Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If VLC exits, an operating-system task supervisor can relaunch the command that started playback. That only fixes a process crash: it cannot make an expired YouTube URL valid, restore a broken network connection, or guarantee that playback resumes when VLC stays open but the video stalls.
A documented approach is to use Streamlink to resolve a supported YouTube stream and send it to VLC, then configure the operating system to restart that task after failure. The components are documented, but this exact combination is not a tested, guaranteed recovery recipe. First identify which part stopped.
Identify what “crash” means
| What you see | What needs to recover |
|---|---|
| VLC or the playback command closes | A process supervisor can relaunch the task. The source must still be available when it starts again. |
| VLC remains open, but the picture or sound stops | This is an in-process playback or source interruption. A supervisor that only watches for process exit may do nothing; reconnect behavior is not established here. |
| The YouTube source ends or is no longer available | You need a valid source, and possibly a new event URL. Relaunching VLC cannot restore an ended or inaccessible stream. |
Choose how VLC receives the YouTube stream
Direct URL playback
You can try opening a YouTube URL directly in VLC, but whether a given URL works can depend on the installed VLC version and changes to YouTube. The available evidence does not establish a current direct-playback recipe or guarantee that the URL will remain usable after a restart.
Streamlink feeding VLC
Streamlink documents YouTube among its supported services and can pass an extracted stream to an external player such as VLC. This separates stream resolution from playback. Compatibility may change, so check the current Streamlink documentation and installed version if YouTube extraction stops working.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For automatic recovery, treat the resolver and player launch as one task supervised by the operating system. If the task exits unsuccessfully, the supervisor can start it again. A successful relaunch still depends on Streamlink being able to resolve the source and VLC being able to play it.
Configure Windows Task Scheduler to retry a failed task
Microsoft Task Scheduler documents a RestartOnFailure setting. It requires both a restart count and an interval; the documented interval range is one minute to 31 days. The setting does not prescribe the exact action or arguments for every Streamlink and VLC installation, so verify those against the programs installed on your PC.

- Create one task for the complete playback launch. In Task Scheduler, create a task whose action starts your chosen playback command. If you use Streamlink, configure its documented external-player workflow to launch VLC. Keep the resolver and player in the same supervised task where your setup permits; otherwise a VLC-only task may not restart the resolver that failed.
- Set the failure-retry policy. Open the task’s Settings and enable the option to restart the task if it fails. Set both the restart interval and the maximum restart attempts. Choose a delay that avoids an immediate rapid retry cycle, and a finite attempt limit appropriate to how long you can leave the source unattended.
- Prevent duplicate playback instances. Set the task’s multiple-instance behavior so a retry does not start another copy while an earlier one is still running. The exact behavior depends on how the action and child processes are configured; confirm it by testing.
- Keep task history and application logs available. They help distinguish a task that exited from one that stayed active while playback stalled. Record the exit time and any resolver or player error before changing settings.
- Test a deliberate process exit. Start the task, close or terminate the supervised process once, and confirm that Task Scheduler makes the configured retry. Then confirm that only one playback instance is running and that the source actually resumes. A task marked as restarted does not prove that YouTube playback succeeded.
Microsoft’s setting is process-level retry, not a YouTube reconnection guarantee. Its documented interval must be at least one minute and no more than 31 days, and a retry count must be configured alongside it.
macOS and Linux: use the platform supervisor, but verify its syntax
Use the operating system’s service or task supervisor to monitor the complete resolver-and-player launch and restart it after an unexpected exit. The sources available here do not establish a verified, current copy-and-paste service definition for macOS or Linux. Check the official documentation for your operating-system version before choosing restart policies, commands, or service settings.

Whichever platform you use, test an intentional process exit, confirm that retries are limited as intended, and make sure the supervisor cannot spawn overlapping playback instances. If the process stays alive while media is stalled, process restart alone is not the relevant recovery mechanism.
Why VLC’s loop option is not crash recovery
VideoLAN’s VLM documentation describes loop as restarting a broadcast’s input list after the final input finishes. That is useful for repeating a list that reaches its end. It does not show that VLC will restart its own process after a crash or reconnect to an interrupted YouTube source.

Diagnose failures that a restart cannot fix
- The task restarts, but VLC cannot open the stream: the URL may have expired, the YouTube event may have ended, or the resolver may no longer support the page. Check the source and resolver before increasing retries.
- The task does not restart: check that the supervisor is watching the task that actually exits, that failure retries are enabled, and that both a retry count and interval are configured.
- Playback stops while VLC remains open: inspect player and resolver logs. A process-exit supervisor may consider the task healthy; the available documentation does not establish VLC’s behavior for this in-process interruption.
- Several VLC windows or processes appear: review the supervisor’s multiple-instance policy and whether the earlier player process is still running when a retry begins.
- Retries continue without restoring playback: the supervisor is repeating an attempt, not repairing an unavailable URL, network connection, or unsupported resolver behavior. Stop or limit retries while resolving the underlying failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel made from uploaded recordings rather than recovering a VLC session playing a YouTube URL, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
For a monthly option, $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not for restarting VLC or going live from a camera. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
