Move up to an E2-standard-4 or another suitable size only if monitoring shows that CPU, memory, network throughput, or stability needs more headroom. This is an engineering starting point—not a Google-certified recommendation or a tested result.
If the VM must encode, transcode, composite, or send multiple outputs, the workload changes substantially; benchmark a compute-optimized C2D configuration against your specific software and video settings instead. There is no defensible universal VM size or monthly cost without knowing the region, codec, resolution, frame rate, feed count, and downtime tolerance.
Choose the VM based on what it must do
Relay an already encoded stream
A relay forwards encoded data rather than processing each video frame. For one prepared feed, E2-standard-2 is a reasonable first candidate to test. Measure it under the real stream and increase the size only if there is a demonstrated bottleneck. This is an engineering inference from the workload, not a Google recommendation or benchmark result.
Encode, transcode, composite, or send several outputs
Video processing can consume substantial CPU, so a small general-purpose VM that can relay a feed may not be suitable for encoding it. Google identifies media transcoding as a compute-bound C2D workload. Benchmark an appropriate C2D size using the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, software, and number of concurrent outputs. Those details are necessary to choose a size; the machine-family maximums alone are not a sizing recommendation. Google Cloud’s C2D documentation lists standard types from 2 to 112 vCPUs and egress ceilings that vary by size.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
GPU acceleration may suit some video workflows, but whether it helps depends on the encoder software, codec, and supported acceleration path. Without those details, a particular GPU or VM size cannot be recommended.
Estimate outbound bandwidth from the stream bitrate
The VM sends an ingest feed to YouTube; viewers receive playback from YouTube, not from the VM. Therefore, size outbound capacity using the total bitrate sent by the VM, not the channel’s viewer count. Add the bitrates of concurrent feeds or destinations.
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate, including any primary and backup streams. For example, a single H.264 1080p60 feed at YouTube’s recommended 12 Mbps bitrate calls for at least 14.4 Mbps of available upload capacity using that headroom rule. This is a capacity estimate, not a promise of achieved throughput. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Available upload capacity with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | At least 12 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | At least 14.4 Mbps |
| 4K30 | 30 Mbps | At least 36 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 35 Mbps | At least 42 Mbps |
The headroom figures are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s 20% recommendation to the listed bitrates; they are not measured VM results. Check the current codec-specific settings in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Understand the egress limits
Compute Engine publishes maximum egress figures, but they are ceilings, not guaranteed throughput. Google’s current machine-family documentation lists up to 1 Gbps for E2 shared-core e2-micro and e2-small instances, up to 2 Gbps for e2-medium, and up to 4–16 Gbps for E2 high-memory configurations, depending on size. These headline limits do not establish the throughput your stream will achieve.

Google says per-instance egress is usually 2 Gbps per vCPU, with exceptions by family. For traffic outside a VPC, ordinary machine series without Tier_1 networking are generally capped at 7 Gbps total; Tier_1 networking is capped at 25 Gbps externally, and each flow is capped at 3 Gbps. Actual egress can also depend on destination, packet size, flow count, network driver, and congestion. Check the current Compute Engine network-bandwidth documentation for the selected family and networking configuration. A published ceiling should not be treated as a capacity guarantee.
Benchmark the exact workload before settling on a size
- Define the job. Record whether the VM relays an encoded feed or processes video, along with codec, resolution, frame rate, target bitrate, concurrent feeds, and required recovery time.
- Check the region and machine limits. Confirm the selected machine type is available and review its external egress limits and any relevant quotas in the intended region.
- Run the real stream. For a one-feed relay, start with E2-standard-2 as a hypothesis. For encoding or transcoding, benchmark C2D candidates using the same settings and software planned for production.
- Observe sustained operation. Monitor CPU, memory, network throughput, dropped frames, process restarts, and stream health during representative load. A brief test may not reveal problems that emerge during continuous operation.
- Change one constraint at a time. If CPU or memory is saturated, test a larger or better-matched VM. If outbound throughput is the issue, check the external egress ceiling and network conditions rather than assuming more vCPUs alone will fix it.
- Test recovery and failover. Confirm that the encoder or relay process restarts after a failure, alerting reaches someone, and any backup path works before relying on the stream unattended.
Configure the YouTube ingest and protect continuity
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use settings appropriate to the selected codec and the source; do not assume every encoder exposes identical labels.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live, then configure the stream and retrieve its ingest URL and stream key. Labels may change as YouTube updates Studio.
- Configure the encoder or relay. Set the ingest URL and key, use RTMPS where supported for encrypted ingest, and match the chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address. Store it securely; reset it in YouTube Studio if you think it has been exposed.
- Preview and test before depending on it. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, then test process restart and encoder failover. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a configured stream is healthy.
- Plan for the platform’s archive limit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour feed will become one automatically archived video.
For an unattended stream, add operating-system and process supervision, monitoring, alerting, and a documented recovery plan. Those are operational safeguards, not a guarantee that YouTube or a particular VM will provide uninterrupted service.

Budget the complete always-on setup
There is no single defensible monthly total without a region and configuration. Compute Engine VM prices vary by machine type and region; attached Persistent Disk or Hyperdisk is billed separately, and network transfer can affect the total. Compare the VM, storage, and expected networking costs for the actual region using Google Cloud pricing. A redundant backup VM or feed can improve resilience but adds recurring resource costs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are relaying uploaded videos to a YouTube channel and would rather not size and maintain a VM, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
