Keep the broadcast private when you go live. An Unlisted stream is not private: anyone with its link can watch.
What “private” means in a YouTube stream test
YouTube treats the encoder feed and the broadcast viewers watch as separate resources. The stream is the incoming feed from FFmpeg; the broadcast is the audience-facing event. Privacy controls who can access that broadcast, while the API’s testing lifecycle state routes an incoming feed to a special monitor stream intended for the broadcaster.
For ordinary creator workflows, YouTube Help describes selecting privacy in Live Control Room, connecting an encoder, checking the preview, and choosing Go live. The API’s formal monitor-and-testing sequence is documented for API-managed broadcasts; do not assume the Studio interface shows a button with the same name.
- Private: only invited viewers can watch. Treat invitations and account access as part of the privacy boundary.
- Unlisted: anyone who has the link can watch. It is not a substitute for Private.
- Testing: an API broadcast lifecycle state that uses the configured monitor stream; it is not simply another label for a private broadcast.
Test an FFmpeg feed in YouTube Live Control Room
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Set the privacy to Private. YouTube allows stream privacy to be changed among public, private, and unlisted.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream in Live Control Room. Use the endpoint format YouTube displays. Enter the URL and key in FFmpeg’s output destination as required by that endpoint.
- Protect the key: Do not expose the stream key in screenshots, articles, shell-history excerpts, or support requests. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room before reconnecting the encoder.
- Start FFmpeg: Use the input, output, and muxing options appropriate to the source you are testing. FFmpeg’s RTMP examples use
-reto read a file at native rate and show FLV muxing to an RTMP destination. The command shape is schematic; replace the placeholders with your source and YouTube-provided destination details:ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f flv "RTMP_DESTINATION_AND_KEY" - Confirm receipt: Wait for YouTube to detect the encoder feed and display its preview in Live Control Room. Check that the correct source is arriving before starting a viewer-facing broadcast.
- Keep it private: If you choose Go live to test the audience-facing event, leave its privacy set to Private. Only invited viewers should be able to watch. If the goal is only to verify the incoming feed, stop after confirming the preview rather than changing the broadcast to Public.
API-managed broadcasts: monitor stream and testing state
For a broadcast managed through YouTube’s Live Streaming API, the documented test path is more specific than the regular Studio preview workflow:

- HDMI to SRT/RTMP(S)/RTSP Encoder:Convert HDMI video sources into SRT, RTMP, or RTSP streams for real-time online broadcasting and remote production. Stream directly from cameras, gaming consoles, or other HDMI devices to platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, or private streaming servers. Ideal for live events, conferences, sports, education, and professional AV applications, delivering stable, high-quality video with low latency.
- SRT/RTMP(S)/RTSP to HDMI Decoder: Decode SRT, RTMP(S), and RTSP network streams and output them through HDMI to TVs, monitors, switchers, and other video equipment. Easily bring remote cameras, drones, action cameras, or surveillance streams to local HDMI displays for real-time monitoring and playback. Ideal for sports events, press conferences, live production, and multi-display applications, providing stable HD video output and seamless integration with devices such as ATEM switchers.
- HDMI to UVC Encoder: Use an HDMI to UVC converter to connect a professional HDMI camera to your computer for high-quality video calls in meetings. It also allows you to link HDMI devices (e.g., cameras or classroom equipment) to teaching computers or projectors for better interactivity. Enables HDMI cameras or sources to connect to computers or streaming devices for high-quality live broadcasts
- UVC to HDMI Decoder: Convert UVC cameras (e.g., USB webcams, action cameras) to HDMI signals for easy connection to conference equipment or large displays or ATEM switcher, enhancing video quality and participation. In education and training, convert UVC signals to HDMI for display on large screens
- SRT/HDMI Encoder & Decoder:SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) provides secure, low-latency video transmission with enhanced stability over challenging network conditions. ZowieBox enables bidirectional conversion between HDMI and SRT streams, allowing reliable remote production, live streaming, and video contribution workflows with high-quality transmission even across long-distance networks.
- Create or schedule the broadcast and set its privacy status to
private. - Configure the associated stream’s monitor stream as enabled.
- Bind the broadcast to the stream and verify that the bound stream is active.
- Transition the broadcast to
testing. YouTube’s API overview describes the monitor stream as private and accessible only to the broadcaster.
Do not confuse this API lifecycle state with an ordinary privacy setting. Private controls audience access to the broadcast; testing and the monitor stream govern the API test workflow.
Copyright and documentary footage
A private test limits who can watch, but it does not grant rights to footage, music, archival clips, or other material in the video. Before streaming a documentary or work-in-progress, check that you have the rights and permissions needed for the material and review YouTube’s copyright requirements. Keeping a stream private is an access setting, not a copyright clearance.

Troubleshooting a private FFmpeg test
- No preview appears: Confirm FFmpeg is still running, that you copied the stream URL and key for the same broadcast, and that the output format and destination match YouTube’s displayed endpoint. Wait for Live Control Room to detect the incoming feed.
- The stream is visible to more people than intended: Check that the broadcast privacy is Private, not Unlisted or Public. Review who has been invited and who can access those accounts.
- The API test does not enter testing: Check that the monitor stream is enabled, the broadcast is bound to the intended stream, and the bound stream is active before making the testing transition.
- The stream key may have leaked: Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg with the replacement. Do not keep using a key that others may have copied.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running after the test, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the upload, not a live camera feed. The same flat price per slot applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
