YouTube can play a playlist’s videos in sequence, and its Loop control can restart the playlist when it reaches the end. But looping does not guarantee uninterrupted playback indefinitely: YouTube may pause to ask whether you are still watching or stop Autoplay after inactivity. Playing with a phone screen off is a separate feature and, in YouTube’s mobile apps, requires Premium.
What “continuously” means on YouTube
Three different playback behaviors are easy to confuse:
- Playlist progression moves from one video in the playlist to the next.
- Playlist repeat starts the playlist again after its last video.
- Autoplay starts another related video after the current video ends; it is not the same as repeating a playlist.
These controls can keep videos playing in sequence, but they do not override YouTube’s inactivity stops or viewing prompts.
How to loop a playlist
On a computer
- Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
- Expand the playlist panel beside the video.
- Click Loop in the playlist controls. YouTube describes this as repeating the playlist. YouTube’s playlist playback guidance covers the control; the interface may vary.
In the YouTube mobile app
- Play the playlist.
- Open the playlist control box beneath the video and tap Loop.
- On Android, tapping Loop again changes the setting to repeat only the current video, rather than the whole playlist. YouTube’s Android instructions explain the control.
On a TV or game console
- Select and play the playlist.
- Open the playback controls and choose Repeat until the indicator shows that the playlist is repeating.
Control placement and labels can differ across devices, so check the playlist’s playback controls if these steps do not match your screen.

Why playback can still stop
“Continue watching?” prompts
With Autoplay on, YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” YouTube’s Help page gives these intervals before the prompt under the conditions it describes: 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, and 180 minutes on TV. Selecting Yes continues playback. These are YouTube-published product guidance figures, not a guarantee that every session will follow an identical schedule. See YouTube’s explanation of the prompt.
Autoplay can stop after inactivity
YouTube says Autoplay may stop automatically after inactivity: after 30 minutes when connected to a mobile network, or after four hours on Wi-Fi. These limits concern Autoplay, not the playlist Loop control. If playback has stopped, check the screen for a prompt and confirm that Autoplay is enabled. YouTube’s Autoplay help page describes its settings and inactivity behavior.

Does it keep playing with the phone screen off?
Not simply because the playlist is looping. Background playback is separate from playlist progression. YouTube’s mobile apps offer it to signed-in YouTube Premium members, subject to location, settings, and video eligibility. An ordinary playlist can advance or repeat while being watched in the app; background playback matters when you leave the app or turn off the screen. YouTube’s background playback guidance has the applicable conditions.
Playlist or queue: which should you use?
A saved playlist is the better choice when you want to return to a set of videos. YouTube says a queue in a computer browser does not save after the browser is closed; it recommends saving videos to Watch Later if you want to continue later. YouTube’s queue guidance explains this limitation.

Quick troubleshooting
- It plays the list once, then stops: turn on playlist Loop, rather than relying on Autoplay to choose another related video.
- It repeats one video: check whether Loop is set to repeat the current video; on Android, tap Loop again to change modes.
- A “Continue watching?” message appears: select Yes to resume.
- It stops after you close the app or lock the phone: that is a background-playback issue, not a playlist-loop setting. Check Premium eligibility and settings.
- Your list disappears after closing the browser: you were using the browser queue; save the videos in a playlist or Watch Later instead.
