If your encoder or relay is running on your Linode, start it inside a detached tmux session before closing SSH. The process can then continue after your SSH client disconnects. Reconnect later with tmux attach. To start the process after a Linode reboot, configure it as a systemd service enabled at boot. Neither method guarantees uninterrupted delivery to YouTube if the host, network, encoder, or YouTube ingest fails.
First, identify what is running where
SSH is only your remote terminal connection. The actual encoding or relay process must be running on the Linode for a Linode-side session manager to keep it alive. If the encoder is running on your own computer, disconnecting SSH to the Linode does not move that encoder into the cloud or keep it running.
There are three separate layers to consider:
- SSH and shell: the connection from your computer to the Linode.
- Encoder or relay process: the program that sends video and audio toward YouTube.
- YouTube ingest and broadcast: YouTube’s receipt of the feed and the state of the live broadcast.
tmux addresses the first layer: it keeps a terminal session on the server after SSH disconnects. It does not repair a failed encoder, unstable outbound connection, host outage, or YouTube ingest problem. Linode also documents screen for persistent sessions; if your process already runs inside one of these managers, keep using that session rather than starting a competing copy. Linode’s process-persistence guidance and the tmux manual describe the session approach.
Keep the process running after SSH disconnects with tmux
- Connect to the Linode over SSH. Use the account and host details for your instance.
- Start a tmux session: run
tmux. If you already have a suitable session, attach to it instead of creating another one. - Start the encoder or relay inside tmux. Use your existing command or launch method. Confirm that the process is running and that YouTube is receiving the live feed before detaching.
- Detach without stopping the process: press Ctrl+B, release both keys, then press D. You should return to the ordinary shell while the tmux session remains on the Linode.
- Close SSH. The detached server-side session can continue even though your local terminal is gone.
- Check the session later: SSH back in and run
tmux attachto return to it.
If the process is already inside screen or another persistent terminal session, detach using that tool’s own method. Starting the process in an ordinary shell and then closing that shell is not equivalent to detaching a tmux session.

Start the stream after a Linode reboot with systemd
A detached tmux session handles an SSH disconnect, not a server reboot. If the process needs to start when the Linode boots, configure it as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Linode’s process-persistence guidance distinguishes this boot-startup need from keeping a process alive after logout.
The service must launch the correct encoder or relay command with the required files, permissions, environment, and YouTube connection details. Test two things separately: whether the service starts successfully after a reboot, and whether YouTube actually receives media and the broadcast is live. A service showing as started does not prove that YouTube ingest recovered. The appropriate service configuration depends on your program and setup; the cited guidance does not establish a universal unit file or restart policy.

Check the YouTube connection if the process is still alive
A running process can still fail to deliver usable media. YouTube’s documented encoder setup uses the RTMPS stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Confirm that your encoder or relay is using the correct URL and current key. Treat the key as a publishing credential: do not post it publicly or include it in shared logs.
If the feed stops, inspect the encoder or relay logs, outbound network health, bitrate, RTMPS URL, and stream key. OBS notes that rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Linode’s RTMP guide likewise warns that an excessive streaming rate can cause OBS to disconnect from the server. Lowering bitrate may help when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate; first check that the encoder’s settings and the available connection are appropriate for your stream.

Linode’s RTMP server guide covers a separate relay architecture, not a requirement for simply keeping a process attached to a server-side session.
Choose the method by the failure you need to cover

Use tmux for the immediate logout problem; use a boot-enabled service when startup after reboot matters. A relay is a different architecture, not a substitute for understanding whether your encoder is already running on the Linode.

Troubleshooting common failures
The stream stops as soon as SSH closes
The encoder may have been started in the ordinary shell rather than inside tmux or screen, or you may have exited the persistent session instead of detaching. Reconnect and check whether the session exists; start the process inside a persistent session next time and use its detach command.
The process disappears after a Linode reboot
A detached terminal session does not survive a host reboot as a running process. Configure and enable a systemd service for boot startup, then test service startup and YouTube ingest independently.

The process is running, but YouTube shows no incoming video
Check encoder or relay logs, outbound connectivity, the RTMPS URL, and the stream key in Live Control Room. Verify that the correct broadcast is receiving the feed; process status alone does not establish that YouTube is ingesting it.
OBS shows dropped frames or a degraded connection indicator
Investigate connection stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS identifies rising dropped frames with a yellow or red connection indicator as a reason to check those conditions; Linode also warns that excessive streaming rate can disconnect OBS from the server.
You need the stream to recover from failures, not just SSH logout
tmux solves session persistence, and systemd can start a service at boot. Neither alone guarantees recovery from every encoder, host, network, or YouTube failure. Decide which failures your setup must recover from and monitor both the local process and YouTube’s receipt of the feed.
