There is no universal FFmpeg switch that fixes YouTube live-stream disconnects from a Google Compute Engine VM. First confirm that FFmpeg is sending to the correct YouTube server URL and stream key. Then compare YouTube Live Control Room’s status and health information with FFmpeg’s first error at the time of a drop, and check the VM’s outbound network and resource behavior. The right fix depends on the protocol, FFmpeg build, logs, and what YouTube reports.
Start by identifying what is disconnecting
A YouTube health message describes what YouTube is receiving; an FFmpeg log describes what the sender is doing. Neither by itself proves why a particular stream stopped. Collect both sides of the event before changing flags or rebuilding the command.
- Record the setup. Note the FFmpeg version and build, the complete command with the stream key redacted, and the destination protocol shown in the output URL (for example, RTMP or RTMPS). Do not publish or share the key.
- Capture the failure. Save timestamped FFmpeg output and identify the first error at each interruption. Determine whether FFmpeg exits, remains running but stalls while writing, or reports a connection error.
- Check YouTube at the same time. In YouTube Live Control Room, note whether a preview appears and record the stream status and any health messages around the disconnect.
- Check the VM and its network. Compare the failure timestamps with outbound connectivity and available VM/network metrics. The available evidence does not establish a particular GCE region, machine type, firewall rule, or network setting as a general fix.
This sequence helps separate a destination/configuration problem from sender-side or network symptoms, without assuming which one caused the incident.
Verify the YouTube destination and credentials
YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Confirm that the values configured in FFmpeg match the current values shown there; an old, mistyped, or mismatched destination can prevent a valid ingest. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

The diverse ecosystem includes essential tools, compatible with WordPress, Ghost, Nextcloud (for private cloud storage), Joomla, and OpenClaw. Perfect for content management, e-commerce, private email, and business tools.
- INCLUDES FREE SSL & ENTERPRISE SECURITY: Get professional performance and safety without the extra costs. Seamlessly integrate your existing custom domain or utilize the included free subdomain. Your sites are automatically secured with free SSL certificates, built-in DDoS protection, and global CDN acceleration.
- TOTAL DATA PRIVACY & OWNERSHIP: Keep your digital assets secure on your own local hardware, not on third-party "big tech" servers. Designed for privacy-conscious individuals, creators, and small businesses seeking platform independence. Includes an intuitive web management portal for complete peace of mind.
Also check whether YouTube receives the stream preview and what its status or health information says. The YouTube Live Streams API documents stream status and a healthStatus object. These signals are useful evidence of what the platform sees, but they do not independently identify whether the VM, FFmpeg, credentials, or destination caused a disconnect.
Use reconnect options only when the output protocol supports them
FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and related options are HTTP protocol options. They are not generic reconnect controls for every FFmpeg output, and should not be added to an RTMP or RTMPS command as if they applied there.
Rank #2
For an HTTP-based destination, inspect the protocol options supported by the installed FFmpeg build and confirm their meaning for that version. FFmpeg documents options for reconnecting after disconnects, at EOF, on connection-time network errors, and for selected HTTP status codes, along with retry and delay limits. Its documentation also cautions that protocol use as an output can require special care. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Retrying is not automatically helpful: repeatedly retrying a permanent authorization or configuration error can obscure the underlying issue. Choose retry behavior only after the protocol and first error are known. The consulted documentation does not prescribe a universal RTMP-output reconnect flag for direct YouTube ingest.

Read the failure from both sides
If FFmpeg exits
Use the first error before the process exits, not just the final shutdown line. Compare its timestamp with YouTube’s status and health information. Confirm the destination and key, then investigate the VM’s outbound network and resource observations at that moment.
If FFmpeg stays running but the stream stalls
Compare FFmpeg’s timestamped output with whether YouTube still shows an incoming preview and with VM/network observations. A live process alone does not establish that media is reaching YouTube.
Rank #4
If YouTube reports a stream-health issue
Record the exact message and correlate it with FFmpeg’s first error. The platform’s health view can show what it detects, while the sender log can show what FFmpeg reports; treat them as complementary clues rather than a diagnosis on their own.

Direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube ingest and Google Cloud’s Live Stream API are different architectures. In the direct setup, FFmpeg on the GCE VM sends the stream to YouTube. With the managed API, FFmpeg sends an input to a Google Cloud channel, which transcodes and publishes outputs; the service’s input endpoints can use RTMP or SRT. That is a separate pipeline with its own channel configuration, not a setting that repairs a direct VM-to-YouTube connection. See the Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe managed architecture may be relevant if you need a managed media pipeline. The cited documentation does not establish a cost or reliability advantage over direct ingest; weigh the added channel and pipeline configuration against your actual requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings rather than run FFmpeg on a VM, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
