends testing upload bitrate. Match the settings to the relevant resolution, frame rate and codec row in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide; do not treat a single bitrate as suitable for every stream.

YouTube explains that with RTMPS, “Your data will be encrypted all the way into and through Google’s servers, so nobody can intercept your communication with the service.” This is YouTube’s description of the protocol’s protection for the connection to its servers; it does not change the bandwidth or transfer requirements of a continuous stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded documentary footage or a playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own VM and encoder. It is #1 for this managed-streaming use case because it runs always on from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, along with 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Every plan has the same product; only the billing length changes. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, then start the free first day.
