You can send an OBS-encoded feed from an Amazon EC2 machine to YouTube Live, but the YouTube ingest and encoder settings are only part of a dependable 24/7 setup. You also need a channel eligible to stream, a secure stream key, a bitrate that fits your chosen video profile, a tested way to keep OBS running, and a separate plan for archiving. YouTube’s requirements are documented; an EC2 instance size, installation procedure, recovery setup, and cost cannot be responsibly specified here without current AWS- and OBS-specific validation.
What this guide can—and cannot—specify
The supported workflow is to make a live event in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its ingest URL and stream key into an encoder such as OBS, configure a suitable video profile, and confirm the feed in YouTube’s control room. EC2 can host the computer running the encoder, but merely launching OBS on a cloud machine does not establish that it will run continuously or recover correctly.
This guide does not prescribe an EC2 instance type, region, operating-system image, installation commands, process supervisor, or monthly AWS price. Those choices depend on current AWS offerings, the operating system and encoding method, and the stream’s resolution and frame rate. Amazon IVS instructions are for a different streaming destination; they are not an EC2-to-YouTube setup guide.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires an eligible, verified channel without live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming.” Check this before building a broadcast schedule; activation is not necessarily immediate.

Set up the YouTube ingest details
- Create or select the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and open its Stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and key. OBS uses these ingest details to send video to YouTube. Use the values shown for your stream in Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old guide or a mutable configuration file.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not include it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s streaming controls before relying on it again.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS connection. Google’s “Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS” says the connection uses port 443 and an
rtmpsscheme. Use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room, including its full server path; do not assume an address copied from another account or guide is current.
Configure OBS and choose a video profile
In OBS, configure the stream service with YouTube’s stream URL and key from the event settings. The exact menu labels and service behavior can vary by OBS version, so verify them in the version you install. Then set output and video options to match the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions” gives recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that suits every stream.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s table for your specific codec, resolution, and frame rate. As one reference point only, the table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. That is not a universal setting or a recommendation for every EC2 encoder.
- Codec and encoding capacity: YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. Which one is usable depends on the encoder and machine. The guidance here does not establish what a particular EC2 instance can encode in real time.
Do not select a high-resolution profile solely because OBS offers it. Confirm the cloud machine can encode it continuously, then test the actual feed in YouTube Live Control Room before scheduling a public broadcast.

Validate the complete path before leaving it unattended
YouTube’s “Streaming tips” recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health, leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and testing encoder failover. Treat those as validation goals for an EC2 deployment, not proof that a particular instance, network path, or restart mechanism is adequate.
- Run an end-to-end test at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room.
- Check that the outgoing connection has headroom beyond the chosen stream bitrate. A connection that only just matches the target may not be reliable under changing conditions.
- Confirm how OBS starts after a machine reboot and what happens if OBS, the machine, or the connection fails. This must be validated for the chosen EC2 image and setup; no generic recovery time or process-supervision method is established here.
- If you use a backup encoder, test switching to it before depending on it. A backup that has never been tested is not a recovery plan.
- Monitor the broadcast and any recording over time, including whether the recording file continues to grow and whether storage is running low.
Plan for archives separately from a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube Help’s “Archive live streams” says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 session will produce a complete YouTube archive. Decide in advance whether you need recordings, test your chosen recording method, monitor available storage, set a retention policy, and verify that saved files can be played back.

Shorter scheduled sessions can fit within YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window, but they require an intentional plan for session boundaries and continuity. Whether that trade-off is right depends on whether a continuous public feed or separate archived programs matter more to your channel.
Protect the content as well as the stream key
Before broadcasting documentaries, music, archival footage, or other recorded material, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream it on YouTube. A cloud server, a long-running playlist, or a successful test does not grant permission to use a recording. Check YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules for the content and rights situation you actually have; this guide does not establish whether any particular film, soundtrack, or excerpt is cleared.

Know what EC2 costs still need to be calculated
There is no reliable monthly EC2 estimate without choosing a region and machine configuration and checking current AWS pricing. A 24/7 deployment also needs an explicit estimate for outbound data transfer and any recording storage you use. Calculate those costs for the actual design before committing to a continuous broadcast; the available YouTube guidance does not establish AWS pricing or an appropriate EC2 size.

YouTube does not accept the stream
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that any initial activation period has passed.
- Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, and that the key has not been changed or exposed.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room and check that the URL uses the secure scheme and the required port 443. Do not substitute an endpoint based only on an old setup guide.
The stream is unstable or has poor health
- Check the encoder’s bitrate and profile against YouTube’s settings guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Verify CBR and the recommended 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Test available outbound bandwidth with headroom, and reduce the stream profile if the selected configuration cannot be sustained.
- Use Live Control Room’s stream-health information to distinguish an ingest problem from a local preview issue.
The broadcast stops after a restart or interruption
Do not assume OBS will relaunch or reconnect automatically on EC2. Confirm the chosen operating system’s startup behavior, the encoder’s restart behavior, and any recovery mechanism in a controlled test. The required EC2-specific steps depend on the deployment and are not established by the YouTube encoder guidance.
