Streamlabs’ documentation does not promise that a YouTube live stream will continue if you switch apps or lock your phone. Its FAQ specifically says the app is effectively suspended during screen capture, and warns that iOS may kill the app during screen broadcasting. Keep Streamlabs open for an important broadcast, and test your exact phone, operating system, app version and streaming mode before relying on background operation.
What happens when Streamlabs is in the background?
Streamlabs Mobile can broadcast to YouTube using the phone’s camera, screen capture, or both. Its setup guide explains how to connect YouTube and start a broadcast from within the app, but does not say that a broadcast is guaranteed to continue after you leave the app or lock the phone. Streamlabs’ YouTube mobile setup guide was published April 16, 2021 and last updated August 12, 2026.
The clearest warning applies to screen capture. The Streamlabs Mobile Streaming FAQ says: “When screen capturing, the app is in the background and effectively suspended so it can’t render things inside of another app.” It also says iOS disables widgets during screen broadcasting to reduce the “very likely risk of the app being killed off by the system.” That describes app suspension and a risk of termination; it does not establish that YouTube stops receiving every stream in every setup.
Does it depend on camera, screen capture, or your phone?
It may. The official material gives a specific background-suspension warning for screen capture and identifies an app-kill risk on iOS during screen broadcasting. It does not provide a complete behavior matrix for camera streams, Android devices, iOS devices, app versions, or screen-lock behavior. So neither “it always keeps streaming” nor “it always stops” is supported.

- Screen capture: Streamlabs says the app is effectively suspended when in the background and warns about the risk of iOS killing it during screen broadcasting.
- Camera streaming: The setup guide supports camera streaming, but does not promise that a broadcast continues when the app is backgrounded or the phone is locked.
- Platform and lock state: The reviewed documentation does not establish universal behavior for Android, iOS, or a locked screen. Check your own combination rather than assuming one platform or mode will behave like another.
How to check whether your setup keeps the broadcast live
- Run a low-stakes test. Start a short test broadcast using the same camera or screen mode you intend to use. Avoid testing this for the first time during an important live event.
- Check the stream from another device. Confirm that YouTube is still receiving the broadcast after you switch apps or lock the phone, and watch for a disconnect or frozen picture. Do not rely only on the streaming app appearing active.
- Test the exact action you plan to take. Try switching apps and, separately, locking the screen. Results from one action do not establish what will happen with the other.
- Repeat after meaningful changes. If you change phones, operating-system or Streamlabs app versions, or switch between camera and screen capture, test again before relying on background operation.
- For a broadcast that cannot be interrupted, leave Streamlabs open. Keeping it in the foreground avoids depending on behavior the documentation does not guarantee.
Prepare the phone, but do not mistake preparation for a guarantee
Streamlabs recommends fully charging the phone, keeping a charger nearby, and closing open apps to reduce lag or crashes. These are sensible preparation steps, not a fix for operating-system suspension and not a promise that a backgrounded stream will stay live. A compatible USB-C power bank or other portable phone charger can extend a session if your phone supports it, but external power does not change how the operating system handles Streamlabs in the background.
