Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you need a visual production setup with scenes, sources, widgets, and an audio mixer. Neither tool’s documentation establishes guaranteed 24/7 uptime. If you want prerecorded videos to keep streaming without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
These are different workflows feeding the same YouTube Live destination, not different kinds of YouTube channels. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses its server URL and a stream key; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. YouTube’s encoder workflow and encoder settings apply whichever encoder you choose.
How FFmpeg and Streamlabs differ
FFmpeg is a command-line media framework. Its documentation includes an option for infinitely looping an input and an example of configuring RTMP output to try to recover from temporary network failures. Streamlabs Desktop is a graphical streaming application; its setup guide focuses on arranging scenes and sources, configuring audio and output, and checking the stream before going live.
| Decision | FFmpeg | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Operating style | Command-line inputs, options, encoders, and outputs. | Graphical scenes, sources, widgets, and settings. |
| Prerecorded looping | -stream_loop -1 is documented for infinite input looping. |
The cited quick-start guide covers going live but does not describe a dedicated unattended loop or recovery design. That guide alone does not establish that every possible looping method is unavailable. |
| Network recovery | The FFmpeg formats manual shows an RTMP FIFO output example configured to continue at real-time speed through temporary network failure and attempt recovery. | The cited Streamlabs pages do not document comparable output-recovery semantics. |
| Visual production | Media can be composed through command-line processing; the sources cited here do not cover filter setup. | The guide describes scenes, media sources, alert and chat widgets, and audio controls. |
| Connection to YouTube | Configure the YouTube server URL and stream key in the output workflow. | Connect YouTube or configure a custom RTMP destination supported by the app. |
| Evidence about 24/7 reliability | The documented features do not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee or comparative failure rate. | The cited vendor guidance does not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee or comparative failure rate. |

Which one fits your channel?
Choose FFmpeg for a straightforward prerecorded loop
FFmpeg is the closer fit when the core job is to play one or more media files repeatedly and send the encoded output to YouTube. The loop option and output behavior are explicit command-line settings, so the workflow can be scripted. That control comes with responsibility: you must configure the process, host, network, and recovery and monitoring around it.
Choose Streamlabs for a visual show
Streamlabs is the better-documented fit when the stream needs a scene-based layout or sources such as gameplay and webcam, along with alert or chat widgets and audio controls. Its guide provides a graphical setup path, but the cited documentation does not establish that it is easier for every user or that it will run unattended more reliably.

Neither is a complete uptime plan
With either local workflow, continuity still depends on the computer or host staying available, the input media and encoder behaving correctly, a stable network, and YouTube accepting the stream. Plan monitoring and a way to restart or recover from failures; no comparative long-duration test or uptime guarantee is established by the cited manuals and guides.
Set YouTube output settings before the first long run
YouTube’s encoder guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Match the selected format and bitrate to the encoder and the upload connection, and check the current YouTube encoder settings before going live because platform guidance can change.

H.264 recommended bitrates listed by YouTube
The following are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations; the source page does not state a publication year. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will sustain the stream.
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s broader settings table has different figures for other resolutions and for H.265 or AV1. Audio options listed include AAC and MP3. Test the actual upload connection at the intended settings, allow for network variation, and check stream health rather than treating a bitrate recommendation as proof of stability.

Practical setup and operating checklist
For an FFmpeg loop
- Prepare the video file or playlist you intend to broadcast and confirm it plays correctly before building a long-running process.
- Use FFmpeg’s documented
-stream_loop -1input option when you want an input to loop infinitely. The manual states that-stream_loop 0means no loop and-stream_loop -1means infinite loop. See the FFmpeg command-line manual for the option syntax. - Configure the output for YouTube’s current ingest requirements: server URL, stream key, a supported video and audio format, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Use RTMPS where configured and check YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- If using RTMP output, review the FFmpeg formats manual’s FIFO muxer example for continuing at real-time speed during temporary network failure and attempting recovery. This is an example of output behavior, not a complete monitored service or guarantee that every interruption will recover.
- Run a representative test stream, confirm YouTube receives audio and video and reports acceptable stream health, then arrange monitoring of the FFmpeg process, host, and connection for the actual run.
This comparison does not prescribe a full production command: the right codec, input handling, output options, and recovery policy depend on the media and host. Use the manuals to validate the exact options for your chosen setup rather than pasting an untested generic command into a continuous broadcast.
For Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and follow its quick-start guide to set up scenes, sources, widgets, and audio as needed for the show.
- Connect the YouTube account or configure a supported custom RTMP destination with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private.
- Set output resolution, FPS, bitrate, and encoder in the app, matching YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and the upload connection’s sustainable capacity.
- Use the guide’s pre-stream checks, then make a representative test and monitor YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for a long run.
- Plan how the computer, application, and network will be monitored and restored if one fails. The Streamlabs setup guidance describes configuration, not an unattended 24/7 recovery guarantee.
Host, network, and stream continuity
Streamlabs’ vendor guidance says requirements vary with stream type and concurrent workloads and recommends Ethernet. Its May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives vendor configurations including 8 GB minimum RAM and 16 GB or more recommended; these are Streamlabs Desktop guidelines, not a validated 24/7 hardware bill of materials and not FFmpeg requirements. See Streamlabs system requirements and its quick-start guide.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Use a stable wired connection if available, and test sustained upload at the intended output settings.
- Leave headroom for network variation instead of selecting a bitrate that merely matches a best-case speed test.
- Test representative movement and audio; a static or silent sample may not reveal issues that appear in the real program.
- Monitor both the local process and YouTube’s stream-health indication. Recovery settings do not replace monitoring.
- Decide in advance how to respond to power, computer, application, media-file, or network failures.
Copyright, reused content, and YouTube Live rules
Streaming a recording as a live feed does not remove the need to have rights to the video, music, and other material in it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for the specific material and channel before broadcasting. Repeated or minimally changed content may also raise reused-content questions for monetization; a 24/7 schedule or use of an encoder does not itself make content eligible. This article does not establish whether any particular channel or video will be approved.
For a continuous stream, plan the session length as well as the content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a single stream at or above 12 hours. If preserving the archive matters, use a tested session strategy and verify current behavior in YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.
Troubleshooting a continuous YouTube stream
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Ingest URL, stream key, destination configuration, or unsupported output settings. | Recheck the server URL and key in the chosen encoder, confirm the key is current, and compare output settings with YouTube’s encoder guide. |
| Stream health becomes unstable | Upload capacity, network variation, bitrate, or concurrent network use. | Test sustained upload, reduce output demands if needed, leave capacity headroom, and use Ethernet where practical. |
| Video or audio is missing or incorrect | Input selection, source or scene setup, encoder configuration, or media characteristics. | Test the same representative file and audio path before the long run; in Streamlabs, inspect scenes, sources, and audio controls, and in FFmpeg verify the selected input and output options. |
| FFmpeg stops or fails to resume | Process exit, host interruption, input failure, or output recovery behavior. | Inspect process logs and host/network status; verify the FIFO configuration matches the documented example and provide external monitoring or restart handling appropriate to the host. |
| Streamlabs stops after a computer or network issue | Desktop application and host availability, or connection loss. | Restore the host and connection, restart or reconnect the output as needed, then confirm YouTube stream health. The cited guide does not specify automatic recovery semantics equivalent to FFmpeg’s example. |
| A 24-hour broadcast has no expected archive | A single session reached or exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour automatic-archive scope. | Check YouTube’s current archive behavior and use a tested session strategy if the recording is important. |
