YouTube Studio vs OBS for a 24/7 Prerecorded Live Stream

YouTube Studio schedules and controls the broadcast; OBS loops and encodes the prerecorded feed. Here’s how to set them up and plan for long-stream limits.

Short answer: YouTube Studio and OBS do different jobs, so a typical do-it-yourself setup uses both. Schedule and control the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; use OBS as the local encoder to loop a prerecorded file or playlist and send it to YouTube. OBS can keep sending while it is running, but the cited documentation does not promise unattended uptime or automatic recovery.

What YouTube Studio does—and what OBS does

Decision YouTube Studio / Live Control Room OBS Studio
Main job Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast, manage metadata and stream options, and provide the stream URL and key. Encode and send the audio and video feed; provide media sources and local recording.
Prerecorded playback The cited Studio guidance explains scheduling and encoder setup, not looping a local file or playlist. Media Source can loop one file. VLC Video can play a playlist and loop it; VLC must be installed separately.
Going live Schedule or create the stream, configure the encoder, inspect its preview, and go live when appropriate. Load the media source, configure the YouTube destination and stream key, then start streaming. Studio remains the destination and control interface.
Continuity Scheduling a broadcast does not keep an encoder feed online by itself. OBS can send a configured loop while it is running; this is not a guarantee of unattended uptime or automatic recovery.
Archive YouTube’s automatic archive may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours, and DVR rewind on long streams may be limited or unavailable. OBS can record locally, which is useful as an archive backup.

For a 24/7 prerecorded broadcast, the practical DIY arrangement is Studio for scheduling and channel-side controls, plus OBS for the looping encoder feed. If your aim is simply to make a video available for viewing, consider whether an ordinary upload is a better fit than presenting it as a continuous live broadcast.

Before you set up a 24/7 stream

  • Check livestream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s livestreaming requirements and troubleshooting guidance.
  • Decide whether a YouTube archive is essential. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete on-platform VOD, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long broadcast. Keep a local recording if preserving the complete program matters. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limit.
  • Set expectations for rewind. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
  • Plan to monitor the feed. Preview the encoder signal and check audio and video after going live. YouTube also recommends checking a backup encoder and verifying local archive files in its livestreaming tips.
  • Keep the stream key private. It is the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it.

Set up YouTube Studio and OBS

  1. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and use the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. The exact interface can change; YouTube’s encoder livestream setup describes the workflow.
  2. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service if using its service preset, or enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; do not share or publish it.
  3. Add the prerecorded video. In OBS, add a Media Source for a single file and enable Loop. For a playlist, add VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed for this source. OBS documents these controls in Media Sources.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and that picture and sound are correct before you make the broadcast public or otherwise go live as scheduled.
  5. Monitor and preserve a backup. Check that playback continues, audio remains audible, and the preview has not frozen. If the full program matters, enable a local OBS recording and verify that the resulting files are usable. YouTube’s archive may not capture a stream over 12 hours, so do not treat it as your only copy.

What to know about monetization and reused material

Choosing Studio or OBS does not determine whether a channel or stream can earn money. YouTube says a monetized channel can trigger ads when monetization is enabled for the live stream; its live-stream guide discusses mid-roll ads. Check your channel’s current eligibility and the applicable YouTube monetization policies before relying on ad revenue. A 24/7 prerecorded loop is not, by itself, proof of monetization eligibility.

Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music, footage, narration, and any third-party clips. Repeating a video does not establish permission to broadcast it, and the platform’s copyright and monetization rules still apply.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • Live Control Room does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is streaming to the URL and key for the correct scheduled broadcast, and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced. Keep the key private while checking it.
  • The video stops after one play: For a single file, confirm that OBS Media Source’s Loop option is enabled. For a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; confirm VLC is installed.
  • The stream is live but picture or sound is wrong: Check the source in OBS and inspect the Live Control Room preview before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends monitoring the encoder stream; correct the source or audio routing and verify the preview again.
  • The broadcast disconnects or OBS stops: Studio scheduling does not keep the encoder alive. Check that OBS and the source remain running, then reconnect the encoder and verify the preview. The cited OBS and YouTube setup materials do not promise automatic recovery or unattended uptime.
  • The stream has no complete YouTube replay: A session longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local OBS recording; if a YouTube archive is required, plan to end and restart sessions before they exceed 12 hours.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough: YouTube may limit or disable DVR on streams longer than 12 hours. That is a platform behavior, not a setting in OBS that guarantees full rewind.
