XSplit Broadcaster vs. FFmpeg for Looping Videos on YouTube Live

XSplit suits creators who prefer scenes and visual setup; FFmpeg suits command-line users who want explicit loop control. Here’s how each connects to YouTube Live and what to consider for long streams.

Choose XSplit Broadcaster if you want a graphical, scene-based workflow; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring a command line and want explicit control over the loop option. Both can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live: XSplit documents a Media Slideshow with continuous playback options, while FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinitely looping an input. Neither option comes with a demonstrated guarantee of unattended 24/7 operation, and the available sources do not establish which is more reliable or uses fewer computer resources.

Which tool fits your workflow?

Need Better fit Why
Set up sources visually, manage scenes, or add overlays XSplit Broadcaster It uses a graphical interface built around scenes and sources.
Specify an indefinite file loop through a command FFmpeg Its documentation defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping.
Have the software guide you through YouTube output setup XSplit Broadcaster XSplit documents a YouTube output workflow that includes authorization and broadcast details.
Control input, encoding, format and destination options yourself FFmpeg Those choices are configured through command-line options.

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking. No controlled head-to-head measurements establish differences in reliability, CPU use, or 24/7 unattended operation.

Loop prerecorded video with XSplit Broadcaster

Build the playlist

  1. Open XSplit Broadcaster and add your video sources to a scene. XSplit’s source guide describes Media Slideshow as a way to create a playlist of multiple videos with continuous playback options.
  2. Configure the slideshow’s playback behavior in the version you have installed. The documentation supports continuous playback, but exact control names and locations may vary; verify them in your current build rather than relying on an assumed repeat-toggle path.
  3. Preview the scene and confirm the intended videos and playback behavior before starting the broadcast.

Connect to YouTube Live

  1. In XSplit, select its YouTube Live output and follow the documented setup flow. XSplit’s guide describes authorizing a YouTube ID, configuring output, and setting broadcast details.
  2. Complete any YouTube channel activation or eligibility steps required for your channel. YouTube access conditions can apply before a first stream.
  3. Start the broadcast from XSplit after checking the selected scene and YouTube broadcast details.

XSplit’s output integration abstracts some connection setup, but it does not remove YouTube’s requirements. If configuring an encoder manually, YouTube says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into it. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Loop a video with FFmpeg

Use the documented loop and pacing options

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means repeat indefinitely, while 0 means no looping. Put input options before the input they apply to. For a prerecorded file, -re reads at the file’s native frame rate and can help pace output when streaming live.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ... output

This is a syntax pattern, not a complete or tested YouTube command. The ellipses must be replaced with appropriate encoding, container, and destination settings for your media and stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the server URL and stream key, and avoid putting a secret key in a public script, screenshot, or log.

Keep the input type in mind

The example is for a prerecorded file. FFmpeg cautions against applying a low read rate to actual capture devices or live inputs because it can cause packet loss. Do not treat a camera or other real-time source as though it were a file to pace with -re.

Computer requirements and licensing context

XSplit’s product page lists the following vendor-published requirements. They are not independent workload tests, and XSplit’s live page should be checked for current details before relying on them.

XSplit-published item Listed requirement or note
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit minimum
Processor 2nd-generation Core i5 or equivalent minimum; 2nd-generation Core i7 or equivalent recommended
Memory 8 GB RAM
Graphics GeForce or Radeon class graphics supporting DirectX 10.1 or better
Available storage 250 MB
Upload speed 500 kbps minimum for its lowest streaming settings; 5 Mbps recommended for HD

XSplit says it supports NVIDIA NVENC. Its product page also says a Premium License enables simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms, including Facebook Live and YouTube Live; do not assume that capability is included with every license. These are vendor statements, not a comparison with FFmpeg.

What to expect from a long-running stream

A loop setting addresses playback repetition; it does not establish that a broadcast will remain uninterrupted. Both workflows depend on the computer running the encoder, a stable network connection, correct YouTube output settings, and the channel’s live-stream eligibility. The sources cited here do not demonstrate that either XSplit or FFmpeg can safely run unattended for 24 hours or guarantee recovery after YouTube disconnects.

  • Test the full playlist and output workflow before relying on it for a long broadcast.
  • Keep the computer powered and prevent sleep if you are using a local encoder.
  • Monitor the stream and retain access to the private stream key and broadcast controls.
  • Check current XSplit, FFmpeg, and YouTube documentation when setting version-specific options or resolving changes in interface labels.

Common problems and what to check

  • The video plays once and stops: In XSplit, inspect the Media Slideshow playback configuration and confirm continuous playback is enabled in your installed version. With FFmpeg, check that -stream_loop -1 appears before the relevant -i.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the YouTube Live server URL and private stream key are entered in the encoder, and that the channel is eligible to stream. Recheck the broadcast selected in XSplit if using its integrated output.
  • The FFmpeg command exits or rejects an option: Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the syntax and that input options are positioned before the input they apply to. The example above is deliberately incomplete and needs valid output settings.
  • A capture or live source loses packets: Do not use file-style low-rate pacing on a live input; FFmpeg specifically cautions that this can cause packet loss.
  • The stream stops during an extended run: Check the computer’s power and sleep settings, network stability, encoder status, and YouTube broadcast state. The cited material does not establish a tool-specific uptime guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or home connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video without requiring OBS or a computer to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode or split quality into tiers. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
