For a documented do-it-yourself YouTube loop setup, Vultr has the clearer starting point: its Broadcaster Marketplace guide walks through using OBS and VLC Video Source to loop files from a server. DigitalOcean offers general-purpose Linux Droplets, but its documentation reviewed here does not provide an equivalent loop-stream guide. That is a difference in documented workflow—not evidence that Vultr is faster or more reliable. No comparative performance test is available.

If your priority is simply keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube without operating a server, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs the loop in the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

What matters when choosing a VPS for a 24/7 YouTube stream

A continuous stream is not just a small website running on a virtual machine. The server must keep the encoder and media source running, sustain the selected upload bitrate, and remain within the provider’s transfer allowance. You also need a restart and recovery plan, a way to protect the YouTube stream key, and rights to use the material you broadcast.

The practical comparison is therefore about workflow documentation, compute and storage fit, outbound transfer, region, support, and billing—not a general claim that one provider produces a better stream.

DigitalOcean vs Vultr at a glance

Factor DigitalOcean Vultr
Loop-stream documentation Documents general-purpose Linux Droplets; the official pages reviewed do not describe a directly equivalent YouTube loop-stream workflow. The Broadcaster Marketplace guide describes deploying a server, using OBS, and looping multiple files with VLC Video Source for a 24/7 stream.
Compute selection Droplet plans specify CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth, with shared and dedicated CPU options. Check the current catalog for the workload and region. The tutorial describes a server workflow, but the official pages reviewed do not establish a current plan matched to DigitalOcean for this use.
Outbound transfer Includes outbound transfer pooled at the team level; additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. See DigitalOcean bandwidth billing. Vultr documentation describes bandwidth as outbound data to the internet. A current matched plan allowance and overage figure were not established in the official pages reviewed.
Billing while powered off Bundled CPU Droplets continue to be billed while powered off; destroy the Droplet to end billing. See DigitalOcean pricing and billing. A comparable stop-versus-destroy billing rule was not established in the official pages reviewed. Check the current billing terms before leaving an instance stopped.
Evidence of performance or reliability advantage No comparative test available. No comparative test available.

Which provider should you choose?

Choose Vultr if you want a documented loop-stream path

Vultr is the easier recommendation for a reader who wants to follow a provider’s tutorial specifically for a 24/7 loop: its Broadcaster Marketplace guide covers OBS, server-side source files, and VLC Video Source for repeating multiple files. A separate Ubuntu guide names OBS and FFmpeg. These are setup guides, not proof that any particular instance size can encode every resolution or frame rate.

Choose DigitalOcean if its current Droplet configuration and billing suit your workload

DigitalOcean’s Droplets are general-purpose Linux virtual machines. Compare the actual CPU, memory, storage, region, included outbound transfer, and overage exposure for the plan you would run continuously. Remember that powering off a bundled CPU Droplet does not stop its billing; destroying it does.

Do not decide from old price comparisons

A DigitalOcean vendor comparison article published figures dated 2025-08-18, including example monthly prices for selected small and larger VM configurations. Those figures are dated examples, not current quotes, and are not a sound basis for today’s choice. The official sources reviewed do not establish a current, directly comparable Vultr plan price and transfer allowance. Check each provider’s live catalog and calculator for your chosen region before committing.

Estimate outbound transfer before selecting a plan

For a steady stream, estimate transfer from the bitrate sent to YouTube, not the size of the source video file. A useful rough calculation for video-only bitrate is:

GB per day ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8

For example, a 10 Mbps stream sends roughly 108 GB per day, or about 3.24 TB over 30 days, before audio, protocol overhead, and unit-conversion differences. Treat this as a planning estimate; calculate using your actual total stream bitrate and the provider’s billing units.

  • Check whether the provider measures outbound transfer, how much is included, and whether the allowance is pooled across projects or accounts.
  • At DigitalOcean, outbound transfer is pooled across the team and additional transfer is $0.01 per GiB; confirm the applicable allowance and billing cycle for your Droplet.
  • For Vultr, check the live plan details for the exact outbound allowance and overage terms. A guide’s example allowance is not a general plan promise.
  • Allow for reconnects, bitrate variation, and other workloads that share the transfer pool. A stream running continuously can exhaust an allowance even when the VM’s CPU is lightly used.

DigitalOcean’s bundled CPU Droplet documentation states a monthly usage cap of 672 hours (28 days) for bundled plans, with per-second billing up to that cap. Its bandwidth documentation gives an example in which a 1,000 GiB allowance accrues at about 0.0004 GiB per second across a billing cycle; that is an explanation of allowance accrual, not a recommended stream plan.

Set up the Vultr loop workflow

Vultr’s guide describes a Marketplace instance workflow, rather than a universal VM specification. Follow the current guide’s deployment screens and instance requirements; do not assume a particular CPU or memory size will suit every source, resolution, or encoding mode.

  1. Deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace application. Choose a region and instance configuration based on the encoder workload and transfer budget you calculated. Review current plan limits before deploying.
  2. Open OBS on the server and provide the media files. The guide’s 24/7 workflow stores the source files on the server so playback does not depend on a home computer staying on.
  3. Configure the video source and loop behavior. For multiple files, the guide uses VLC Video Source to repeat a playlist. Confirm the playlist order, that looping is enabled, and that the files are available after a restart.
  4. Configure YouTube ingest in the encoder. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key for the scheduled or active stream, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; YouTube describes stream keys as like a password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Set the output to match your target format. Select resolution and frame rate first, then choose an encoder codec and bitrate suitable for that format. YouTube’s encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with CBR and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for one specific example, the current guidance returned for H.264 1080p30 is 14 Mbps and H.264 1080p60 is 17 Mbps. Use the matching row in the YouTube encoder settings guidance, rather than applying either example to a different format.
  6. Use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings page for the complete values for your chosen format.
  7. Prefer RTMPS and test before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Start a test broadcast, verify picture and audio in the Live Control Room, and watch stream health for warnings or dropped frames before treating the setup as ready for continuous use.
  8. Plan for restart and recovery. Confirm how the encoder and playlist resume after an instance reboot or process failure. Vultr’s tutorial establishes a way to configure a loop, but does not guarantee that a particular VM size or configuration will recover every failure automatically.

Match encoding to the server and connection

Live encoding consumes CPU or hardware-encoding resources as well as network capacity. A low-motion loop may require less encoding effort than demanding real-time content, but there is no supported minimum instance size to prescribe here. Start with the actual source format and chosen output settings, then test the selected VM under sustained load. Check CPU and memory pressure, dropped frames, and upload stability; reduce output complexity or select a more capable configuration if the encoder cannot hold its settings.

Protect the stream key

The stream URL and key belong in the encoder’s stream settings, not in a public post, screen capture, or shared configuration file. YouTube calls the key similar to a password. If it is disclosed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved value in OBS. The YouTube live stream settings guidance explains stream settings and key management.

Account for YouTube’s archive limit and content policies

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinitely long broadcast will be preserved as one complete archive; check current YouTube rules and make a separate recording and storage plan if retaining the full program matters.

A successful encoder connection does not establish that the video is rights-cleared, compliant with YouTube policy, or eligible for monetization. Use media you own or have permission to broadcast, and follow YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Repetitive or looped content is not automatically monetizable simply because it can be streamed; eligibility depends on YouTube’s current channel and content policies.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm the stream URL and key match the current Live Control Room stream, the encoder is using the intended protocol, and the instance has outbound connectivity. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
  • Stream health shows unstable upload or dropped frames: compare the selected bitrate with sustained server upload capacity and the current encoder recommendations. Check VM resource pressure and competing traffic; test at a lower output setting if necessary.
  • Video freezes or the playlist stops: check that source files remain on the server, the VLC playlist is configured to loop, and the OBS process has not stopped. Verify behavior after a deliberate restart before leaving the stream unattended.
  • Unexpected transfer charges: inspect outbound usage and the provider’s current allowance and billing period. DigitalOcean pools transfer across a team, so other Droplets can consume the same pool; additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB.
  • Charges continue after shutdown: for DigitalOcean bundled CPU Droplets, powered off is not the same as destroyed. Destroy a Droplet when you want to end billing, after preserving any files or configuration you need.
  • The broadcast ends but the archive is incomplete: streams that run 12 hours or longer are not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule for streams under 12 hours. Verify current archive behavior and record separately if needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain a VPS, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer, OBS session, and home connection can be off. StreamNeo plays the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
